He had no idea that a large city in North America was actually French-speaking. It is somewhat bilingual, but outside of Montreal in the Province of Quebec, a large part of the population speak French only ( no English ). As a young person travelling through Quebec, I was stunned. I thought everyone in Canada spoke English.
