Full video available for free at: fora.tv/2013/02... President Jimmy Carter provides his take on the movie version of the rescue of American hostages from Iran in the Ben Affleck film Argo.
I think what's being missed here is that they had a parliament with 400+ people vote for it, and not a single leak. That speaks volumes of the civic responsibility they represented.
@Andy at Three Yard World Unlike the Republicans today serving fossil fuel, insurance and big pharma companies, believing crazy conspiracy theories and peddling retarded religious theories like creationism. Go whistle.
@@johnaustin5677 I don't think you thought this one through. It's like saying there are more whistleblowers amongst Democrats than Republicans. It tells you something about who does the wrongdoing and who wants something dine about it.
i to thought the movie belittle the Canadian role, but as a Canadian i also realize that American public want to see movies where they are the heroes, so way to go Hollywood for mixing the truth up yet again, and thank you mr carter for setting the record straight
While it's true Ken Taylor was given a bit more credit than was due immediately after the event, it was because the US was afraid that if Iran knew the CIA was active in their country, a lot of the hostages would have been harmed or even killed. That being said, the movie did minimize our involvement & the risk it put our people through. The reason many Canadians reacted with some negativity was because we often feel slighted by America. For example, on 9/11, we allowed American airliners to land at our airports even though there were concerns of more hijacked planes. Since the US shut down their airspace for a few days, the passengers were unable to return home. In the smaller towns like Gander NFL, there were very few hotels, so the people living near the airport opened up their homes & invited the passengers to sleep & eat their homes, while they went to sleep in church/school basements. At a speech made by Bush Jr., shortly after he thanked several countries for their assistance on that day, Canada wasn't one of them. Furthermore, we've been criticized for not going to Iraq, even though we fought in the toughest spots in Afghanistan, taking a highly disproportionate number of casualties. A show on Fox News even spent time making jokes about our military's involvement in Afghanistan, on a day when 4 of our soldiers returned home in body bags. I don't think it's that Canadians want or expect huge gestures of appreciation, rather it's the minimization & the intentional slights that bother many of us. Regardless of this, I can guarantee that Canadians will continue being good neighbours despite the way we feel about any of the things I've mentioned.
Does anyone wonder why some Canadians just don't want to back "Merica". I don't want any of our men and women in this fight when clearly they dont give a shit! Let them deal with their own shit and mistakes alon
That is NONSENSE...of course Iran knew the CIA were working in Iran...it was the Canadians who faced capture or death if it was found out they were harbouring Americans in their HOMES !! As Carter stated...this unfolded over weeks and the CIA operative was there for 1.5 days !! There was NO chase at the end of the flight...no drama at the airport at all. That was all added by Affleck to MAKE MONEY !! Affleck is a LIAR and a CHEAT !!
@@xypaddy1 its not just Affleck... its producers and the Americanization teneencies of hollywood. They love making America out to be better than what they are. Which is why Americans think they live in the best country while in reality its one of the worst first world countries
Yes. When the CIA guy says “So we’re not Satan for today”. Even til today, we got damn Canadians trying to take credit. If you search RU-vid “Canadian Caper CIA CANADA”. “They’re saying “O Canada 🇨🇦 “ I wouldn’t except any less Lolol
mr. president carter you have always been my favorite president, and now even more so. thank you so much for speaking the truth. and also for all your humanitarian work, you will always be remembered.
Amazing story.... but man, you cannot deny, especially when in a cold theater watching the whole film..... that whole ending airport scene is one of the most tense exciting fictional things I've ever seen, and all for an event we ALL know the ending to. That's brilliant film making right there.
I feel I have to stand up for my countrymen here. Mr Carter speaks in error at 1.20 when he says that the British turned them away. A little research shows that to be false even though the same falsehood is stated in the film. They were initially unable to get to the British Embassy (which was soon to be overrun itself) due to the massive protest and general chaos. Over the next few days they were helped by the British when hiding out in a diplomatic compound. New Zealand and Sweden were also involved in providing protection until they could get to the Canadian Embassy. When 'factual' films are made they should be as accurate as possible. To not mention the help provided by UK and NZ could be excused as it was not of major significance to the main plot. However, to include dialogue stating that both countries refused to help (as the film does) is inexcusable.
