hey, that was the reason why i loved the game. the whammy. if that show ever came back, i would play only for the whammy. fuck the money. i want the whammy.
What a fascinating show this was! Three hapless people drawn to a hypnotic, flashing monolith that promises them riches. If they displease it, they leave broke and humiliated. Still, the contestants keep coming, and we can’t stop watching!
Once in a blue moon there'd be a contestant I would want to win. I remember in the Australian version if you won 5 nights in a row you would win a car. Only two contestants ever won five games. A couple of others made it to the fifth and still lost. Barely anyone made it to the forth game. The first lady that won it was so nerve wracking watching her in the fifth game. It was the first time that I didn't want to see a whammy (not for her anyway. I did want the other contestants to get them so she would win.)
Imagine how much fun the crew that put the whammies together must have had. I've always wondered how many unaired whammies were created and whether any still exist in a vault somewhere.
My favorite one is "All I hear is 'Big bucks, big bucks.' I got your big buck!" I like how the Whammy in that case not only steals the contestant's money but also mocks them! There's also another one that wasn't shown in this video where the Whammy is bowling, and he says "I'm bowling for bucks, and it's a strike!" Then the bowling ball reappears behind the Whammy and he says "Uh-oh..." and the ball runs him over.
I watched Press Your Luck while I was growing up and I always laughed whenever the Whammy came up and they're different antics was freaking hilarious and it still is after all these years whether it's Whammy!The All New Press Your Luck or the new Press Your Luck where contestants have a chance at winning $1 million dollars.
Best thing about growing up in the 80s and staying home from school, was seeing contestants getting humiliated by the whammy. My mom used to get so frustrated with the contestants getting so greedy and ends up leaving with nothing. I loved the reboot it brought back memories of my childhood, now my children enjoys watching and says no whammies!!! lol.
And you wonder why the show lasted only three seasons -- it was utterly insulting to the audience when someone loses TENS of thousands of dollars over something stupid like that. The fact that this created champions several times with ZERO DOLLARS didn't help. In short, Peter Tomarken was great and the Whammies were fun to watch, but it was just too sadistic to enjoy overall. It was vindicated by cable, though. :)
@@coolnut99 That's idiotic. That's the thing that separated the show from all the other lamebrain game shows over the years. It's also the reason so many people identified with the show - because it inserted the key element of reality and negative outcomes - something that most people encounter at least occasionally in their daily lives. What I would suggest is insulting to the audience (particularly the audience's intelligence) is when EVERYONE goes home a winner.
Anthony Walker: Man, I used to love watchin' this ol' game show when I was little. My brother did the same thing when he was little, too, and I know my mom loved seeing that as well, and now, I can watch it anytime I want! 🧒
The surfing one's my face, because of how adorable he whammy sounds when he says,'It's a wipe ouuuuuuut!' Also, I tend to like the earlier show's animations, because they were more primitive, thus making them more cute to me. :)

after 20yrs+ this shit is still funny..... If im right wasnt this show in the 80s???? If so thats when the BEST shit was ever made (music some of it lol) Im proud to be born in the 80s.... They dont make shows like this anymore... Best tv show to come out of the 80s was MWC (married with children) Best game show PRESS UR LUCK....
Personally, my three favorite whammies were the "elimination" whammies (the whammies that would only play when a player got the fourth whammy; though this only happened in the second and third seasons) 1. The cruise boat whammy (which was shown twice here), the umpire whammy and the Barbershop quartet whammy...
I wonder if the contestants knew that all the kids who watched Press Your Luck were wishing they would hit a Whammy so the kids could have a quick laugh at the cartoon animations that denoted their misfortune.
This has always been, and always, will be "MY MOST FAVORITE GAME SHOW OF ALL TIME" Although it is sad 😢 that the original "PRESS YOUR LUCK" HOST "PETER TOMARKEN" is gone, Contrary to what contestants would say about the "WHAMMY": PETER will always be missed. "R.I.P PETER".
