Thanks for the great real time update! We could learn and save a lot from your practicality, it never ceases to amaze me how much the world can learn from full time live-aboard sailors. Thank you for sharing! If you are a Pats fan, I'm sure today is a happy day for you as well. Cheers!
Your videos are so amazing I don't mind waiting. We are vegan so an episode about canning fish is not something we care to watch but stayed long enough to hear your comment about Ben. You guys ROCK! See you next week!
I made your Salmon Stew last night, and really liked it. It was a hit with the whole family. Promptly printed out the recipe and put it in the family cookbook. Thanks again!
That's brilliant Jeff, so glad to hear you guys enjoyed the stew! I'm always amazed at how tasty this recipe is, yet so simple...everyone thinks we spent ages in the galley when we serve this. We're honoured to be included in the family cookbook! Bon appétit - Monique
As far as the farming of salt water fish....well they are getting better. However the approach England has taken to bringing life back to her rivers and streams has had success.
Dang....nice culinary skills, my friend. I must admit, this video made me hungry...and I don't eat meat anymore...well, okay, sometimes I fall off that wagon. lol.
Wonderful to hear that you're enjoying our videos! :) We now have 300 cans of chicken, steak, ground beef, pork, and fish. Most of it was purchased on sale. We're really hoping to spend a part of this summer catching cod and mackerel in Scotland and Faroe and canning it. Welcome to our channel. - Drake
DrakeParagon I am definitely going to invest in a pressure cooker and cans I mean jars lol I can not wait for more videos in the meantime I will be catching up on all your previous videos
A cooking channel married to a sailing channel. A match made in heaven! I dothink there can be too much garlic, though. It comes out of your pores! We're very excited to see your adventures in Norway. Hoping to do the same. Great videos
Great the salmon Chowder recipe ! I can get canned salmon very cheap here so that is what I will use thanks for the recipe . Great cooking video !! THUMBS UP !!!
Drake, FYI in case you are an organic food aficionado ...farmed salmon is regularly hosed down with antibiotics, pesticide and fungicides. The hot water pretreat for the lids is pointless since the seals are heated far hotter and longer in the pressure cooker cycle. Also, the sealing event does not happen when you first place the lid and ring on the jar so, any softening of the seal by pretreating is not utilized at all. If you do screw the ring down tight enough to utilize the presoftened seal, you goofed up.
Ok, I'm going to make some of your chowder. I've got wild salmon caught on Lake Ontario last summer. Update: It was delicious. Drake, can you list your recipes?
@14:25 I use a 4QT presto pressure cooker. Love it. But I put the regulator on when I close the lid and start the timer when the lock pops up indicating that cooker is pressurized. Thanks for showing us how to can. I'll have to see if canning jars will fit in my pressure cooker and try this, one to three jars at a time. Great tutorial - thanks !
Thanks, Yes, the lids are supposed to be used only once. Though there are people who are carefully reusing them with success. I think you can buy extra lids for as little as 20 cents each (or less) in the US. - Drake
it's a good idea to sterilize the jars after washing them, my mother boils the empty jars to sterilize but you can do it cold with a chemical like idophor. botulism is a very bad thing and can grow in a totally sealed jar of food..
Great video as usual guys. Love the process, never tried it but sure sounds a great idea for long distance cruising especially when it can get expensive. Can you use an ordinary pressure cooker or is the one you have different? Guess normal pressure cookers don’t have a gauge so that doesn’t help. Love it when Mo wants more potatoes.... cheers. Hello "the boat" Don't know if you read, written to older movies? But still write. My foundation is. Is this the only model on cans that "you" use? Or, the only one available to that conservation parlor? Thinking .... To avoid buying new caps, for "next" preservation ... Shouldn't it be better to use the model of cans that have glass caps and loose rubber ring / seal? (flat, not o-ring type). Available in different models. The really old one with loose glass lid and loose metal bracket that holds the lid in place (before cooking). The newer models where the lid is attached with metal wire around the can, and also bent to form hinges to the lid. Also included is locking to the lid. All in one unit, no loose parts ... Was it poorly explained, please ask. Sincerely
Farmed fish is lacking the same nutrients as wild caught fish....especially salmon. Have you seen the other channels who've canned fish and other meats? Lots out there. Can't wait to see you guys sailing again.
Thank you Kyle! We now have over 1500 hours of footage from our previous voyaging throughout Greenland, Iceland, Faroe, Scotland, Ireland, Norway and Svalbard. It was an enormous undertaking to accumulate that much footage, and we think we have the most wonderful and fantastic story to tell. Every winter we devote ourselves to editing that footage into weekly episodes that tell the story of our cruising life, in chronological order. Our patrons are making it possible for us to tell this story, and as our way of saying thank you we have some perks, including special "real time" videos. We generally don't make these real time videos available to the general public so that we don't interrupt the chronological order of telling our story on our public youtube page. - Drake
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your journey. I bought my first boat last fall. Watching your videos is a nice way to pass some of my landlocked Canadian winter as I wait for spring and my maiden of my little old boat. My sailing journey is just getting started. I have never been on patreon but I think I may join you guys there. I really enjoy the content you guys put online.
I dont know, that " Real Cruising Life " looks kinda tough. lol Just like normal life, good things in between dealing with problems, just better scenery. And I'd bet you could have a cushier life on land, but trade off is worth it!!!
I made custom coverings for them out of Reflectix (aluminum foil bubble wrap insulation) and scotch tape. Then stacked all of the cans in a huge box shaped locker that never gets any condensation in it. We're looking forward to catching mackerel and canning it this summer in Faroe. - Drake
DrakeParagon great idea. Thank you. A “cool” place for storage can be a challenge in the tropics. No issue where you are !! Great vids. Love receiving the notice when a new one arrives.
Each yellow Pelican case has a different type of rechargeable video equipment battery. The battery chargers for them are all in the passageway just aft of that. :) - Drake
Hej där! If you have a mount of salmon or lax as we say look at Wikipedia on burryd or gravad lax, it is not a bad joke, it is reely an delicacy with hovmästare sause and toast bread or with boiled potatos it is wery good. The history of the dish you got on wiki to and it is in english! You are reely inventive in your food storing and now I can understand that you not are intresting in fishing every day.....finns and geals could start growing..hö, hö Fare Winds BarbroSweden
I think it'a common to add salt and other flavor ingredients, but I've never added anything. I've canned chicken, pork, steak, ground beef, and salmon and I've never added anything else to the jar. - Drake
The last time I saw your cat was when you were in New York taking a girl to the Bermuda I didn't know you had your cat all this time unless that's a different cat
I wish that was my cat. The cat in this video lives in Faroe and would come by to visit us almost every day. I lost my Aebi in the Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. Here's a little video I made about her. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f--B_iCjnAs.html - Drake
Great video, I love these people and what they are doing and yes, I'd probably eat some if offered, but you are correct about farmed salmon (read about it). Drake knows I am sure but appreciates the gift without question....this shit is great!
