Have you ever recommended the replacement of all the strings of a piano. I have a 40 yr old Kawai baby grand. No broken strings. According to piano technician some strings are starting to rust and must be replaced. Is this true or the piano tech just wants to scam me?
For medium sized ones, when the copper being pulled off is longer than the string, it can be held in a vice and the wire can be pulled of. It whirs along quite nicely. It doesn't work on the smaller ones as the copper wire breaks and it doesn't work on the bigger ones as the copper wire is too thick and intractable.
Welcome. It does make it very rapid when it works. I'm in the UK. I use a brand called Hexacore. Are these the same as yours? In act, are they yours? I get them from Fletcher and Newman in Kent.The core is hexagonal and this helps the winding to hold on. I carry 19 gauges and they are great or emergency use when the piano has to work tonight! I've even put the biggest on to replace a double would and it sounded fine.

Would adding a bead of solder at each end improve the tone of these types of strings I think It would help with the winding staying tight I'd add a small amount of solder to the point where the ends of the winding should be before doing any cutting that should keep the winding tight on th string when being unwound
I have removed some old strings from a customers piano and decided to buy some universal strings to replace them as I thought it would be a more economical solution (I normally order custom strings ) the piano is an old over damper. As I now have the new strings is it better to do all the measurements at home and remove winding before returning to refit the strings or is it still preferable to do this at the piano in the customers house ?
I find this interesting. You said each string has different sizes. The 5th octave (A key) of my upright grand piano just broke and I don't have the measuring tool. Could you please tell me the size for replacement? Thank you.
The stringing scale, or piano wire sizes used on different model pianos varies with each model and size of piano. You would need to know the stringing scale for your particular piano or have a tool to measure the string.
Will you have to take off an additional 1/4 inch from each side of the new string to allow for stretching after lining up and scoring off the coils evenly with the old string? Or will you leave the new string even like in the video on both sides since the old string is off the piano and not under tension? Thank you
I've done this on an old string as an experiment before ordering a new one, but I am getting a buzz. Would a few twists in the direction of the winding cure this? Best
For replacing all of the strings, you would need to send in your bass strings to be duplicated and for the treble strings you would need to measure them all to determine which sizes your piano uses and then purchase a one pound coil for each of the different sizes of treble wire that you need.
