Let me show you how I prepare my sweet potato slips for planting in the garden. I love growing sweet potato slips and have been doing it for many years now. It's simple and fun and you won't believe how much food you can grow yourself by starting slips from a single potato.
This started years ago with a purple sweet potato that I found at the farmer's market. Since then, every year, I save a few of my potatoes and start my own slips in March. In this video, I show you how I prepare the sweet potato slips for planting in the garden.

My orange sweet potato leaves got oedema somehow this year, I thought initially the plant had been infested with insect eggs. Thankfully moving it outside to get direct sunlight helped clear it up in case anyone else is running into this issue

Yes! Direct sun and good airflow. My slips started taking off this year as soon as it got warmer and I was able to move them outdoors too. I'm glad you were able to clear this out!

I was unable to find any purple sweet potatoes in time this year but the orange ones are producing lots of slips for me.

That's funny, I have a purple one that is producing SO many slips, but my orange one that has slips but they're so tiny and much less happy looking

That's awesome! You have a bit of a shorter growing season then we do. When do you harvest?

That is how I originally started growing purple sweet potatoes! I was trying to sprout an orange one and it wouldn't do a thing. Then I remembered that I had a couple of purple ones in the pantry that I found at the market weeks before and never ate. Back then, I put them in water and BOOM! I had so many slips so so fast! Since then, I've never went back to the orange ones.
