In this video we take a look at the new President Harrison 2 CB radio. We test its power output in standard spec and explore the different modifications to see how far this little radio can be pushed. All in the name of science and general interest. Its a decent radio but the menu system leaves a lot to be desired. Please President, just add a few more buttons to the radio and keep it simple and user friendly.
Thank you to the video sponsor PCB Way and you can visit their website at www.pcbway.com/ for all your PCB manufacturing needs.

Just found ya. Did not realize the Brits were still into CB`s too. I have always had a bunch of CB radios since I was 10 years old. Thats over 50 years ago. Even after I became a licensed Ham, I still kept messing with the ten meter band.

Yes me too. There is a certain charm to the 10 meter band which just stays with you. CB is still alive and kicking in the UK but not a popular as in the 90's. All the best and thanks for commenting, 73 MJ7NLK

Hi Ive just pushed the button to purchase one of these superb President Radios, If the high power mod has been done is it possible to run the radio or set the radio up to run a max of 10w output, i tend to chat a lot and would be concerned about the radio running too hot and eventually killing the output transistor or other component damage....cut my teeth on CB radio back in the late 70s early 80s and still frequent the bands, I am also quite excited to be able to work our new 10m FM repeater in West Yorkshire once the mod has been done. Thanks for your very interesting and educational RU-vid Channel ......The Radio will sit nicely along side my President George 2 but be used for mainly mobile work due to its nice size and form factor...Thank You

Hi Karlos, all President radios come in standard mode from factory. If you buy them from specialists like Knights Electrocom or Moonraker then you can tick an option on some models to get them to perform the modification for you. If you bought your radio second hand then its most certainly been lovingly touched by the previous owner. Glad you find the content helpful and informative. All the very best and thanks for watching

Hello there, thanks for the great video. Just want to clarify. Does enough just cut white wire for the higher power (without extending frequencies)? Thank You.
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 5 месяцев назад
You need to do both. You can move the jumper without cutting the wire and have expanded frequencies without the power but not the other way around. If you cut the wire and move the jumper back to standard frequencies it disables the high power mode. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. MJ7NLK

I'm just a beginner in this field and I look around trying to learn littel by little about cb radio. I enjoy your videos very much and the "special informations" about getting the most power are very interesting to have, but as a newbie I miss something in your reviews: of course I can browse to the web site of the manufacturer and have a look at the specs und functions but I think it would be nice to have this informations in one place with the review - i. e.: naming the functions of each radio device and informations about the "importance" (usefulness) and if it really works (for instance the various noise filters). - Or as a not english speaker I might have skipped something ... :)
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 9 месяцев назад
Hi Mr Onion, thank you for your comment and feedback. I am sorry if each feature was not covered in detail. Lots of the features are common with other radios so I dont always cover all features. Here is a quick list of some of the terms which might be helpful to you: ASC = Automatic Squelch Control (President feature) great feature and works really well. S-Meter = Single Strength Meter displays signal strength. VOX = Hands free mode where your voice will activate transmit (i dont use this, limited use in noisy env) ANL filter = Automatic Noise Limiter (works well but if your trying to pickup weak signals turn this off) NB = Noise Blanker, cuts out some background noise. (works well but same re weak signals) High Cut Filter = Removes frequencies outside of the frequency range of the radio Noise Gate = Anti-interference filter CTCSS/DCS = tones and codes that isolate transmissions on the same frequency. If both radios are set with the same code you can hear and speak, otherwise you wont be able to communicate. I hope this helps and i hope you enjoy your radio and the hobby. All the best and thanks for watching

Hi there, the jumper switches the radio into expanded mode but you need to cut the wire to unlock the increased power functionality. You can always move the jumper back (even after you cut the wire) to its original position to revert the radio back to standard. All the best and thanks for watching

