Reagan walked in and took his place at the podium without a notecard directing him to do so. His pants were clean and remained so throughout the press conference. He spoke in complete sentences. He did not call only on a preordained list of press. He had harsh words for America's enemies at the time. He had solutions that involved cutting useless bureaucracy not throwing money at it. Was not hustled out after two answers by his handlers. We need another Reagan.
That's the huge problem today is we don't have a Reagan out there that will run after the mess we have now. The last 3 have morally bankrupt us. The 2 dems have done more to defeat us than the Chinese an Russians have combined. The narcissist had great things he did economically an in judicial but his foreign policy was lacking. He was right about Nato and the new green hoax deal where you convince the populous of sea levels rising while you build personal mansions on the coast. He just couldn't shut up which cost us dearly with adversaries ie Ukraine
Absolutely NOT. The gap between the rich and poor nearly TRIPLED under Regan, his economic policies targeted the poor, working mothers and minorities. His failed policies (or lack of) on the handling of the early days of the AIDS epidemic are utter and absolute. His handling of the Iran-Contra crisis was awful. The list goes on. Targeting programs like Head Start and WIC, ugh. Another Regan…. No indeed.
He says he doesn’t know when he doesn’t. When he responds on issues he has an idea, he still acts humble. These are traits of a good human being, which are under appreciated these days.
The WEF leadership that has infiltrated today's western world are horrible humans. And anyone in the supporting Party's are complicit. The pendulum is about to swing swiftly in the opposite direction. Standby...
Wow. I've actually forgotten that a real leader speaks like this. A direct question followed by a DIRECT answer. Oh and no teleprompter [repeats line] NO TELEPROMPTER.
@@geraldhammond3260- They were still leftist dogs, who gave Reagan bad press every chance they got. At the end of the Carter era, they'd gotten used to leaping out of their seats and screaming questions at him like a pack of wild dogs. Reagan made it clear before his first news conference, that those days were over... Hence, their apparent good behavior here. Still, nine out of ten of them hated Reagan, and that's apparent by how they wrote about him on a daily basis.
@@geraldhammond3260 Maybe you would rather stay blinded but I would rather have the press to ask real questions instead of letting Trump just say what he pleases and walks out of the room when we know he's a lying to us. Trump will never really be remembered as a real president because he acts like a petit child. Whether you choose to see it or not that's your choice but he gets in there and he just argues with people like a petit child instead of acting like a man and just answer the question.
No we find out what is Joe's favorite ice cream and why is Trump such a horrible human being and we are told with Joe on the scene we are back to normalcy!
This is so true! Another factor is that we didn't have 24 hour news networks with Talking Heads Shows who would spend the following weeks dissecting and ripping apart every word of every sentence. A POTUS today could not give this type of presser without getting destroyed.
Todays fake news networks cut and paste what the politicians say to fit the narrative that their network wants. Often times their questions are a formed more to a statement than a question.
A man like him could certainly teach today’s pretend leaders these goofs that seam to think they are entitled to the position I mean seriously to go from a part time drama teacher to prime minister. Boy, the politeness and civility back then -- and you actually get far more useful information from the press conference than the adolescent, gotcha, sound-bite, utter chaos of press conferences now. What a contrast.
The contrast between the substance and tone of President Reagan and President Biden could not be greater. What is equally noticeable is how much more detailed and substantive the questions from the press corps were during that era.
What the heck am I watching? An intelligent, articulate president and a press that is respectful? ( I’m early in this, so the press thing might not last)
You mean the contrast between Reagan and Trump! Night and day. Biden is just old and needs to retire but at least he’s decent and leads with compassion and empathy.
@@cedricnicholson7446 Meant what I said. President Trump replied to "questions" (even those which were semi-coherent and merely opposition talking points). Great President, I was in the US in the Australian Navy when he was the Boss, and the USN was at its strongest and greatest during his tenure. The world misses his decency, control, dedication and support for freedom and peace.
At what capacity? Your name sounds familiar, but that was in the 80's and i need a push every now and then to remember some things. And Thanks for serving.
I look forward to the day we might meet in person, in what lies beyond. What a charismatic soul. My favorite president, who's absence is sorely felt in these blighted times.
I'm impressed that the President addressed the press with "Sir," "Mam," "Young Lady." I was only 8 when President Reagan took office. The times must be different back then. Respect and humility was still being observed then.
Americans were lucky enough to have such honest and precious person as their greatest President. I love this man how decent, composed personality he had. We were children when he was president, now through his speeches I understand how much respect he deserved.

Ronald Reagan is the guy who enacted the most strict and harsh gun control laws in the country, California's gun control laws. If you think that's "leaving individual Americans alone" then I don't know what to tell ya. The 2nd Ammendment exists for a reason. Everyone has the right to bear arms. It's the law. But he apparently didn't care about the law all that much. And now Californians have to deal with this stuff that he enacted decades after Reagan died. The spectre of government hangs over the country long after its fiercest proponent, Reagan, stopped standing. Sure he _CLAIMED_ to be anti-government, anti-state, anti-centralisation. But look at his actions, instead of his campaign promises, his words. Like all politicians, he was a liar, and so didn't actually do what he said he was gonna do (be anti-government) but instead actually strengthened it and centralised it even further
I was born in 1978 so I really had no concept of President Ronald Reagan being a child at the time However I do know now that this was a great man a great president. He came in smooth, confident, authoritative, and in control. rest in peace President Ronald Reagan.
Mr. Reagan did more to inform America in those early days of his presidency then others have done in 4/8 years in office. Thank you President Reagan for your efforts and your love for America. Rest in Peace Sir.
He cut taxes and increased spending. He did the exact opposite of what he said he was going to do in the presser. He was more fiscally irresponsible than Carter. Most of y'all get easily fooled by a sweetalking politician (Reagan, Obama), but unlike those politicians, the data doesn't lie.
