I began spinning with no equipment other than a drop spindle. This method doesn't create a super smooth prep, but if you're just beginning as a spinner, this is a great way to explore. Have fun!

When I started spinning 18 years ago, I didn't have equipment either and got a fleece. I got a dog comb from a dollar store and cannibalized a leather mini skirt from a second hand store to make a lap cloth and flicked and combed the whole fleece to spin and this became my first shawl. I teach spinning classes at my local yarn store and still keep several dog combs, leather lap clothes, and home made spindles(dowels and drawer pulls) to show students that you can efficiently process larger amounts of fleece without spending a lot of money.

Thank you. You are most welcome. I want to do more fiber videos. What kind of things would you or others find helpful?

Your video is really useful and also encouraging, it’s so easy to be put off when you don’t have equipment, I only have a homemade drop spindle and you are so informative and helpful thanks

Awe, thanks. I started out with just a drop spindle, too.

Got my last three Jacob fleece for free. Other wise they would have been tossed. Small fleece but still good quality. A lot of VM but I work my fiber enough to knock nearly every bit out. Nice technique.

Way to go. I'm a big fan of Jacob sheep. They're all so different. And thank you.

I've been researching commercial spinning, and when they prepare roving for a ring spinning frame, they do the same thing- drafting out the sliver, combining it, re-drafting it, combining it...

I learned that AFTER I started doing this. It makes sense, and maybe this method is where the machinery technology was born? One of the things I love about fiber is the commonality of technique that spans location, cultures, and time. I am quite certain people were doing this millennium before I figured it out. It's all so connected and living and humbling.

Very interesting channel. Looking forward to learning from you. I’m getting ready to buy a homestead and plan to grow as much of my food as I can, but also want to finally start using my spinning wheel and making my clothes too. I’m not much of a knitter, although I haven’t really worked at it to get good, but I’ve got the knack for crochet so I know I’ll be able to use my yarn. I think I want to build a loom to try some basic weaving too. One day.

Good for you. Just remember to start small and grow. Burnout is a real challenge, especially when you're by yourself. Chickens and gardens are the best option to start. I knit because it's portable and reaches finished goods faster. However, weaving is definitely more enjoyable to me. There are lots of great creators and I'm always learning myself. Keep your eyes on the prize, and all the best. I hope to watch your journey as well 🥰

@@kindfibers thank you. Yes I’ll add new things slowly. I have severe chronic fatigue syndrome so I need to be very careful. I already have chickens here so I’ll be taking them with me. As soon as one of them goes broody I’ll get some fertile eggs to put under her to start growing the flock. They’re getting quite old so I need some younger ones. I’m going to have raised garden beds. I had those at my last house and was able to grow 95% of my vegetables so I’ll do that again, but the first year as I settle in and observe the property I’ll just grow in containers so I can move things around and work out where the permanent garden needs to be. I have a whole list of animals I want and have them pretty much prioritised in my head. Sheep will be a high priority as they will do a lot of the mowing for me. I’ll hire someone to come and shear them. I don’t need to use the fleeces straight away. It doesn’t matter if they sit there for a year before I get to them. I’m not putting pressure on myself with that. I have a huge amount of fabric in my stash as it is so if I need to make something I can use that first rather than make fabric. Animals that are on the list that are just for food, meat and dairy, that will take a lot of work without saving me a lot of work, will wait until I’ve been there a good few months and the flare in my symptoms that moving will cause is well over. I want to play with felting too. That seems to be very fast. Not for all things. I don’t fancy wearing a felted jacket, but I will happily wear a felted hat or slippers 😊

Thanks for that wonderful tutorial. I am preparing an alpaca fleece for spinning but don't have combs to create a roving so this will suit me down to the ground. Sooooo happy I found you on Yu tube.

Thank you. Alpaca should be lovely done this way. I'm hoping to get a few more videos done this year once we get past the busy season here on the farm.
