Step 1: Apply Saphir Reno Mat (3:20)
The first step to creating a presidential shoe shine is to apply the Saphir Reno Mat to a cotton chamois cloth. Test it on a hidden area of the shoe before applying it to the entire shoe to make sure that the Reno Mat does not react negatively on your shoe. Use moderate to firm pressure and small circular motions in order to rub the hard wax off. Focus on the areas of the shoe where you have a lot of build up of hard waxes- especially on the toe box. This process will take about 3-5 minutes. After you've finished, spritz a bit of water onto the shoe and wipe away any excess Reno Mat. Allow 30 minutes for the shoe to dry before moving on to step 2.
Step 2: Deep Condition with Saphir Dubbin Graisse (7:08)
Apply the Saphir Medaille D'Or Dubbin Graisse using a cotton chamois. Make sure you're only applying the Dubbin across the vamp and on the side of the shoes. Do NOT apply to any of the hard countered areas of the shoe such as the toe box or rear. Allow at least 24 hours for the leather to absorb all the nutrients.
Step 3: Condition with Saphir Renovateur (10:50)
Using light to moderate pressure brush away any excess Dubbin using a large horsehair shoe brush. Apply Saphir Renovateur using your cotton chamois and massage it into the leather, using moderate to firm pressure. Allow 3-5 minutes for the Renovateur to penetrate the leather. Buff away the Renovateur using the horsehair brush.
Step 4: Recolor with Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish (13:00)
Apply a thin layer of Saphir Medaille D'Or Pommadier Cream Polish using a cotton chamois (less is more when it comes to a cream polish) and massage it into the leather.
Step 5: Polish with Saphir Pate de Luxe Wax Polish (17:50)
Apply an even coat of the Saphir Medaille D'Or pate de luxe wax polish using a cotton chamois cloth and massage the wax into the leather using small, circular motions. After applying two coats of the wax polish, let the wax dry. Once the wax has dried, begin to buff the shoe using a horse hair brush.
Step 6: Recolor Edges (21:40)
Apply using your finger and smooth the edge dressing across the edges of your shoe. Allow the edge dressing to dry for 3-5 minutes before moving on to the final step.
Step 7: Condition and Waterproof Soles with Saphir Sole Guard (23:42)
Apply the sole guard to your cotton chamois cloth and massage it into the soles of your shoes.

I hope you're not advising (via subliminal suggestion) that certain folks of a particular pedigree use Petrossian Caviar to shine their shoes? There's a blue/white/red signature tin on the desk behind you that I find curiously utilitarian. Not sure of the odds it being Petrossian, but I've made far riskier bets.

Kirby, I want you to know I just did a presidential shoe shine on my old allen edmonds and it was a raging success. excellent results. I bought almost every product you used in the video from your store and I am very happy with results. I do have one question: what do you recommend for shoe lace care? I would rather not throw away my shoe laces because I have some special ones and a variety of colors and textures. I usually just hand wash them but I am thinking there might be a better way of keeping them looking great longer.
@ЧеловекЗемной-ж8ы
Why is Saphir Renovateur applied after Saphir Dubbin?
@brandonbentley8532

@@psilocybemusashi you will want to wax them. Any old 100% beeswax candle will work. Hold your lace by the ends and run the wax vigorously back and forth up and down the lace. Then I pull my lace through my waxing clothe to even out the texture of the lace. This will make all the fluffy Ness to get stuck down and greatly helps to keep your laces tied.

After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion; in the shower I use a water-activated gel cleanser, then a honey-almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply a herb-mint facial pack, which I leave on for ten minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Great videos! As a veteran, I have long known how to make a pair of leather shoes shine like patent leather but you, along with HangerProject have turned it into a science. I've spent over an hour watching shoe shining videos to make sure I can make my expensive, professional, shoes look good. One question; what brand of shoes did you say were in this video? I couldn't quite hear it in the video. *EDIT:* I figured it out: Cleverley shoes.

