The Black Book Interactive Project (BBIP) - part of the University of Kansas's History of Black Writing project (HBW) - is a digital archive of over 7,000 Black-authored texts. It launched in 2010 and has received funding from KU, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), and the Andrew Mellon Foundation. PhiloLogic, a searchable online metadata platform from the Textual Optics Lab at the University of Chicago, powers BBIP's HBW Novel Corpus.
This presentation, conducted by HBW and BBIP in association with NEH, introduces BBIP scholars to Sarah Potvin, including biographical information and many of her projects.
Sarah Potvin is an Associate Professor of English, College of Arts and Sciences at Texas A&M University. She received an M.S. in Information Studies, at The University of Texas at Austin, and her A.B. in History & Literature at Harvard University. Her academic publications include contributions to "A Critical Survey of Open-Access Policies in US Land Grants," "When a Repository Is Not Enough: Redesigning a Digital Ecosystem to Serve Scholarly Communication," "The 'Wicked Problem' of Neutral Description: Toward a Documentation Approach to Metadata Standards," and "Towards a Seamful Design of Networked Knowledge: Practical Pedagogies in Collaborative Teams." She is also the singular writer of "And Who Will Review the Review(er)s?." Her research projects cluster around community knowledge and public humanities, digital representation, humanities data, scholarly communication & open access, and critical university studies, with attention to gender, race, and ethnicity. Much of her work revolves around the formation of communities of practice (such as open source software communities) with shared values, standards, protocols, and tools. scholars.libra...
