a Canadian Beekeeper's Blog
"2019 Fall Rewind" is a video edit of all my videos from when I pulled off the last of my honey boxes at the end of August to when I sorted the last of my honey bee hives into the winter shed in Mid November. The fall of 2019 was one of the most challenging years for our farm, here I provide a glimpse from the honey farm. A hot dry summer lead into 6 inches of rain throughout September which followed by over a foot of wet snow at the beginning of October. This weather not only shortened our opportunity to properly feed the bee hives up for winter but it also caused us terrible grief as we battled the mud and then frost as we tried to pick the hives up to move them in for winter. It was a fall that we never forget!

Fantastic my friend! Had some minor surgery need to keep still for a few days my wife said why don’t you watch that Canadian keeping guy from the start to the end. I said I’m all caught up and 💥 BAM💥 perfect timing thank you for the awesome information again! Heading to the bee convention hint my question will be about nucs and Ezyloader’s. Missed my annual deer hunt in Canada and now my favorite bee guy!!! DAMN COVID

Each time I watch/listen to this, I chuckle every time when you find out Michael is 14, not 15 🤣. Michael is a very respectful, responsible young man. I caught it when he answered “no sir” to you asking him a question in the truck. I sure wish my husband and 13 year old son had that kind of relationship. You and Sandy should be very proud, as I’m sure you are.

Hello Canadian beekeeper, question for you. When heading into winter, and during winter, is the bottom entrance the only entrance you should have open? Also, during winter, when the bees and queen are balled up feeding on frames of honey, will or can they more side to side to the next frames? Thank you so much.
@ABC-qr9lv
@ABC-qr9lv 3 года назад
Your hives are damp, that's why your bees need this strange treatment. The walls of your hives are just too thin, you need to insulate them. Keep them dry and you'll notice the difference. Greetings!
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog 3 года назад
No, they are damp because of the amount of rain we received that fall. They dried out nicely and wintered very well inside
@ABC-qr9lv
@ABC-qr9lv 3 года назад
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog I understand but when you keep them dry and warmer you'll have a chance to stop using chemicals ' cause the natural varroa killers will come to your beehives. And it also means less food for the winter time. Chemicals kill both - the bad and the good, so the balance is lost. Try it with your few hives as a test. Watch this video about book scorpions, it's really great: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y1zdancXRDg.html

Hard for you, your strategy is successful and few people follow it, but I have an important observation that the insulation for the hive cover is not tight or thick, allowing moisture to condense on the bees, and this is harmful to the bees, and it is possible for heat to come out from the bottom of the hive, and the water does not condense on the frames inside the hive, and it is required that the hive be open from The bottom is wire, not or without as long as the shop is dark in distraction

Hello Ian, I am a new beekeeper. I am wondering on how you reduce the beehive (4 boxes of bees into one). In this video (min 6), do you just remove all three boxes (everything that is above queen excluder), feed them right away and that is it? Or there is some slow process to reduce it? I am afraid that they might swarm if I remove boxes while there is still warm outside? Thank you.