Why would one complete a deep-clean / restoration / polish without having first removed the laces? Removing the laces would both eliminate the possibility of soiling the laces with product, as well as provide full access to the surfaces covered by the laces plus the tongue of the shoe, to ensure a thorough job. Was it done for the aesthetic of the video, or do most people truly not treat / polish those areas of their shoes?

Big fan of your work. This is a very thorough procedure. A good video. Too bad I don’t have access to Saphir in my country. Just one thing though- since this is an instructional video and a through maintenance work - you should’ve taken the shoe laces off. But anyway lovely - great vid as always

If you really want a shiny pair of shoes, then use this methode. But use Saphir lotion which is similar too saphir renovateur, but is more a cleaner and then a lotion. You could eventually after that put three layers of renovateur on. Then use neutral shoe cream six layers, cream is more soft then wax. You will notice the renomat get more and more black if its black shoes when wiped off. Over time it will become more grey, and in the end neutral when wiped off. It will take about two till three years, then if its a black pair of shoes then use black cream and wax as showed in this video. The only downside is as long as you use neutral, it will leave a white residue. And the leather will become very soft, this is because you remove the anilin colour in the leather. Untill there is only one layer of anilin, but trust me your shoes will become so comfortable, and breathe better then goretex shoes and at least just as waterproof and very shiny. I wont recommend it on long boots though, they will loose support. But in shoes that have no support, nonewhatso ever not a problem. Thank you Kirby Allison

Question for you, Mr. Allison. I have a handcrafted calf leather dress shoes which was originally a walnut color. I had gotten black marks on it so after trying couple times with Ecco leather cleaner, I gave up and left it with one of the shoe repair shops in town. I went back and to my surprise, my shoe had medium brown on it. He told me when he stripped off the mark and gave conditioning, shoe turned into medium brown color and said there's nothing he could do about getting it back to walnut color. Do you think if I follow what you said on this video, do I have a chance to get it back to walnut color?

@villacorpac
@villacorpac 7 лет назад
lullemans72 The Devon is a much greasier conditioner that's not meant to be used every time you clean your shoes. It is to be used with the initial intense liquid cleaner. Also the Devon is used only where the creases form, the wear and tear, to keep that area moisturized longer. And since it is so greasy it cannot be applied in the area of the shoe where you work your patina. The renovatour is just a conditioner you can use weekly or every two days depending on how often you wear your shoes. Rule of thumb, never use the same shoe back to back.

Hello, what you are referring to as "dubbin," it sounds like, appears to be the exact same tin as the Medaille D'Or. I have a tin of that but how do I know if its the dubbin that goes on early or the Medaille D'Or that goes on as a last step?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 3 года назад
Are you asking which order those steps happen in this video, or how you can tell which tin of yours you are looking at? In the video I summarise all the steps at 21:06, so you can hear that I use the Dubbin conditioner before using the cream polish and then the Medaille D'or Pate De Luxe. If, however, you are simply unsure which tin you own, look carefully at the color. As you can see in the video, the dubbin is a white color. The Pate De Luxe is actually a pigmented wax, and in this video we used a burgundy.

Hi Kirby. I've added the Soleguard to my leather soles after the smooth leather had worn a bit. I had put on about 2 to 3 applications, trying to saturating the leather but it kept absorbing the oil. Then about the same again after an hour and allowed them to sit for about 7 hours before wearing them. The leather still kept on absorbing the oil. After the 7 hours, I did the water test and there were no water proofing and the shoes were a little bit slippery when worn. I must have used about 1.5cm of the oil from the neck to the shoulders of the bottle. What had happened and where did I go wrong? Also, I sole seems to have turned black, before using the oil. No doubt this is because of where I had been with them. Is there a way of cleaning the soles and restoring them to their natural look?

I tried some beeswax polish from loake to keep them maintained but they turned the shoe a much darker brown and have them a cheap looking shine I didn’t like. I then stripped the wax with a cloth and wash and they looked great again (but no maintenance). I then tried loake cream polish. Again much darker brown and the shine I just don’t like at all. I have a question what is the perfect beginner dress shoe for a kid
@kirbyallison

Hard to say. I'd suggest finding a really nice pair of Allen Edmonds on eBay... you can do that easily for less than $50.

