Surangel Whipps Jr., the president of Palau, an archipelago in Micronesia, addressed delegates at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh on November 8, criticizing wealthy governments and oil companies for accelerating the climate crisis. Whipps said Palau has been ‘drawn and quartered’ by COVID-19 and the climate crisis and called on large emitters to take responsibility for the damage they’ve caused.
