SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #119 : Bottom Preparations
On this episode we get into the fun and brutal task of sanding the bottom. We had wanted to water blast the bottom down to gel coat or fiberglass but that is something that has to be done by the yard for environmental reasons and we had no were near the budget for such a task so we chipped off all the loose bits and sanded the entire bottom.
I also show you how I went about filling the old knot meter hole on the boat with G10 fiberglass board. If you don't know about G10 you should look into it, this stuff is magic!
After a long hard day of sanding a tipsy Camille decided to document our shower experience. :)

I must have busted up laughing at least a dozen times over Camille's funny faces photobombing the hard-working skipper, James. Just the way she gradually introduces her mug into the scenes and then proceeds to roll her eyes or display a comical expression. Priceless! I loved watching you guys work. Surprisingly, at the end of the video, I wasn't either sore or tired. But I did have hankering to watch the uncensored version. ~wink~

Your plug of the old speed/log looks very good. Using G-10 was a smart idea. I will keep that in mind. People occasionally call me in to remove old transducers like that but I always beg off on doing the glass work. This technique has a lot to recommend it.
@SailorJames

Yeah it really sped up the process and gave me a lot of volume with out fighting layups vs. gravity. I was stoked on how it turned out and it was the smoothest part of the bottom hahaha

Really like the way you focus on the needed and go back cruising. Get out there. Advice I am taking to hart!
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
yeah its easy to get bogged down with all the stuff you would "like" to do to your boat and never end up cruising. This apocalypse we are in has given me a chance to do a bunch of small projects that don't cost me any money that I might have not done because they were "essential".

Years ago I brokered an old 35 Alberg (1965?)in Lauderdale. The buyer put the boat on the hard at Riverbend to do a lot of cosmetic work. There were no blisters at time of survey and haulout, but after two weeks blisters started to appear below the waterline. They grew in diameter and depth over a period of weeks. Never saw anything quite like it before or since. Some near the base of the keel were several inches in diameter and almost two inches deep. Lots of fiberglass in those old boats.
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 года назад
whoa! I wonder if they had blasted the boat shortly after it came out and took it down to glass if the blisters would have still happened? maybe if it could have dried out with not sealing barrier the water ingress would have found its way out without causing damage? crazy and good to know! thanks for telling me!

@@SailorJames I read an article by Donald Street decades ago where he described a similar event in a boat in the VI. I am not a laminates expert and do not understand fully what happened with the Alberg. I spent a lot of time in the yard while this was happening and the owner and I checked it on a regular basis. It finally stopped and he had the yard clean out and fill the blisters. It is a cautionary tale of what can happen in warm salt water. On another note, I did a thorough rehab on a 50' Prowler catamaran in Costa Rica from 2014-2017. At one point I had the boat out of the water for a month. When we launched her she floated 14" higher in the bow and 4" higher in the stern than before haulout. This was in spite of the fact I had done extensive rewiring and replumbing using upgraded (i.e. heavier) materials than the manufacturer. It was so dramatic that at next haulout we lowered the boot stripe a foot. There is a heck of a lot to be said for having a boat thoroughly dried out every few years, regardless of age or construction.

That's the first thing I did when buying a 20 years old nice litlle cruiser; strip the gelcoat entirely, and resin with epoxy the whole thing. Had to pay someone for that but never regreted it.

Hey James. New subscriber here. I’m looking to buy an Alberg 30 but with the apocalypse and all I’m having trouble getting access to the boat and the broker is a tool box.im just wondering what the length of the setties are on your boat pre stove mod any info would be great. Also Camilla there is nothing better after a hard days work than a shower beer. Love your guys channel and your boat. All the best to both of you.

The settees on an Alberg 30 are 72” by 27” before any mods.... at least that is what mine are. Get the boat! They are awesome!

I talk about my reasons at the beginning of part 2 : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I4VnUFcxA-4.html basically it boils down to VHBY being a far more superior boat yard.

@@SailorJames not to mention eddies was going to charge me per diem 4 times as much as ventura! and eddies one way haul out is the same as both ways at ventura and ventura actually blocks the boats instead of cradles.
