Ma served as the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), from 2008 to 2016. Representing the Kuomintang, he oversaw a significant improvement in the Taiwanese economy over the course of his presidency, and built positive relations with the People’s Republic of China. In an historic step, Ma met with Xi Jinping, in Singapore, in 2015, becoming the first Taiwanese Head of State to meet the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party. Since leaving office, he has given a series of lectures around the world about Taiwan.
