=============================
In this video, we’re going to show you how to wire a few different transducers and transmitters to digital and analog PLC input modules.
We’re also going to analyze a typical instrument field-wiring drawing to show you how PLCs are properly configured for different transducer and transmitter types.
A transducer is a device that converts one form of energy to an electrical or electronic signal.
A Pressure switch is a two-part device consisting of a sensing transducer and an electrical switch.
A pressure switch is a digital device because it has only two possible conditions - open or closed. It is therefore connected to a PLC digital input module.
A Pressure Transmitter is a two-part device consisting of a sensing transducer and a circuit that transmits a standard instrumentation electrical signal representing a physical variable being measured. In most applications, the electrical signal is 4 to 20 mA.
A Pressure Transmitter is an analog device and is therefore connected to a PLC analog input module.
Many people refer to this device as a Transducer. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll continue to refer to it as a Transmitter.
A Pressure Transmitter requires a power supply to operate. Most Pressure Transmitters are two-wire types. Transmitters are also available as four-wire types.
As the name suggests, a two-wire pressure transmitter has only two wires. These two wires provide power for the transmitter and are also the signal lines!
A four-wire transmitter has two wires connected to a power supply and two signal wires connected to the PLC. The power supply can be AC or DC depending on the vendor and model.
1) Digital input - 1756-IF8
We will wire a Gems PS41 series pressure switch to Input 3 of a ControlLogix 1756-IB32 digital input module.
The 1756-IB32 module is capable of supporting up to 32 digital input devices. Each additional device would be wired the same as the Gems pressure switch.
2) Analog input - Single-ended and differential
The analog module can be wired in two possible modes: Single-ended or Differential.
The selection is important as it determines how the module is physically wired.
In Single-Ended mode, we can connect 8 two-wire transmitters sharing one power supply. Each transmitter connection is referred to as a Channel.
2) Analog input - 1756-IF8
The 1756-IF8 module is configured for current input during programming in the I/O configuration.
We will connect the Wika E-11 two-wire transmitter to Channel 5 of a ControlLogix 1756-IF8 analog module.
Details on how to wire more transmitters can be found on the Rockwell Automation website: bit.ly/1756IO
2) Analog input - 1756-IF8 - an industry example
Field wiring diagrams vary between companies. In our example, two channels of the 1756-IF8 are wired in Single-Ended Mode.
We’ll look at how Pressure Transmitter ZT-P3606 is connected to Channel 0, and ZT-P3610 is connected to Channel 1. Both transmitters share the same +24V DC Power Supply.

@orangemonkeykiller

I'm no expert, but if you're looking to connect the analogue output from your VFD to the PLC, then the principles of this video still apply. You would connect it as a 4 wire device, as the VFD has its own supply. Just make sure the VFD output is configured correctly for the PLC input, as they can often both do 0-10v and 4-20mA

Dear Proff. Thank you so much for your great video, yet I've a short question please; you said, in wiring the first transmitter wiring, we will connect the load/signal wire to channel 5 but in the animation the black wire was connected to channel 14, please clarify to us. I do highly appreciate your effort and time in preparing such informative and detailed videos

Hi @Malik Arthur. Thanks for your question. We've got a full pinout view of the 1756-IF8 module at 4:39 of the video. If we configure this module for single-ended, it can accommodate up to 8 input channels. These 8 input channels are labelled IN-0 to IN-7. Each corresponding input terminal number is marked beside the label. For example, terminal 14 is the input terminal for Channel 5, or IN-5. Allen Bradley/Rockwell provides an amazing amount of information and details about their hardware for free on the internet. If you want to know more about this module, just perform a web search for "1756-IF8". Please reach out anytime.

Hi! Great video and it explains a lot, thank you. I read the AB manual for the 1756-IF8 card and I'm still learning how to wire these cards. I paused the video at 5:11 to observe the wiring diagram and noticed that RTN, terminal 9 and RTN, terminal 10 are jumpered. Could you use a jumper bar and connect terminals 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and jump a wire from any terminal that is jumped to RTN on terminal 10? I'm just trying to cut down on individual wire jumpers. Also, one of the flow transmitters I will be using has a 24V DC supply already. for the analog signal. The flow sensor connects directly to the flow transmitter which will give me the 4-20mA signal. Would the (+) connect directly to IN-0 and the (-) directly to i RTN-0. It shows in the manual the wiring for an external power source like in the video at 5:33. The transmitter unit is supplying the 24V DC. I hope I explained that correclty. I'm just trying to get some information on how to wire it correctly. Thanks!

Hi @kilowatts Thanks for your question. First of all, you can connect terminals as you suggest above if all of your transmitters are 2 wire-types connected as single-ended. The 2nd transmitter you mention sounds like a 4-wire type with 2 wires out for 4-20mA. This type of transmitter requires that the module is wired and configured as Differential. Unfortunately, you can't mix single-ended 2-wire and 4-wire transmitters on the same module. One requires RSLogic configuration as single-ended, the other as differential. I'm not sure what AB manual you are looking at, but look at the wiring sections for each configuration, and you'll see what I mean. Unfortunately, the hardware manual does not discuss software configurations, but you will be asked in RSLogic 5000 what configuration you require. If I'm not clear, please don't hesitate to reply.

@ 3:11 Please what does it mean when a device is voltage-dependent?
@realpars
@realpars 2 года назад
Hello Bitebo Numbere. A voltage-dependent device is one that must have the power supply connected to the correct terminals. In other words, the + side of the power supply must connect to the + terminal of the voltage-dependent device or it will not operate.

what is the difference between the single-ended and the differential?
@realpars
@realpars Год назад
Hi @Mohammed Saad. Thanks for reaching out. Refer to the AB module specs as mentioned in the video at 6:04. Basically, single-ended connected transmitters share a common while differential input connected transmitters do not share a common.

Transmitter output 4-20ma, PLC module input is 0-20ma, how do you paired signal?
@realpars
@realpars 2 года назад
Hello @guwei zhao. When you configure an Analog Input module in the PLC program, you will be given the opportunity to scale the input signal to whatever engineering units you want. In this case, you could set the low signal and low engineering value to 4 mA. You would then set the high signal and high engineering value to 20 mA. I hope that answers your question. Please don't hesitate to reply, or ask further questions.

Did we forget to mention half of the sensor market that measures in 0-10v in 2 and 3 wire configurations?
@realpars
@realpars 2 месяца назад
Hello Joe. Hey....thanks for reaching out. You are correct. Many pressure transmitters produce a 0 to 10V output range representing a 0 to 100% input pressure range. Many transmitters are very flexible. For example, the Wika Model 0-10 can be configured for 0 - 10v, 1- 5V, 4 -20ma, and more possibilities! Seems like you've come across a few yourself. Happy measuring!
