It is interesting that Toscanini had a far more elevated view of Furtwangler than does Hurwitz.

Guess what, there's a direct line from the Toscanini NBC broadcasts and the fetish of objectivity to John Cage's 4' 33''. For better or worse.

So, according to Hurwitz, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven were "nationalists"? If no, then why were they different? I.E. they were nationalists? The problem with Hurwitz is that his notions about music are strewn with cheap cognitive dissonances, quite apart from poor taste.