Excellent video and helpful. For Edward Green shoes where I used to use "Old Cobbler Brown", now discontinued, find that EG shoes have switched to Japan polish Boot Black. Are these $20.00 polish and past wax really better than the Kiwi $2.99 versions? I see that Johnson Wax bought the Kiwi company. Local retail store has super small shoe polish section which makes me think that sales must be very small; have Nike casual shoes changed the marketplace? Thanks for posting this video; it helps.

The Kiwi stuff is really terrible. There is definitely a HUGE quality difference between Saphir Medaille d'Or and Kiwi, even Lincoln. Boot Black is good, but I still think that Saphir Medaille d'Or is higher quality. I can still smell petroleum in the Boot Black polish I have here in the office.

The Hanger Project is Lincoln a product to avoid? Saphir is the king?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 7 лет назад
Lincoln is okay stuff. It has a nice, high concentration of hard waxes that'll produce a nice shine. The only thing I can say against Lincoln, and the biggest difference between it and Saphir Medaille d'Or, is that Lincoln uses a petroleum-based solvent. Saphir's all-natural turpentine solvent is better for the leather.

Are the Reno Mat and Leather Cleaning Soap interchangeable? Or are they to be used together?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
Totally different products. The Saphir Leather Cleaning Soap is more appropriate for regular use. It's gentle on the leather and won't dehydrate it. The Saphir Reno'Mat like like Drano. You want to use it occassionally, as it will pull off all fo the waxes and pigment from the leather.

Hey there! I'm getting a new pair of leather shoes shipped to me, and was wondering what steps to take for a new shoe in this presidential shoe shine process. Thinking of picking up the Saphir products soon because they're some of the best. Thank you for the great tutorial!

Vanny Wu We are about to publish a video on how to shine a new pair of shoes, so make sure you subscribe to our channel. But, in short, Polish new shoes with the Saphir Renovateur, Saphir Pommadier Cream Polish, and then some Saphir Pate de Luxe Wax Polish. You want to condition and then build the wax finish.

I want to clean army boots which haven't been used for maybe 40 years(they're actually ww1 boots). I'm not sure there's any waxes in the leather. Just a lot of dust and really dry thick leather. Should I use renomat + mink oil?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
I woudl use the leather cleaning soap and mink oil or dubbin.
@monobgantonina5577
@monobgantonina5577 6 лет назад
The Hanger Project I'm afraid that in the initial stages of the cleaning (because the boots are so old) any water may damage the leather. Can I use the saphir soap without water?
@terminator9099
@terminator9099 7 лет назад
the renomat is so agressive that I dont even risk using the smallest drop, it can remove color so easily... I work at Edward Green and prefer the "saphir milk" (I dont know the exact name in english) and a good piece of cloth
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 7 лет назад
terminator9099 Thanks for your comment! In my experience, the Reno'Mat is aggressive but in no way unsafe. That said, it really isn't something that one needs to be using regularly. However, it is very effective at pulling off accumulated waxes, resins, and pigments. I've not seen it affect the finish of very cheap shoes that used water-based and not alcohol-based leather dyes. A pair of Edward Green shoes would ever be adversely affected by Reno'Mat. The leathern and dying processes are both top-notch.

Will the Dubbin work to condition and waterproof the sole of dress shoes as well as the Sole Guard? Is there a difference between drying times?
@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 6 лет назад
I'd avoid the Saphir Dubbin for sole conditioning because it contains waxes, which could leave a residue on carpets. I'd recommend either the Saphir Sole Guard or the Saphir Neats Foot OIl. Both are great sole conditioners.

@kirbyallison
@kirbyallison 7 лет назад
It is. Hinged shoe trees are most commonly found with bespoke shoes. They're difficult to carry/sell retail because you have to have them in every half size. Means you need a ton of shoe trees to support the line.

I notice that you don't treat your instep in the same way as the uppers. At school it was beaten in to me that one should shine the instep of your shoes as carefully as the uppers as this showed one was a gentleman. When you turned your shoes over to show the soles I noticed that your insteps appeared never to have received any care. George at Cleverley's would be horrified!