Is anyone really surprised that Argo portrayed the typical "American Exceptionalism" cliche ? A lot of Americans aren't so caught up in it but A LOT of them suffer from delusions of grandeur... This is nothing new. lol
The most honest and decent President of the USA in my lifetime. When I was twelve(1980), I remember my Dad talking to my Mom. My Dad stated that 'he would not be re-elected, because he was to honest'.
Thank you Mr Carter for letting the truth be known. Ben Affleck obviously wasn't talented enough to make a movie without 'Hollywoodizing' it. I remember this event very well. I was shocked when I heard that the Americans had gone to the British Embassy & were turned away. I cried watching the Americans on TV being led away blind folded and cried again when I found out that my Country stood by our neighbours & kept them safe. I don't want to hear the hate & 'smack' talk. We are 2 great Countries who will always have each other's backs. RIP Ken Taylor and thank you for making Canada proud.
Bonnie Case right... because ONLY Ben Affleck “hollywoodizes” movies based on real events? Ugh... newsflash genius... EVERY movie based on true events gets hollywood touch added to it otherwise nobody would watch it... probably including yourself
It's a 2 hour movie... it HAS to be dramatized. Ben Affleck is infinitely more talented than you, who could never make a film if your life depended on it lol
Hostage escape aside, I think Carter is one of the most unrated US Presidents ever. He really was a great President, not just for the US, but a great face for the free world & for his great international relation/diplomacy skills back then. I just wish the Americans would see that too. I have a world of respect for this great man & would love to meet him.
I have a personal affinity for this movie. Because in 1987-88 I was peacekeeping in the middle east. A reoccurring significant event was the appearance of Iranian political refugees seeking assistance because they were fleeing persecution from the Islamic Regime. All we were instructed to do was refer them to downtown Nicosia office of the International Red Cross. The fathers were so happy to hear this they practically shook your hand-arm right out of its socket. They were the politest and most tastefully dressed refugees I ever seen in my life. Spoke English better than me. Nice carbon units!
Pity he didn't acknowledge that some of those US citizens ended up in the New Zealand consulate home. And he could have acknowledged the role the CIA agent played; was he the local hero as portrayed in the movie?
I'm amazed that they even acknowledged Canada tbh. They don't really appreciate anyone that helps them out as rule. Most of them don't even know there is a country called Canada or New Zealand. But I think New Zealand is so Superior .... for what it's worth.
I must say...there was a lot of coverage in the wake of 9-11 when Canadian towns landed hundreds of planes and took care of tens of thousands of Americans. All three major networks did several stories over the years...mostly about Gander, Nfld that has a population of about 10000 and took in just under 7000.
Carter sharing anecdotes demonstrates just how high his IQ really is (I think it's 160ish). His memory is scary good. Perhaps Carter's problem is that he was too smart to be a good President. I say this as a good, honest conservative with faults....
yes definitely, if you ask someone from outside the states who was a good president - many would say Jimmy Carter! He's smart, engaging, nice and kept the states out of wars. T'is a shame his successor basically put the nail in the coffin in the states
His memory is indeed scary good - he mentions the prime minister at the time was Joe Clark, which he briefly was, when even many of us Canadians wouldn't know that XD Clark's prime ministership was less than a year long and sandwiched between the otherwise unbroken 15-year tenure of Pierre Trudeau.
Faulty memory at 1:22. The British diplomatic staff did take them in at their residential compound (the embassy itself was invaded by protesters). However, that night, the compound was targeted by protesters and the British told them the next morning that it was not safe to continue to stay there.
Funny. In the movie they made the point that the Iranians were educated in the United States. President Carter rightly claims they were educated in Germany. Hollywood again wanting to rewrite history.
