David your wife is fun, intelligent, pretty and wholesome. And she honors god with her being. You'rea lucky man. I thank God for people like you two. Thumbs up!!!
Its so funny that as a kid I hated eating traditional Caribbean food. All those root vegetables or "ground provisions " as we called them weren't cool. I wanted western food. Now everyone is realizing the nutritional value of these foods. And I find myself eating in new reimagined dishes. Love the mom rap at the end.
That kaleidoscope mom rap thing-a-ma-jig doohickey whatsit at the end was the cherry on top of it all! Love your videos as they're helping me s lot! Thank you ❤
Is realy a good break fast dish in Kerala/india. Just boil and eat wish side dish of only chilly+salt+coconut oil. Is a very good item. In olden days and now in villages it is a very attractive breakfast item. In malayalam is called "KAACHIL"
I loved this! About time Rachel got in front of the camera more. I've got to figure out how to grow yams successfully here in SE TX. We're prone to hurricanes too and the one time I tried, they got flooded. Need to go back over Dave's tapes and planting instructions...A, B, C. I have no idea what I'm doing... Thanks Rachel! At least I know how to cook them now!
I discovered oxalic acid at a Phish concert...wait...I mean when I was trimming fishtail palms, the seed clusters will tear you up! And after you wash it off it gets WORSE before it gets better. Be careful with a chainsaw, flings it all over....hand trimmimg is better. OA is also used to remove gold from circuit boards in a much higher concentration.
@davidthegood Have you had any success growing grocery store-bought yams? I bought some with what look like “eyes” starting and put them in a sunny window. But I was wondering if I should suspend in water like people do with sweet potatoes. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
"the onset of maturity in yam is not well understood and the date of harvest often bears no relationship to the functions and activities of the tuber and as a result farmers aren't able to accurately determine the best time to harvest the crop. The accumulation of starch in the tuber reaches its peak when accumulation of starch in the leaves make them turn yellow. The starch content of leaves was the determining factor for when the tuber had reached maturity. The yam tuber is fully matured when minimum starch content was obtained in the leaves. These low levels of starch content were marked by the yellowing of the lower leaves of the plant so this provided a clear indication of the earliest possible time to harvest the yam."
Wonderful video. I have quite a few islanders as neighbors who've grown and eaten yams their whole lives. They cook them a bit differently just cutting the yam into pieces (not skinning them) and then boil them. The skin pretty much falls off after a fair bit of boiling. You pull them out when that happens they put them in a new pot of water and boil the till ready for mash. For eating like you would a whole potato they just boil away and serve them with the skin. Nobody eats the skin of course. I think I'll try cooking them your way cause you never can get your hands itchy enough. I reckon if I broke out in a rash your evil husband would have some kind of happy evil laugh about that. All joking aside it will be interesting to see if they taste different using your method. The Cook Islanders also have an interesting way of growing yams and taro that makes them all grow the same size. They get a big hard heavy stick with a wide base and pound a hole in the ground and plant the yam or taro in there They use a stick with a bigger base for yams. Apart from getting regular sized yam and taro tubers which would make cooking easier it might help water run and stay in the holes the yam and taro are planted in. Makes a lot of sense with taro which loves water.
Thanks for sharing! You guys should try cooking it the way that I had it at an African restaurant the other day. Ideas: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hSEx5bc67Rc.html

@@rehoboth_farm At least the woody parts aren't as irritating as the needly parts of the pineapple core. More like the long-term indigestion that comes with having to pay old lady Toole's monthly Dixie bill. I think she drank all that Dixie just so she wouldn't have to ask the pharmacist for "a**-burns".
