The warning on the plug is that after you finish filling up to that 10ft, you have about 5 psi in the pipe. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it can be enough to give you a good pop if you're looking right over it and it fails. You guys did a good job!
You're right, when we went to drain the system it was quite a geyser for a couple seconds! Head pressure is very deceiving, I can't imagine what it would be like if a skyscraper drain line clogged up..
I actually had the same thought and capped it off the 2nd time and it still happened! Never did find any observable leak, thinking it was just air settling somehow
