"i never blamed you not once" makes alot more sense now. What if cloud accidentally killed Aerith in his kookiness and hallucinated everything after that to cope?
It does nothing because Cloud is fighting the Sephiroth whispers. The Sephiroth whispers are moving the sword and Cloud is forcing it to stay above his head as to not hurt her. Basically it just increases the tension although the intention is clearly for you not to press the buttons.
