I love how the President in this entire sequence is more worried about everyone else. Even shot he is still checking in on his team - the agent with his hand, where is his family, and then ensuring continuity of government.
I do like that about him. And the agent, even with a bullet through his hand, never hesitated a moment to due every ounce of his duty. I hope they took the president's order and let him have an aspirin.

If I remember correctly, Reagan had a similar situation when he was shot. They didn't know at first that he'd been shot and when they got him to the hospital he joked with the doctors. I think he said, "I hope you're a Republican."
Exactly! Other than a little tachycardic, those numbers are all damn good. Did you notice the nurse on the right was looking pretty relaxed once she got the vitals done? Another tiny detail on the show that made it amazing.
I love Jed Bartlett’s character. Shot, but still joking around and keeping things light but knows when to get serious with Leo. God damn this series was phenomenal
Some of the one-liners shown in this scene from TWW is based on, or borrowed from, the 1981 attempt on Reagan. Following the shooting, the President told First Lady (Mrs Nancy Reagan) he "forgot to duck". In true classic Reagan style, the President furthermore said he hoped the attending medical personnel "were all Republicans"...
I don’t know why, but for some reason, the shot of Mrs. Landingham running out of the White House office without saying a word always gives me chills. Maybe it’s because you can feel her fear and urgency even from the back angle-she NEEDS to get to Bartlett immediately, and damn it, she WILL.

The agent and the President were talking and the agent saw blood on the President's mouth. The agent examined his back and saw the main wound. It was frightening, even though it was a TV show.
And to think it was caused by a white supremacist trying to kill Charlie (because the thought of a black man sleeping with the president's daughter enraged his racist mind). Hatred and racism only causes the innocent to suffer.
@@blastermasterguy Right wing, conservative, White supremacist acts of violence have been a serious issue and threat in the United States if America for the past 40 years approx ( as a ballpark figure) and on January 06, 2021 that threat flourished and expanded to include insurrection in the pursuit of an internal coup and the overthrow of democracy. What's worse is that it was goaded on and incited by the sitting President of the United States via lies, misinformation, dog whistles and siren calls which were echoed by Republicans who were elected to be public servants and who swore an oath to support and defend, not the leader of their party, but the Constitution of the United States of America; the very Constitution that they sought to subvert and destroy. Weaknesses within our institutions and our system of checks and balances were exploited and even after the American people used the power of the vote to remove the offending party; the wanna be dictator, from power, the system still yet was attacked and manipulated by him and still very nearly failed the free citizenry of the United States of America. What happens in the future if those weaknesses aren't strengthened and-or other means are employed etc and legislation is passed or situations-emergencies are manufactured to deprive the people of the opportunity to protect this democratic republic via the vote at the ballot box? How bloody and how successful might another coup attempt prove then? What other means of protecting this democracy could be deployed then? Even now, after the offending wanna be dictator is out of office, and even after the failure of his attempted coup, and even as the insurrectionist riotous mob members begin to be held accountable by the Justice system, still yet even now there are Senators who both openly and surreptitiously continue to deny the severity of the insurrection, deny that fault lay with those who caused and helped to cause and-or to further it, and continue to either openly or privately support the defeated and ousted perpetrator in chief who, for the first time in over two centuries, tried to affect an insurrection against democracy, a coup against and an end of our democratic republic. The Civil War, the second World War, the Cold War, the unrest around the Viet Nam war and the Civil Rights Movement, and the unpublicized attempt to folate a coup against this democratic republic in the early 20th century avoided because of the refusal of the general officer chosen by the coup's conspirators to take part or to remain silent about their plans, are the only times outside of the founding of this nation to carry the weight and import, the perils and opportunities of these times in which we live. So very much is dependant upon our vigilance, our decency, our hard work, our commitment to the high ideals espoused by our United States Constitution.
I love "Ron". A shattered hand and he's still all business: But he sees a speck of blood on Bartletts mouth then manhandles him till he finds the wound and just screams, "BLUE! BLUUUUE!"
They train for this. In the beginning of the episode when Ron called GW emergency, the nurse mentions that if it's a drill..... not to mention doctors who panic aren't the ones you want treating you
A friend of mine was in the ER shortly after the shooting at Northern Illinois University; she found it remarkable how quiet it was while about a dozen people were getting treated. That's the way it is in real emergencies -- no running around or yelling out orders
You missed the best part, at the end Bartlett who is about to have surgery comforts Leo. He tells him him everything is gonna be ok and then gives his best friend a kiss on the cheek. That fatherly instinct to make everyone around him feel safe & protected combined with the deep fraternal love he has for Leo, it makes me cry every time.
When Reagan was shot just before he went under the anesthetic, he told his surgeon who was about to try and take the bullet out that everything was going to be OK.
I always loved Mrs. Landingham in this episode. She has this really underrated moment in this clip when she hears that the President has been shot. No fuss, all business. Don't fuck with Mrs. Landingham...