@@lewisc215 That's what you got out of this? Carter took a radical approach to curbing inflation, so much that he essentially nukes his own presidency and Reagan reaped the rewards. His radical policies damaged the job market in the interim and the deficit spiked under his presidency. Of course, Reagan outdid him by cutting taxes and increasing spending. He didn't make the government smaller, he just shifted allocations ay from bureaucracies and towards national defense, while cutting taxes (i.e., cutting federal income) at a rate unheard of in presidential history. We're still dealing with the effects of Reagan's policies. He killed the middle class even though Republicans see him as a champion of the middle class. It's sad but hilarious. The last fiscally responsible president was Clinton. Every president since has obliterated the budget to the point where there's no possible way to recover.
President Reagon was a great President and Statesman. He loved his country and fought for freedom all over the World. If he is looking down from Heaven now, I am sure he is weeping.
What a difference between things back then and now...Reporters who stood when the President entered and left and actually asked policy questions without filibustering or promoting an agenda.... remarkable
8:16 Reagan's pragmatic view of the USSR was key in bringing Gorbachev to the bargaining table. No BS. He put their feet to the fire militarily and economically and they eventually imploded.
@@crb4059 Right, Gorbachev took over in 1985. But he was the one who eventually saw the folly of trying to keep pace with the US. Reagan had no illusions about who the USSR had in their sights. Just like China does today.
Do you remember when Reagan was President? I certainly do. Perhaps you were too young? That is no disgrace. You are incorrect in saying that he “did not need to read a TelePrompTer.” He certainly did, and was very skillful in doing so. Actually, President Reagan used the TelePrompTer a lot, and I mean A LOT! It was said that he never met a TelePrompTer that he didn’t like. Ronald Reagan was the King of the TelePrompTer. Except for news conferences when he spoke extemporaneously, President Reagan ALWAYS used a teleprompter or note cards whenever he made a speech. Using a prompter made him appear strong, because he was an absolute master communicator who knew how to deliver his lines to the public; he knew how to pause; he understood vocal variety, and he knew how to emphasize certain points. Because he was a trained actor, President Reagan was great at hitting his mark and delivering his lines. There was none better. NONE! On the other hand, speaking off the cuff at Press Conferences was definitely NOT his strong suit, especially as he aged throughout his 70’s throughout his two terms as President. Ronald Reagan was never really comfortable at Press Conferences in my view. JFK, in my opinion, was far Reagan’s superior when speaking at Press Conferences. But he was 30 years younger at the time.
the respect he and the man asking about affirmative action is a thing of beauty...respect displayed on both sides...today's media and politicians have lost their way in that aspect
I was a young man when Ronald Reagan was elected President. I was not a Reagan supporter. I realize now as an old man what a great President he really was. In a 1964 speech he spoke of the thousand years of darkness. I believe we might be experiencing some of that right now. I look back at President Trump and President Reagan as being two of our nation's greatest Presidents. Sincerely, Tom Nigrelli.
"What was great about Reagan was he was he unified everyone and got both sides to agree a d we need a president like that"--my dad, who hates the GOP but will still say Reagan was the best president in his life. Even Barack Obama said something similar in 2008, it's just a shame he couldn't live up to it
This man was respected by both parties, foreign leaders, and an overwhelming number of Americans. He won 49 states in his reelection campaign. The power of Reagan.
He was about 4,000 votes from carrying all 50. He only lost Minnesota, Mondale's home state. And to show you how far left Washington DC, Ronald Reagan, who carried 49 of 50 states and who won an electoral landslide 525-13, who got 59% of the popular vote and won by almost 17 million votes only carried 13% of DC.
Not sure if we’ll ever see a presidential candidate that could ever possibly win that many states again. Just goes to show how far we have regressed in less than 40 years. Even a thoughtful and admired president like Reagan would be hated by many
Definitely the best in living memory. I dread what will happen this November if the Dems win- it will be the death kiss to America. You'll have nothing but identity politics and "taxing the rich".
It hurts to see how far we have fallen, it is not just the the office of the president but look at the journalists, the questions asked, the candor and breadth of the answers. No attempt by either to create sound bites but real questions and substantive answers. The ease that he handles a variety of questions, not being given them in advance, and talking at length extemporaneously on the subjects.
@@thomaswayneward dose not read that way to me, often there is a question where the person who frames the question also tries to controlee what the answers must be or when someone asks a question in a way to get an answer, either they ask a question they know they will not get an answer to and then say .... see he didn't answer, or tries to ask a question where they get an answer on the question that will "look poor" on that person but often the question is not really substantive or in an of itself important. Volker raised rates aggressively and that is clearly not going to have positive outcomes for people in the short term and even though government spending can drive some inflation when it is paid for by expanding money supply, moderating government spending is not really a mechanism through which inflation can be tamed. It was a fair question to point out that programs to grow the economy and raising interest rates are at odds with each other. While I agree that she is not simply asking a question in a neutral way it is substantive and legitimate. It is not a gotcha question like we often see now.

The Department of Education was brand new, created in 1979 at the tail-end of Carter's administration. The Dept. of Energy was created in 1977 to oversee rationing during the energy crisis. Amazing how much more civil our parents and grandparents were to each other. Still tough questions, still different points of view but proper respect was shown.
Because we were disciplined when we were kids. We were told right from wrong. If we failed, we were told to try again, failure builds character. We were told no, and our parents meant it. We were taught to work for what we had, no one owes us anything. Sadly, all this is and has been missing
This man never used a tele-prompter to speak. Didn't have easy questions that were pre-planned. And took questions from individuals who did not always agree with him, without animosity, hostility, or bias. How things have changed. And not for the better.
