Alexander Boyd talks about the basics of stone masonry. He trained at the Wells Cathedral Stonemasons School in Somerset, UK. During this time, he competed in stone masonry competitions in the UK, placing in the Top 3, and trained to compete in the World Skills International Trade Competition. He relocated to Canada and has worked on the restoration of several prestigious historical buildings including Parliament Hill (Ottawa), the Saskatchewan Legislature (Regina), and Historic City Hall (Calgary). Currently based in Calgary, he does both contracts for historical buildings, but is focusing on the artistic side of stone masonry now.

About the Calgary Civic Trust
The Calgary Civic Trust funded this project. This project aims to create awareness and advocacy about the loss of heritage skills and knowledge in Alberta and across Canada. This phase of the project is largely focused on learning about and understanding the various trades and crafts used to construct buildings in the past. As cities grow and evolve, so do the construction methods used to meet their changing needs, and it is integral to create an awareness of the role heritage conservation plays in these processes. It will feature interviews with individuals involved in heritage trades and create content that spreads awareness of the industry and its importance.
Video filmed and edited by Caitlind Porter, Heritage Trades Associate. The project head is Dave Chalmers, owner of Chalmers Heritage Conservation Ltd., the current President of The Calgary Civic Trust, and is a member of various grassroots heritage initiatives.
