Portland’s Heritage Tree program began in 1993 to recognize and preserve trees with special significance to the city by virtue of their size, age, type, or horticulture or history. We follow the selection committee made up of citizens and botanical experts as they assess this year’s nominees, with special concentration on the Zahner family’s southern Catalpa tree.

This was much more interesting than I thought it would be. But I pay attention to trees. So it figures I'd like it.

I love this program and was saddened when Portland's first heritage tree (and the oldest elm in the state??) had to be taken down last month because of damage. It was kinda cool to see the committee at work determining who this year's heritage trees will be. thanx for another great video, OPB

I loved to see this! We need more thoughtful programs like this to preserve what makes our places beautiful and vibrant.

I spent a big part of my childhood climbing in a magnificent copper beech near Boston. After my parents sold the house when dad retired, the new owners cut it down to make a tennis court. The lot was almost 2 acres. Plenty of space for their f*çking tennis court!

I would love to learn more on how to properly prune my Beech tree. I'm about ready to rent a lift cut it back, prevent it from becoming a hazard. Appears to be around 75 years old.

You need to get someone different to measure. It was just under 12 ft

I love trees. But when I am paying over 16k a year on property taxes on a house valued over 1.5 million and the city says they own the trees on my property is complete BS. I have Douglas firs that were planted like corn. They are a mess and the city says I can’t touch them. If there is anything you can grow here, it’s trees. Cut bad ones down and plant better ones. I’m very tempted to be shady and do away with them.

Love some pretty trees. But they make it so you can’t redevelop property where they are, at the very least it makes it extremely challenging. Given the housing crisis it’s a little disappointing. Given where they are located too, it seems like a real externality is that wealthy neighborhoods will limit housing development.

A good architect can work about established trees-and should.