Hi, on the board Q110 is the RF Amp, Q121 is the Drive Amp and Q120 is the Power Amp, that goes through a low pass filter and then out to antenna. All of these are located just next to and behind the antenna socket. Will cover more of the board in future videos so viewers can pause and peek at locations of interest. Thanks for commenting, all the best

thats a pretty strong output for a lil guy. When its in operation mode are you able to set which power level you're using or does is it adding them all?
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 10 месяцев назад
Hi Mick, unfortunately the Harrison 2 does not have an RF Power adjustment dial to allow you to change the output. You would have to perform the kungfu moves to get into the services menu to adjust. The Walker 2 or Richard would be needed if you want a dedicated RF Power dial. They are essentially the same radio (share the same pcb) but the Walker is CB out the box and the Richard is HAM 10 meter out the box. Both can be modified to cover the exact same freqencies. That would allow you to adjust the power output on the fly while using the radio. All the best and thanks for watching.

In my Harrisson 2 which is only jumper modified, I have a power setting in the normal menu where I can choose between the 4 watts original and full (5 watts for me), I guess in full modified you will be able to choose between power configurations. @@NLKMediaGroup

Hello sir If I open this station on CB frequencies, will I be able to work on the CB PL network? And how to switch 5/0 khz?
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 9 месяцев назад
Yes you can use the radio on PL frequencies when expanded. To switch 5/0 khz you just hold down the F button for a few seconds. Long press F and you will see t.0 on the screen. Long press it again and it will say t.5. PL channel 1 is 26.960 so on the Harrison: 1. you push the F key twice to switch between band blocks and use the rotary dial to change to band block A and then press F again to accept. 2. Push and hold F until you see t.0 appear. If it says t.5 then repeat until you see t.0 3. Check the bottom of the screen and it says 26.96000Mhz if you are on Channel 1. This will then cover the Polish 40 and allow you to switch to other bands as well. Hope this helps and thanks for watching and commenting. All the best

I'm not really familiar with the differences, would this radio work well/be legal in the US? Is it any different than ours?
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 10 месяцев назад
Hi, this radio is an EU model and is not type approved in the US. President have specific models for the US which usually end with FCC in the name. The US regulator, the FCC, place restrictions on the US models and insist that wide banding and power adjustments are removed. I do not have access to any FCC models so am not able to test them but this is what other viewers have reported. Ordering an EU model for delivery to the US would most certainly not be legal to use (in the US) as its not been approved by the FCC. I have had US viewers advise that they have successfully had EU models delivered but you would be breaking the law doing this so I must discourage you from doing this. All the best and thanks for watching

Do these power increases make such a difference, is the antenna and swr not the most important factors??
@NLKMediaGroup
@NLKMediaGroup 10 месяцев назад
Hi John, yes pumping signal into a poorly tuned antenna will greatly affect the operation of the radio and could also damage it if the SWR is high (reflecting signal back into the radio) . As with anything HF the size and location of the antenna makes a big difference. The old CB antenna adage "height is might" should be observed. 4W is actually a decent amount of power. 8W wont get you double the range but will get out further than 4W using the same setup. A decent 5/8 wave base station antenna with ground plane mounted correctly at height would be far more beneficial than using a small, low mounted, poorly tuned antenna reflecting back loads of the signal. So the answer to your question is yes, the antenna is a vital part of any radio and should be tuned properly. When conditions are right and the skip rolls in (DX) you can speak with people over 1 thousand kilometers away with a good setup using 4W. All the best and thanks for watching.

@NLKMediaGroup

I have quite a few viewers from your region who purchase them from other suppliers and have them shipped into the USA/CAN. It's the FCC who put the restrictions in place and insist on a different version for US/CA. The EU model covered in the video is not just for the UK it is sold in the whole of Europe, India, Russia, etc. The 10 meter band radios don't seem to get the same attention from the FCC and are more often than not identical between regions. The Lincoln 2 plus even has EU and US flags on the front of the box and can be expanded to cover the 11 meter band. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. MJ7NLK