Carter is probably the highest achieving president of all time ; graduate U.S Naval academy third in class, commanded an attack submarine in the south Pacific during WW2 , commanded USA's second nuclear submarine, phd nuclear physics as well as world political history, governor of Georgia. His post presidency was nothing less than amazing.
Kind of a shame that they always want to up the drama to... pretty ridiculous degrees. On the other hand I suppose, maybe the general audiences would indeed not buy as many tickets if it wasn't an anxiety pumping thriller.
The problem with president Carter is the people he had around him, most of his cabinet was already picked before he ever set foot in the White House. Personally I think he was one of our better presidents. His presidency was marred by taking council from the cronies that were on his cabinet and surrounding hangers on. The whole Iranian problem started to unravel once the British and American intelligence led a coup to overthrow Mohammed Mossadegh and re-installed the Shah. The religious and secular tension grew during the preceding years especially after the white revolution of 1963, and solidified the opposition after the 2500 year celebration the shah put on in 1971, this placed the rule of the shah on a collision course on which there was no return. Once Khomeini came into power after the shah abdicated in 79 it was only a matter of time before American presence in the region would be challenged.
Canadians need to stop being so darn sensitive. Canada is so culturally similar to the US that some US states have less common culture to the core population of the US than any region of province of Canada. For example: Hawaii. Heck, nothing is more red, white and blue than country and western and some of the best c and w is Canadian. And so on, and so on...
Citizenrichie What do you mean Canadians have to stop being so sensitive? This was a big accomplishment and act of heroism for Canada and we're suppose to just shut up when we don't get any credit for it? It's like someone making a movie about the moon landing and having it be Russians that first landed a man on the moon lol. Maybe not that extreme but I hope you get the point.
I'm not one of these trolling Americans who tease Loonies with with childish nonsense. I have noticed a strong cultural shift lately where Canadians have become arrogant and full of touchy pride. Maybe it's the Internet? Maybe it's because the US has a black problem and you guys don't? Don't know the cause but I notice the effect. I love Canada. Always have, always will. My dad told me I was conceived @ the Montreal Expo so besides being really embarrassed by my goofy dad...I'm sort of Canadian!!! The Québécois sort!! Lulzzzz
Citizenrichie You probably saw that video where a Canadian soldier beat an American soldier in tug of war and took it too heart. There was probably some Canadians in the comment section gloating but there was no doubt also Americans hating on Canada because of a stupid game.
So, basically, the movie Argo was historical nonsense. The basic events were true - but the rest was pathetically erroneous. Typical Hollywood. BTW - that guy with the 'H' did some REALLY fast thinking under pressure there.
President Carter seems like a great soul. For them to pretend to make a movie is smart, especially what would happen if they got caught. History was made here
I learned about this incident through the Argo film, got intrigued and wanted to learn more. Now whenever I think about this incident I don't search for the Argo film, instead I watch the old TV film from 1981 "Escape from Iran: The Canadian Caper" which can be found on RU-vid. It's not as dramatic or clear or as easy to watch, but I prefer it.
swissair never flied their B747 into Teheran..DC8 yes and later DC10 and Airbus 300..but never the Jumbo...and how can the airplane be out of Iranian airspace within 20minutes??
My grandmother is one year older than he and she too can tell some great stories. She survived the great depression among other things, She was a newly wed when WW2 broke out now she is watching GD2 wonder if she will see WW3 ?
Are all these people blind or did they miss all the parts showing Canada helping. The passports and the end thanking Canada for all their help and safe passage. Showing them congratulating the Prime Minister. It's all there in the movie.
Argo is an "Ethiopian African word which means "when he grow up". that means they were talking about me. the other meaning is "i have to age". that means people are making me age in the homeless state. why? i the witches have no reason.
Carter states here that "the movie ignores practically any contribution by the Canadians". Are you serious? Large segments of the movie are set in the Canadian Ambassador's home, and that Canadian hero and his brave wife are major characters! All the real footage of the 'Thank you Canada' reaction in the US that featured in the movie. I watched the movie ( I'm Australian) and was touched and inspired by the Canadian role - I was not seeing things Jimmy!
