Thank you Docs for providing such important information with such great energy and understanding. I am a very active 57 nurse and very stressed about my upcoming posterior hip replacement next week. I choice this approach because I felt it was the safest in my mind because I am very petite and worried about a fracture even thought the anterior approach would fit better with my active life style. It is so depressing being less active and in such pain and waiting.... and I keep changing my mind about my decision! Plus I will have to the my other hip soon after.....talk about stress! Anyway, I keep watching your videos and feel much better....especially about the posterior vs anterior choices of people and surgeons. Thank you for being the type of doctors we all wish we had in our area.

All the Docs podcasts have helped me to.prepare for my surgery. After listening to them I have had fewer bad dreams of being treated bad atbthebhospital. When Inget scared or anxious Inhave nightmares of beingbtreated bad which neverbhapoens but mybfear is going 90 MPH all the time. The docs explanations have helped me so much.

Thank you, Docs, for the really helpful tips on preparing for surgery. The more preparation, the less stressful it will be. If you're going home from surgery, in advance get a few extra pillows to elevate your leg or to keep your legs separate and aligned. Since you'll be spending time in bed and won't be immediately mobile, get bottles of water, kleenex, cardigan sweater to keep your shoulders warm, wipes for your face and hands, and a small flashlight so you can easily find things in the dark. These helped me a lot and cut down on the times I had to ask my helper to get something for me. My smartphone and laptop kept me company. My surgery was successful with no complications, recovery went well, but I kept at that physio! Good luck!
I'm a pole vaulter and PV coach who is in line for a hip replacement. At 73 years old, I can run well, and I fully intend to keep vaulting after my surgery-or not.
Thank you Doctors. I had my surgery on February 1. I have pain meds for pain. So far everything is ok. I just didn’t realize the pain would be for 3 to 4 weeks.
I saw the model of hip joint that you guys showed in one of your videos & I can't stop thinking of another version of it that will provide greater rom & reduce dislocation, in other words a model for younger & motivated candidates. I am suggesting that the metal part that rests into the femur where the ball is attached should be presented by a smaller ball that rotates within a greater ball the latter rotates into the metal socket. This will allow the femur to rotate in a greater arc & if it's greater than e.g. 45 degrees, the bigger ball that rests in the socket will rotate a whole femur, like it will take over. Is there any improved model in the market ? Or is every hip joint model the same for all candidates regardless of age ? Keep up your good work.

Thank you for this video I was struggling to remember the steps before the surgery as my last replacement was 5 years ago, I'm currently waiting to go to the pre-admission clinic for tests so while I'm waiting I'm going on the patches and following your other exercise video for the time being, you have a new sub because honestly I'd be clueless without this and worrying again, to anyone reading this having their hips done follow what your doctor says! I didn't even quite smoking when I was told and ended up having complications during surgery dont be like me as it's not worth the risk try to be as healthy as you can before surgery 💕

The surgery went well, I am on my 11th day post operation and I feel good, not great yet, I have had a good recovery so far as far as any side effects with the meds, I understand is different for everybody, I do the leg exercises suggested by the doctor and try to walk with the walker about 3 times a day for about 5 minutes at the time. Hi Kat59. Thanks for your kind words. The top reasons a hip replacement would fail are polyethylene wear, loosening and fracture. Thankfully the first two happen very slowly. The third one happens quickly. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Hi Kat59. Usually it would be related to high impact activity or excess weight. Spine issues would not typically cause your hip replacement to fail. Hope that helps.
I am 5 weeks post op from a total hip replacement. I wasn’t able to do “pre-hab” because I had broken my hip due to avascular necrosis. Two days after surgery I developed severe sepsis and acute renal failure. I didn’t even feel bad. I just noticed in my Foley that I had only produced 100 ml of urine over the course of 2 days. We are unsure if the anesthesiologist gave me a stress dose of hormones for adrenal insufficiency. (That might be a good video to do with the anesthesiologist.) I went to the ED as a precaution. I’m glad I did. I ended up in the ICU.

I need to have my right hip replaced soon. I've been watching all of your videos. Two questions. My ortho surgeon does this surgery at a surgical center. This is concerning to me. Should I be concerned? Also, since they use a surgery center, they send you home the same day. I'm on Eliquis, which I'll have to discontinue three days prior, and I would feel more comfortable staying in the hospital at least 1 night. Am I being reasonable?
It's very common to go home same day now. They will likely restart your Eliquis first night. We encourage our patients to go home same day. You've got this!
I had a TLKR done last year and 13 months later rheumatoid arthritis is causing a lot of pain, does knee replacement make you more prone to arthritis attacking the joint?

