As the country continues to experience the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. personally delivers various government assistance to select farmers, fisherfolk and family beneficiaries from Northern Mindanao in a ceremonial distribution at the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City on May 16, 2024.
These provisions include financial assistance worth PhP10,000 each to select beneficiaries from Iligan City, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental. Meanwhile, the local government of Iligan City receives PhP10.5 million in Presidential assistance alongside the provincial governments of Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental, which receive PhP13.9 million and PhP24.3 million, respectively.
Moreover, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) spearheads the distribution of PhP10,000 each to 9,588 select beneficiaries composed of farmers, fisherfolk and families. Additionally, the Office of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez distributes five (5) kilograms of rice to each attendee.
This is the fourth time President Marcos Jr. has held a similar event in towns severely affected by El Niño, resulting in agricultural damage and water shortages. While the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that El Niño continues to weaken, its impact such as extremely warm and dry weather conditions may linger as the country transitions to ENSO-neutral conditions and eventually to La Niña, which is now closely being monitored.
