This video demonstrates the simple process to prepare the ubiquitous Gotek floppy emulator for the Atari ST range of computers. This will also work for the Commodore Amiga though with a slight jumper change.
The parts, tools and software required are:
1. Gotek Floppy Drive, preferably with the LED display
2. Soldering iron
3. Header pins - 4
4. USB to serial adaptor
5. STM32 firmware flashing utility
6. Flash Floppy firmware: github.com/kei...
7. USB flash drive, 8GB or more recommended
8. HxC file manager and configuration file:
hxc2001.com/dow...
Optional parts include:
1. 0.91"128x32 OLED display
2. Piezo buzzer
3. Rotary encoder
4. Socket-to-socket jumper leads
5. Dremel, or similar tool, for modifying the case

Good video clear instructions on how to do the conversion. Will this just read .ST files or is there a way of reading .MSA files too?
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
Ant2110 this is using the Flash Floppy firmware, which as of version 0.15, doesn’t support MSA images. You can use the HxC conversion utility to convert MSA to HFE format but that defeats the purpose of one of the benefits of MSA ie smaller size format.

Thanks for this video ! Thanks to this I bought a Gotek and successfully flashed it using an old PC I had to dig out from my attic but at least it worked :) Also successfully installed the OLED display, regretfully at my age, it's impossible to read the tiny letters on the screen without reading glasses..... :D Still having some issues though...when I boot I get a message that the firmware is outdated so looking for a more recent one now....but at least all the hardware works.

Hello, can I load into Atari some program (e.g. Steinberg PRO 24, that I own) from original FDD (Epson 480L in my case), then connect Gotek floppy emulator in place of FDD and save PRO 24 into Gotek? I'd like to use Gotek instead of FDD, but have this sequencer PRO 24 only on original DD floppy disk. Don't know how to transfer sequencer from floppy disk to Gotek. Many thanks for your help.

Well that was easy... Funnily enough I waited about 6 weeks for the eBay gotek to arrive and yesterday I decided to get one from amigastore because I thought it was lost or something, well of course it arrived the day after I ordered the expensive preconfigured one from amigastore... Oh well, the good thing is the one I got for the Amiga is one that has a custom plate for fitting inside the Amiga and I can use my cheap one purely for the ST without swapping around jumpers all the time, good to have multiple goteks anyway in the long run. Very simple and easy tutorial to follow, only thing that stumbled me for a bit was the pinout for the TX and RX for the Gotek but that was one google search away and it would've been easy to swap the 2 around if they were backwards

So basically you just need to connect the floppy connector upside down? I thought you had to rearrange the cables.
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
Looking at the front of the drive, Pin 1 is on the right hand side. On the ST, STE and Mega ST, Pin 34 is on the right hand so the twist is needed to have Pin 1 on the drive and connector aligned (line 1 on the cable is generally shown as a red wire). For the Falcon, no twist is required as Atari placed Pin 1 on the right hand side, unlike the other models

Great video! Quick question if you have a moment. I'm on FlashFloppy 0.10 and have a 520STfm. I believe it's TOS 1.0, no version info is visible under info. No rainbow logo. Anyway, I have the jumpers set correctly. No matter how I flip the ribbon cable, I can't cycle through "floppies" with the GoTek buttons and I can't format the "floppies" from the desktop format utility. It tells me that the disk is physically write-protected. Any thoughts? Thank you beforehand for your time!
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
Geek Therapy Radio Podcast are you using the AUTOBOOT.HFE file manager? How did you create your disk images you’re using for writing?

Just to add, if its a 520stfm, then you probably have TOS 1.2.

My Falcon 030 seemed to kill two different GoTec LCD readouts - but the GoTec functions correctly otherwise - just can't see which slot is selected... Anyone else seen similar results or know of any reason this would happen or if it could be reset somehow?

Hi great video quick question how did you get your Atari disks onto pc ? Aren't the formats different ? ..cheers steve
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866 4 года назад
2000stephenellis the Atari TOS formatted disks have a variation of the FAT12 file system which can be read by PCs. If they are in this format, you can read these on your PC. There are also programs that run under Windows that can convert to the ST disk image format which can then be put in your Gotek’s USB stick. www.8bitchip.info/atari/floimgd.php

Do I understand that correctly you actually no need for rotating encoder as well as LED display since you have an onscreen browser (unlike Acorn or amiga)?
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866 3 года назад
The rotating encoder and OLED display are really optional extras for the Gotek, as you have the standard two buttons on the unit and numerical LED display that serve the purpose of being about to change disks and display the current active allocated disk "slot". The onscreen browser is for allocating the disk image files on the USB drive to the disk slots on Gotek. The Amiga does have the same HxC browser available to do this too (it's available here: hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/SDCard_HxC_Floppy_Emulator_Manager.zip)

This floppy virtual drive cant read 800kb images. Too bad for games

The firmware is able to read 80 track / 10 sector formatted disks. Have you tried the latest firmware?

What model is this? Trying to order one and found 2 models, namely SFR1M44-U100K and SFRM720FU. Thanks.
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
This is the SFR1M44-U100K. It's the most common and cheapest from what I've seen. The model number, the "U100K" indicates it's a 3 digit LED display. The "1M44" part of the model number suggests this contains 1.44MB firmware, but this won't matter if you are flashing your own - the underlying hardware is the same.

I am using exactly the same devices and USB>Serial that you did in the video. When I run ST Flashloader Demo I keep getting 'unrecognized device .. please reset your device and try again' or ' No response from target bootloader cannot started please verify bootmode configuration and the flash protection status.. rest your device and try again'
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
Ant2110 I’ve seen this before. Check the soldering around the header pins you’ve put in, making sure there’s no solder whiskers and that the pins and vias are surrounded by even solder
@ANTandTEC
@ANTandTEC 5 лет назад
@@modernisingyourretrocomput3866 Thank for the reply. Yes the soldering is good, have tried few time and just the same, any other suggestions? www.powerlineit.com/temp/1.jpg www.powerlineit.com/temp/2.jpg
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
Soldering work looks better than mine! These two things may be obvious, but check the jumper is bridging the header pins, the contacts inside the leads haven’t been pushed in and are making good contact and lastly ensure the right COM: port is selected in STM32 software.

Great video. Since I am thinking of using this with my MSTE, does it support plain files? Not in disk images that is.
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
CFalcon030 all data, including plain files, must be inside disk image files for the Gotek to read them unfortunately
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
I believe he is suggesting the Atari directly accessing the FAT32 file system on the USB stick. Extensions such as HxCMount will allow you to do this but it will require the HxC firmware or later versions of the FlashFloppy firmware. The Gotek (unflashed) will work with the Atari with the native firmware, but by updating to Flash Floppy, you are able to use the ubiquitous .ST format as well as the .HFE format that allows for other formats such as 800Kb extended formats. The standard Gotek firmware and utility will partition a USB stick but since Windows will only mount the first one on USB sticks, the convenience is lost.

It's a shame it doesn't support STX and MSA formats....
@modernisingyourretrocomput3866
There was some discussions on the FF forums around July 2018 about supporting other formats. MSA was raised again and Keir (the FF developer) didn't seem opposed to it so hopefully it will be supported in a later revision.

If you looked at the flashfloppy github page you'd find that you can use a mac to flash the firmware. You'd just need to use the command line...