Hi guys! I'm a new subscriber and really enjoy your videos. My question has to do with leg weakness. Three back surgeries have left me with no pain 😉 but permanent leg weakness 😒. It seems to have gotten progessively worse about the time that my hip arthritis started to act up. Will my upcoming July 15 hip replacement surgery ultimately add to, or lessen my leg weakness? Hi Larry, so if our calculations are correct your surgery is tomorrow - good luck! With respect to leg weakness, that is more likely related to your back and some of the pressure that is put on the spinal cord itself or the nerves that leave the bottom of the spinal cord. Some patients do have pain related weakness that could be improved with your hip replacement but the primary goal of your procedure would typically be pain relief. Hi Jay K. We do not routinely do bilateral total hip replacements simultaneously however this is done by some surgeons. It is always best to discuss risks and benefits of surgery with your treating surgeon. There are some associated risks with increasing age so other surgeons will decide to do staged procedures. Hi Docs Although my hip replacement went well I have 11 layers of stitches due to having hardly any muscles. I have been in agony. I’m a week in and finally it’s almost manageable (the pain). Will it get better? I am on a lot of medication including liquid morphine. (Only at night) . Arrrrrgh! It’s tough 😰 x 🇬🇧💖
Is it true that the 'new school' thinking is patients don't have to go off hormone replacement therapy before surgery? I don't want to go through menopause during and after recovery. I'll have to add 'banshee' to my mental health disorder list - not kidding...
Having left hip replacement in two weeks. I am a former scrub nurse. I am completely freaked out to have found out today they will do a Spinal with Propofol drip. WHAT IS THIS FASCINATION. With not doing general anesthesia ??? I think this is pretty major surgery. I fear I will hear the Stryker saw start up and .i will sit bolt upright screaming. In your opinion is it done under spinal typically ? Is it because DVT risk ? Getting up sooner ? I am in the southeastern part if the USA.
Hi Mary. It is normal to be somewhat apprehensive about having surgery - especially being in healthcare! Traditionally spinal anesthesia is used in the vast majority of cases for numerous reasons - the main one is probably early post op pain control but there are many other benefits such as reducing the risk of post operative confusion in older patients. DVT risk is likely the same between anesthetics. Often patients will have less nausea without a full general anesthetic. It certainly is the gold standard. Good luck!
Hi Kat59. So that is not entirely true. The main goal of hip replacement is pain relief however you may improve your range of motion. Having said that, sometimes the stiffness that has settled in over the decades leading up to your surgery often remains. Every patient is a little different. Usually there would be some improvement in your range of motion though. Good luck!
I'm getting the last of six teeth by the oral surgeon total cost almost 2,000. I have plaque that needs to be removed does it have to be done before my hip surgery? Because this is more cost to take away from money I need while being off work after surgery.
Hi El. That should be left up to your oral surgeon however many patients have cleaning done after surgery depending on their regular schedule. Thanks for watching.
Question about pain right side of lumbar area - bad hip is on the right. It's more aggravating than my hip pain, especially when sitting for my job at the computer. I think I got it after after sitting in a twisted position to fix my sofa spring again. With THR in early December should I use ice or heat to it?
Hi El. It could be the hip but sounds more like lower back. Both ice or heat could be successful. Often patients will use a combination of heat first followed by ice. It is something you can experiment with. Good luck and also with your THR in December. Keep us posted.
My name is Amber Cooper and I have a sister with bilateral hip dysplasia since she was one years old. She has had about 9+ surgeries on each hip and none of them helped her. Because of the dysplasia, she also suffers from osteoarthritis and the beginnings of osteoporosis. From all the surgeries she has had at a very young age, and because all of her surgeries ended up failing with complications like necrosis and more pain, she has a lot of PTSD and is afraid of more surgeries. Our family has tried every alternative method to alleviate her pain, from stem cell work to corticosteroids and nothing has helped. I've started researching a simultaneous bilateral hip surgery, in order to possibly minimize the number of surgeries and hopefully get her pain free faster. Her fear of doctors and surgeries makes it to where she doesn't want to think about it, but I honestly think it's the best option for her at this point. Furthermore, some doctors have said she's too young for a surgery (she's 22), but I have researched and found kids as young as 18 that have the same surgeries. If you could give me any advice on how to bring up this issue, more about how it works, and where would it be best for her to go for a potential surgery, I would greatly appreciate it. I would also like to know if the scar tissue from all of her previous surgeries will impact a replacement or not. She has been in extreme chronic pain for all of her life, and on top of that some doctors have told her she was faking her condition, so her distrust is salient. She has given up hope of ever not being in pain, and I would really like to give her some hope that she can have a future and she doesn't have to give up on her dreams because of her pain. If you could help in any way, you would be giving someone a life that she never thought was possible. Thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing back from you both.

My surgery is March 3rd at 12:30 p.m. how bad can a patient be beforehand and yet still be able to go home after say two nights without having to go to inpatient rehab?if I haven't been able to walk without a walker for 8 months or so, is it still possible for me to come home after two nights? Even though I've arranged a cat sitter to come in and feed the kitties, I do not want to be away from them more than two nights.
What exercises can I do with bone on bone to help beforehand? I do stretches and get up and down from office chair a lot. I don't feel I'm weak in legs, just tight.

I feel my legs are strong because I can get up very quickly from a chair. My problem is tightness so I'll just work on the stretches that I can. I'm going to look for that video.
