This is probably one of the best kits I have seen in my opinion, even without the cool vintage factor. I really wish they would make some stainless steel reproductions of this model. I think I would prefer the full canteen model though as I can store rations in other spots and would prefer more water capacity.
It's interesting that the handle folds into the vessel rather than under it. A cool piece of history, definitely not something I see often. Maybe something to get made in stainless steel as a modern updated version? The fact that you can use it in the "oven" configuration makes it pretty unique. I'd love to see a video of you cooking in it the way! Take care Dan.
I saw a kit like that at a local antique/variety mall, I wanted it, but the vendor was asking way too much for my budget, one of my regrets in life, love your channel you have great videos!
That's an outstanding mess kit. It just made the list of items to find. Was the canteen itself aluminum or a different metal? I don't think they used much aluminum back then, but you never know. As the canteen can also be a cooking vessel for heating soups or coffee. I know that in the army they eventually went to plastic canteens. Not so much because it was cheaper as they claim, but soldiers couldn't use them to make stills with. IMA (International Military Antiques) is currently sold out by the way. Ebay might be the best bet for one. Typically an issued one sells for over 300.00 USD. You got a nice score.
Great design. Is it steel? (I like steel. Strong, hygienic etc) With modern manufacturing and materials it could be reproduced, even improved. Is it just me or is this better than many modern alternatives?
Jeremy Doss - Probably cost prohibitive due to the engineering that seems to be involved. Made out of SS, I'm guessing you're looking at $100 - $125 today. Not many people will pay that for a modern mess kit.
No I don’t use it all that much. I’m all about using all the gear I buy but this was so hard to find and is over 100 years old I have a hard time beating it up
