I thought the same thing. I have watched multiple interviews with him and he is never stumped. He never gives a half ass answer. His ability to dive deep into policy matters is astounding and, love or hate him, Clinton was the same way. He was a policy guru.

The summer of 1963, Kennedy saw the buddhist crisis and knew it can't be won. He also visited the country in 1950s with his brother and they met with DeGaulle and the French leaders. He vowed to never let the US get in the same position as the French against a people who so clearly wanted independence from colonialism. Don't make it a white mans war. He ordered 1000 troops/advisors out by end of 63 when they had near 16k total personnel in country (technicians, advisors, spies, green berets and a few hundred combat troops). I find it compelling that he would have found a way to avoid that quagmire once it became politically possible after the 64 election. The 60s would have turned out so differently and America would have been prospering with tax cuts and reasonable spending.

Kennedy was a keen student of history. He felt that because the French were forced out after being there for almost 100 years had a profound effect on him. He was wise enough to realize that Vietnam was a quagmire without any end!!

@@70hoovie Because he did not want to be seen as soft on communism before the 1964 election, he planned a withdrawal of 1000 american advisor by the end of 1963. Had he been re-elected in 1964 he most likely would have to continued to steadily withdraw Americans from Vietnam.

Kennedy was also greatly influenced by diplomat Edmund Gullion during his visit to Indochina in 1951. He wanted to know the truth about what was happening there and Edmund told him that the French were going to lose the war against the Vietminh and Ho Chi Minh. He also said that if America enters the war they will lose also. The Vietnamese were fighting for the independence from colonialism and were highly motived. This had a great effect on Kennedy. His Senate speech of April 6, 1954, reflects his views on Indochina. You can also read about Kennedy and Gullion in JFK and the Unspeakable by James W. Douglass. Although his premise that Kennedy came into the White House as a Cold Warrior who changed his mind, I disagree with. Kennedy’s foreign policy was already set before he entered the White House. He supported the struggles of 3rd world nations who had lived under the burden of colonialism and were fighting for their independence from their colonial masters. Congo, Algeria, and Vietnam are just three examples. As for Kennedy’s statement that the CIA in Vietnam was under control, that was untrue and he knew it when he said it. But he couldn’t very well tell the press that the CIA was carrying out its own policy in Indochina contrary to the White House and National Security Council. Article by Richards Starnes printed in the Washington Daily News, October 2, 1963, from Saigon goes into the detail about the conflict between the CIA and military in Vietnam and the Agency disregarding orders from Washington. Another article by Arthur Krock, The Intra-Administration War in Vietnam, in the New York Times, October 3, 1963, also touches on the subject of CIA carrying out its own policy in Vietnam in contradiction to the White House.

@@70hoovie Kennedy said, "we can arm them [the South] equip them, train them, but its their war and they have to win it." Privately he said, "Sending US Troops, "...is like taking a drink. The bands play, the flags wave, but its effect wear off quickly. Then, more troops are required." As part of that talk, he said he would never send traditional US combat troops. Johnson once re-elected, did the opposite. He went all in with US combat troops. They did not have a plan. Their assumptions were wrong. Their approach played to the gorillas benefit. The gorillas did not need much to operate and they had support of the bulk of the population including most of the rural population. The Johnson admin never adjusted and learned from mistakes. JFK deserves some blame, but he did know the score and knew well of the problems the French had. Moreover, the Pentagon should also have known better. We paid the French tab in Vietnam. What were we going to do different?

How to simplify this situation? I couldn't tell because this video says, "The End"; "End of Recording"; and President Kennedy on Saigon. Hanoi and Pyongyang are stronger in Intelligence out of necessity. The point was that there were volumes of pages which Saigon should have admitted to the RECORD, but the C.I.A. held the confidential, and he said he worked with the NSA, Doolittle, McNamara, Tailor, and Murphy. On t.v., he uniquely recognizes that the connection with the woman reporter will elucidate it, but she doesn't QUITE get a handle on it. That is rude. I'm certain and I always thought the C.I.A. supported Kennedy and then destroyed him. Psychopathic killer Ricky Ramirez father was told Jerry Mahoney is a real person and received copies of The Paul Winchell Show that my father doesn't have a copy of. He didn't get along with his father, but his mother was a paralegal and she thought it was hysterical. When things started falling into place, that part got better. Joseph Kennedy wanted a Fall Guy and they never punished him. They now have a recording and will analyze the VOCAL INFLECTIONS. A nurse would say, "That's straight," the machine will land on the right word with the right interpretation with an acceptable mens rea. Then what? Everyone knows there are elephants in Laos and Cambodia, and the Saudis would rather ride their camels. I thought you are supposed to kill the enemy, which is what Prince Harry and Jack Kennedy did. Psychiatrists are very concerned with the conflict this creates. It was morally wrong, because both men had some status, which would make it even better for the United States to blow their head off. I saw one of them talking to my witness and I don't know that I wouldn't, because the police said we all have immunity, and I don't have any signs that OUR TEAM has any immunity at all, and I already gave it up for President Kennedy. If I took an unnecessary risk, it still counts with the shakers and the spinners. In TEACH YOUR CHILDREN, Nixon puts both arms up and the bombs drop down. It's always been known that his treasonous behavior got him into office, telling us if THEY get what they want, the war will end (vote for me.) Take that.

I keep reading about how great the media was back then and so professional unlike today. Really? You really believe that. Well if they were so damn good and professional then how come they didn’t find out who killed JFK or his brother or MLK or others, or why weren’t they strong enough to stop the Vietnam war. Because the answer is they weren’t great journalists or professional media pundits. Because if they were they would have stopped that non sense back then that led to a man getting his brains blow out in broad daylight that day in Dallas in front of thousands of people. They are part of then and now the same hypocrisy and Government controlled Corporate Industrial Military Intelligence Complex that is still in place today. The media has always been the mouth piece of the Government and Big Business

Extreme war criminal. None of the US presidents since WW1 would survive a Nuremberg trial (all would be hung), but Kennedy was arguably then worst. The invasion of Cuba was outright aggression without any purpose. Eisenhower planned it, incidentally, so Kennedy was involved in the invasion as conspiracy against his public even earlier than the actual invasion. After the invasion of Cuba, Kennedy launched a huge terrorist campaign against Cuba, which was very serious. Cuba at that time as well developed socially as the best of Europe, later a devastated place. Bombardment of industrial installations with killing of plenty of people, bombing hotels, sinking fishing boats, sabotage. Later, under Nixon, it even went as far as poisoning livestock and so on. And then came Vietnam - Kennedy invaded Vietnam. He invaded South Vietnam and 1961-1962 he sent Air Force to start bombing villages, authorized napalm. Protests didn’t start until five years later when corporations realised the war wasn’t profitable and so they allowed the protests only because of that. Kennedy also laid the basis for the huge wave of repression that spread over Latin America with the installation of fascist gangsters that were always supported directly by the United States. That went on and in fact increased in intensity under Johnson. Cuba now left in pieces. Economic sanctions and political interference continues in Cuba until today to keep it out of their own public control and instead subservient to US private interests.

"Corporations realized the war wasn't profitable" What?? Since when are wars not profitable to corporations that produce weapons, the mining industry that sources the raw materials to produce said weapons etc. A war that relied heavily on the new style of helicopter-based missions was likely the most expensive type of war ever due to the large level of logistics required to support the helicopters, which required large levels of maintenance to keep them airborne.