I love when Barrlet and the Agent were in the car before finding out that he had been shoot Barrlett wanted to have the Agent be taken to the Hospital to get checked out. What I did like about this set of scenes is how much Bartlett is worried about his Agents then himself. He even called to the medical staff to treat the Agent.
The “Well, I’ve been shot.” line reminds me of when Ronald Reagan had been shot, when his wife first arrived in his room to see him on an operating table, he lifted up his mask and said: “Honey, I forgot to duck.”
At the 2:00 point, the look on Leo McGarry says it all. At that moment, he is not the Chief of the Staff to the President of the United States, he's Leo, best friend to Jeb. But he then recovers and snaps back to his duty when he realizes Zoey is right there. Loyalty and Honor in that momenr.
So many lines are more interesting once you know about the MS thing. Did Bartlett joke that the gunshot was his pre-existing condition because he didn't want to disclose the MS? When he wanted Abbey to refrain from "scaring the doctors," was he trying to tell her not to tell the doctors about the MS? Is there some unspoken message passing between Bartlett and Leo? (Just get with the Cabinet .. but not the VP, because we didn't sign that letter).
I love the scene (not in this clip) where the Secret Service grab the Veep and take him somewhere safe. I saw an interview with Dick Cheney where he said that when 9/11 started unfolding, the Secret Service came to get him. He said "I don't remember my feet touching the ground."
You’d think someone with a gaping gunshot wound in their side would be completely incapacitated and focused on the pain, but Bartlet is just talking to people like it’s a mild annoyance. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug our body makes for us. 😂
Saw the entire serie when it was in production, loved it then; and every few years I stumble across a Youtupe vid blurb and fall in love all ovar again. Nothing even comes close to West Wing. I rember when it was first being aired, somebody described it as "America's civic lesion". Time hasno dimished the appeal.
He was hit in this shooting but he was brought into the hospital later than the President. Because he was a bit behind the rest at the time of the shooting he was overlooked at first which is why Leo doesn't know.
What puzzles me is how Margret knew it was a story they would urgently care about. She reacted when there was nothing to see except for the general Special Report screen. There was no particular reason to think it was about President Bartlet. They would put up the Special Report screen prior to, "An F5 tornado has destroyed the city of Des Moines, Iowa. There were no survivors." No, they played it as though Margret already knew what the story would be about without any hints. Goof? Or was she actually part of the conspiracy?
Funnily enough, in season 7 after Zoe is kidnapped (not the funny part) Toby mentions having the president direct trading be stopped. Will, a lawyer, emphatically states that there is NO mechanism for the president to do that. Someone probably told the writing staff after this aired that it was impossible
I like how President Bartlett was making sure everybody else was ok, the SS agent, his daughter, his wife, civilians, coworkers, he checked on everybody else to make sure they were ok, that’s leadership.
The thing I didn't like about this episode was the way Abby spoke to the anesthesiologist. All she had to do was inform him of the Presidents condition. He would have been bound by patient doctor confidentiality. Instead she attacks him.
@@jimmyb227 She was also a surgeon. When she first entered the hospital she spoke to a doctor who told her everything looked good. That should have calmed her. There was no reason for her character to act in that manner.
Do you know how much a doctor makes a year? Let's be generous and say half a million. Do you know how much a story would make telling the press (with real medical records), that the President has MS would make? Millions in hours, maybe billions. There is doctor patient confidentiality, but some doctors would sell their grandmother for that kind of information to get a fortune off of. She was panicked and worried, yes, but she knew that he could sell that story for far more than he’d ever earn as a surgeon. She appealed to him not to, same as many other presidents wives (I am sure), have done with medical conditions that aren’t public.
Missed a fantastic scene before this where the secret service get the VP, you can see him thinking, "If this was a coup this is exactly how they would come for me.."
I thought it was more along the lines of, "There's only one reason why the Secret Service would be in this much of a hurry to get agents around me and get me out of here. The President ..."
One thing I must have missed in this episode. The president and the agent are driving away from the scene in the limo. Suddenly, the agent orders the limo to go to the hospital. How did the agent know the president had been shot and needed to go to the hospital?
I *loved* KJ on Grey's Anatomy when she guest-starred as a patient. She had a towel left inside her by a surgical resident (who actually turned out to be Preston Burke, of all people).
I wonder if in this show they followed protocol for visiting presidents and had an operating room standing by just in case. When President Ford visited our city I had a nurse relative working at the hospital and it was required to have a fully staffed operating room standing by, that nobody else could use.
I'm pretty sure that in a situation where the president is shot, the chiefs of all relevant sections would be called. He wouldn't be treated by the trauma surgeon on duty, he'd be treated by the chief trauma surgeon, same for anasthesiolgy.
And also President Bartlett and Reagan were about the same age as each other in real life which makes it all the more amazing that Reagan survived a "real" shot when I think bartlett looks old enough that I don't know he would necessarily survive a "real shot" at his "age"
@@robertak2659 There is a lot of speculation that he was showing serious signs of Alzheimers during his second term. So if he didn't get shot he might not have really started his Alzheimers until he was out of office.
I prefer before the president arrives ar the hospital. They get call that Bartlett is on the way in and they blow it off saying it wasn't a good time, they were busy. The presidential moderate pulls up and the nurse realizes it's not a drill and she has to activate emergency procedures,.

"Leo can't give an order to the Treasury Secretary and the Treasury Secretary can't follow it." Genuine interest: does this rule get relaxed if Leo is instead relaying an indirect presidential order, as we see at the end of this clip? The TS doesn't have anything verifiable to follow.
