Ok, I had to take notes for comments because, well that how I do lol 1- As a person who has has been in the "Prepping Lifestyle" for a double digit number of years I laud you for your measured approach in talking about the subject. I was, years ago, fairly deep into the greater "community" and even had a media presence within it. I associated with some of the more well known persons within the community and many of them, unfortunately, were simply cashing in and selling out, thus encouraging the trope that prepping is fringe, cringe, dangerous, and extremist. Furthermore, the subject does tend to draw attention to oneself if discretion and common sense is not employed when communicating with and educating others about the subject. The fact is that like almost anything in life, if you take care of the little things, then the big things are more easily managed. We do not need a griddown or international economic crash or nuclear war to have good reasons to prepare. Start small, the person with 9 meals, 6 bullets, and a basic first kit than their neighbors is the one eyed king in the land of the blind. Research Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. 2- Regarding precious metals, always remember that man cannot eat gold. However, precious metals has their place in your preps. Going by Maslow as a guide, PMs are a pre disaster or a 2 or 3rd order survive or thrive asset. By that, I mean that PMs are an inflation hedge and that is important. In the centralized and corrupt fiat currency back global economy, inflation is built in at around 3-7% annually. It's a scheme cooked into the recipe. Simply put, your dollar is worth $0.03 less every year, even in economic booms. Ask yourself who benefits from that. Precious metals hold their value and typically do much better with economic downturns. $1USD in pre 1964 quarters is currently worth $22.04 in today's market closing. That's a 22x ROI. How many market assets do that? The next part of their worth is the 2-3rd order Maslow effects would be after a measure of local stabilization has taken hold after a multi regional collapse of federal authority that causes a currency distrust. Then PMs could be employed as portable value for goods and services. 3- Firearms. As a person who has been around "unsecured" firearms since the day I came home from the hospital and a person who carries daily for work and personal reasons, I believe that it behooves every lawful citizen to familiarize yourself with firearms. The Founders did not include the second amendment because of deer and duck hunting, nor was it simply for personal and familial protection. It was for a more visceral reason- to protect the very natural rights that every human is born with and can only lose by voluntary actions. All other legitimate reasons for owning and bearing firearms arises from that simple reason. For the sake of small preparation, the .22lr caliber is all one absolutely HAS to have. Yes, you are dependent upon the system for ammo and that reloading them is far from practical but the facts are that ammo is relatively cheap, fairly easy to obtain, weighs next to nothing, can be a currency in itself, can keep protein on the table, assist in defense, and has an exceptional shelf life. Additionally, enterprising people CAN reload them or any rimfire cartridges and that might be good skill to have. Platforms that shoot .22lr can be had for under $100 in non ffl transactions. Suffice it to say that there are more than one in my inventory and as a trapper, I use them many times week during winter months. The other consideration for sustainability are muzzleloaders. While I have owned and hunted with these, they were percussion rifles and depended upon modern powders, bullets, and metallic primers. There is an ongoing national shortage on primers and certain modern powders and you are dependent upon the system to make them, unless you are an enterprising sort who can reload primers with toy caps. I am looking into the older type of muzzle loader and those are flintlocks. Everything component to shoot them can be made from easily sourced items. They are quite sustainable and effective when properly employed. Another option are big bore airguns but they are different topic. Finally, muzzleloaders and airgun are NOT legally considered firearms by BATFE. Any person over 18 can obtain and possess them unless state laws preclude it. 4- Trade items are important and you did a good job of making that case, imo. Go to dollar and thrift stores and pick up simple things. A surplus of dental supplies, otc meds, first aid supplies, feminine hygiene products, clothing staples, long shelf life baby products, hand tools, canning supplies, non powered kitchenware, toiletries, cleaners, matches, lamp oil, kerosene, alcohol (not just drinking kind), vegetable seeds, etc can be obtained in surplus amounts and stored in a small footprint to be traded for shortfalls that you may need. 5- Water filtration is a biggie. Water insecurity might be humanity's greatest problem globally. I have spent decades of my life in occupations that took me to developing and emerging nations in Central America, South West Asia and Far East Asian mainland. I have seen entire regions in the US reduced to temporary third world status. In EVERY instance, Water quality killed people, including in the Gulf region of the US post hurricane Katrina. I have held babies that only had hours or days of life left without medical assistance because of dirty water, EVEN IN THE UNITED STATES. MORE THAN ANYTHING OTHER THAN WAR CHILDREN, THAT BABY IN MISSISSIPPI HAUNTS MY DREAMS ALMOST 2 DECADES LATER. It really effed me up, I'm not too proud to tell you now, after finally reaching out. If you build your own filtration, still boil the filtered water since filters are hit or miss for microbial pathogens. 6- Lighting and fire were possibly mankind's first use of science and technology. Faith and mythology devote time to the discovery and employment of this chemical process. Natural fats and fibers can replace petroleum lighting fuels. Dave Canterbury has a great video where he uses cloth, turtle shell and rendered raccoon fat to make an oil lamp. Over the summer, I rescued a feral bee colony from a tree service. I was left with much of the comb. I experimented and recovered much of the wax. It was messy, since I was flying by the seat of my pants, but I now have sandwich baggie holding beeswax that I poured into a silicon mold I found for $0.99 at the thrift store (it was a hexagonal candy mold ironically lol) I use beeswax in my hobbies but it could easily be turned into candles. Animals with hard fat like herbivores like cattle and deer have can be rendered for tallow candles, as well. 7- Print references are life. Again thrift stores and used book stores are gold mines. Foxfire and older books are some if the best resources. Magazines like MEN like you mentioned are good ut don't forget Grit, Fur Feather Fish, Outdoor Life, woodworking, American Frontiersman and a slew if other magazines. Old college textbooks on math and architecture or building practices are good. Canning and gardening books. Old scouting handbooks. Military manuals, Maps and atlases. Don't forget paper, pencils, and rulers. An old drafting table or the desktop portables that arts and crafts stores sell are very handy when Autocad is not available. Finally learn non technological hobbies. Hobbies develop skills. Whittling, woodcarving, and hand powered woodworking. Analog photography, fishing, and hunting. Canning, gardening, hiking. Paddling watercraft and musical instruments are all things that are useful, especially in disasters.

Good videos. Thought provoking information. I like that you are less of a “sky is falling” prep-per w/ going to extremes right now and more of someone who is practical-prepared as in here are possible options and need based on grid issues and getting there. More about lifestyle changes. More, it can be done by anyone at your ability and less fear. Well done. You are a very good communicator.

Just a suggestion. “My Self Reliance” RU-vid channel is brilliant to learn how to live totally off grid. He has built two cabins and outdoor buildings using hand tools and timber from his property. Although not in Alaska, he has similar weather to you and is very educational. He uses a bow and arrow for hunting, so that might be something you might like to learn how to use.

At a minimum everyone should be prepared for a short term need. I just don't think a long term option is to just store as much as you can. It needs to get replenished. Or in a year, or however long until you run out, you right back where you started and resupply is harder to get.

That telegraph, HAHAHA! If you have electricity, you can use various types of radios for communication. HAM, GMRS, CB, FMRS, etc dep upon your needs. Being prepared, with skills, knowledge, tools, and appropriate supplies should be everyone's goal to reduce the impact of unexpected life events. Certainly self preparation like yourself is excellent. However, I will suggest that "going it alone" can sometimes be not the best method. We should all attempt to learn something about our neighbors, our immediate community. We are much more likely to survive, even thrive, through negative events when we share our skills, tools, knowledge. I suggest that you read the story of explorer Edward Shackleton, and specifically why he chose the crewman for the ship Endurance. Together, required every mans unique ability to survive the shipwreck. My thoughts, if you have lard, flour, fruits, and an oven, PIES will be excellent barter. And safely store up clothing, cheap from the thrift store. I doubt that society will ever deteriorate to "clothing optional". HAHAHA!

Just a whole lot of very wise counsel contained in this episode Alone. Folks do need to be prepared! That is one reason I keep building what I do here on the Pungo Prairie. I will have three structures here on the property that will be able to house both of my kids and my grandkids too. Including their mother should it come to that. I never considered myself to be a “prepper”, But I suppose I have always been. I am fortunate here to have been able to hand drive a well with a pitcher pump that I can hand pump for water. Of course I have a deep well too that I can hand pump water from also. Thank You for this very informative video Alone. I really appreciate you bringing up the importance of being well armed and proficient in the use of firearms as well! God Bless My Friend!

Hello Bill! Always nice to see you in the comments! I don't consider myself a prepper either. Its just more a way of life. I want to live a more pioneer lifestyle but I just think I was born in the wrong century! That's nice that you are making sure all your family has a place to go "just in case"! I knew when I bought my place that a well would be an issue for me but that's ok. 8-9 months of snow covers that! And definitely firearms! And practice! Even if you live in the city! Maybe even especially if you live in the city! Thank you so much Bill!

Plenty of Spruce trees around me. And Aspens. And yeah even split firewood should dry for a season or two! Great idea on leaving them standing though. As long as the winds doesn't knock them over. Dead fallen can be harder to harvest if they sit in water/soil of any kind. Thank you so much Ken

I logged in south east Alaska for years cutting timber 4 helicopters cut lots of Lzs. Landing zones. U have more than enough room for 10 helicopters 2 land. If you can park a vehicle they can land. I've cut big spruce trees down on sides of mountains and helicopter come in and drop us off or pick us up. Dont need a platform to land on. If you could get a GPS cordanance would help. Ahhh thank you so much Carri! The water filtered that way still would need to be boiled to get rid of microbes but it does a great job of cleaning the water. Watched a RU-vid channel i think in Vietnam where they built a water filter that way using mud pots. It was like all in the same day to build but it can take some time for the water to make it through. So happy you learned something!

The small preps are very important. I know a person who just last night after midnight found them in a situation where their training and EDC paid off. They were traveling a relatively remote section of wooded road that feeds into one of the most violent cities in the US and near a trailhead for hiking they passed a man splayed out facedown on the shoulder of the road. The person had emergency medical training and military/security experience.. They crossed the lane to the shoulder and parked in a way go facilitate a fast getaway if necessary and that protected the body from vehicles to some degree. They approached with a flashlight and pistol to find a non responsive person who only twitched their fingers after the responder tried to check for a pulse. Long story short, it was a local media show host who was passed out miles from any bars and without a vehicle. The responder was able to call 911 and render other aid until the medics showed up. The responder was sure they were approaching a dead body at first then was able, due to training, experience, and EDC equipment, to immediately pivot to medical response while using experience as a trained observer to pass info to EMS. This person was prepared for something less than doomsday.

100% agree with you there! Basic EDC is just common sense to me. I always got teased for carrying a tourniquet but I was also conceal carrying. And taking some basic first aid courses and having simple first aid could be the difference. Like Skinny Medic always said "You never know when you will be the first responder"

@@AloneinRemoteAlaska The sad thing is that ever since I got my first Spyderco pocket knife as a teen in the late 80s, I have made knives EDC. If I had a dollar for evertime someone came to me to borrow a blade, tool, or light in everyday situations, I could afford to hire my own security detail lol. Often when the request seemed a little random, such as I was the first asked in a setting of mostly strangers, people have told me that I just looked like I might be someone who would have the item in question. Never knew what to make of it. Compliment or veiled insult, at least I usually had a possible solution. EDC does not have to be expensive, cumbersome, or inconvenient. As I get older and a little scatterbrained at times, I kinda have an almost OCD mantra before leaving the house. I repeat, aloud, each item of EDC and physically touch it or the pocket to verify that I have it.

As usual, you have given me different nuggets to consider. I was never one of the "doomsday prepper" types, but I'm a country girl that grew up in the rural mountains. So, I knew and learned from an early age how to prep for winter storms and loss of electricity, etc.

Even if it is just for one storm. It gets addictive sometimes though. My idea of pioneer living was not for prepping, more just the way I want to live. But I am weird I know! 👋 Hi from New Mexico 🌶️🌵....I got the books also. Started canning in the 80's. Even here it gets cold enough for your jars can break and have even wraped. Also I dried food. I've put bay leaf in my flour and oats to prevent weavels. But now Im so interested in the freeze dry because of the food being light weight and will last for decade's.
