Love Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders. Chrissie has one of the best female rock voices. They have so many great tunes - "My City Was Gone", "Back on the Chain Gang". "Thin Line Between Love and Hate", "I'll Stand By You" etc. etc. Thanks so much guys for reacting to this one!🧡
The Sex Pistols were literally a joke. the Police taught them the few chords they played on their debut. Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders were the real thing.
Add “Tattooed Love Boys”, “The Wait”, “Private Life”, “Mystery Achievement”, “Don’t Get Me Wrong”, and (one of their lesser known songs)”Revolution”, among others.
When punk was starting out, Chrissie went to England to form a band, and they became the Pretenders. One interesting thing I remember her saying, was that all of the punk bands that she knew in London -- and she knew them ALL -- everyone had both copies of the two albums by the New York Dolls. One hell of an endorsement.
The Pretenders are great. Powerhouse rockers! I hope you will give the band Heart a listen. They started rocking in the 70's. They're an excellent band. Start with the first album, Dreamboat Annie, and continue on from there. Love your channel.
50’s group The Platter’s is who you were thinking of. Song was, The Great Pretender. One find lady, dripping with attitude and talent. That was her on harmonica. Try “My City Was Gone.” I’m sure you may have heard the intro used for yrs by radio jackass, Rush Limbeau (sp?) She was not a fan. Nice catalog here with great live performances as well. Started with other groups briefly in the 70’s before recording as the Pretenders late 70’s.
The place to start with The Pretenders is their first album -- when they were still rooted in punk but could dial it down to some great guitar jangle pop too. First their punkish side check out "Precious" or "Tattooed Love Boys". For the jangle pop side check out "Brass in Pocket" or "Kid".
Yeah this number got played to the ground. It is a good tune. Brass in Pocket was always the song I identify as Chrissy's best work. It's a shame she sold her copyright to Limbaugh it really killed her potential.
I'll tell you a relative new female artist who absolutely blew me away. Loved her first album (Bomb Through The Breeze). Her second album is coming out soon. Hannah Wicklund and The Steppping Stones. She sings, plays lead guitar and writes their music. Songs Bomb Through The Breeze (title track), Looking Glass, Ghost, Shadowboxes and Porcelain Faces are all well worth a listen. A great blues/classic rock sound.
There are so many great pretenders songs, brass in pocket, message of love,my city was gone, back on the chain gang...........the list goes on and on ✌️
One of the best GIRL Bands ever is HEART. Ann + Nancy Wilson Kill it. These songs rock harder than boy-bands. Try "Sing-Child", "White Lightning + Wine". These two songs will get you on the HOOK...!
I always liked the lyrics to this kick ass song. Break them down, they're excellent and relatable. Chrissie is one of Akron, Ohio's greatest musical exports. Heart is a great female led band. Ann Wilson is one of the best female singers of her era and beyond. Powerful voice. When Led Zepp was awarded Presidential honors Ann sang Stairway To Heaven. Page, Plant and JPJ watched and you could tell they loved it. Very special. Heart have many great songs. Live her voice is just as powerful as in the studio. Great stuff guys as usual...
Great band, Chrissie is great unique singer and writer. Lots of hits, super deep cuts too. Check out her autobiography, really cool full of interesting personal history (Kent State, Lemmy, Malcolm Mclaren's Sex Boutique & the Sex Pistols, ...). She's been there, done that a lot.
Saw the Pretenders live twice in the 1980's, and they kicked complete butt, live. Best band at Live Aid in Philly in 1985....I know because I was there. Try: Mystery Achievement from them. Ty!
Hynde plays the harmonica in concert. This is a song about remaining steadfast yet sometimes mixing it up and slapping some heads in the world a bit if need be. Great, straight rock-n-roll.
Female vocalists.. Carly Simon- The Way I Always Heard it Should Be...Rikki Lee Jones- Weasel in a White Boys Wool...Carol King- It's Too Late..Peggy Lee-Blues in a Night..Tracy Chapman-Fast Car...Joni Mitchell-You Turn Me On(I'm a Radio)..Sarah McLaughlin- Building a Mystery...No Doubt- I'm Just a Girl...Janis Joplin- Turtle Blues..and Sabine and Marianne singing the Flower Duet from "Lakme"...you already know about Clare Tory..Romeo Void- Never Say Never.
One of my favorite bands! Message of love, Chain Gang, Precious, Tattooed Love Boys, Mystery Achievement, My City was gone, so many more. I’d start with their debut album, it’s a banger with all the original members. Chrissy’s voice is fantastic! Thanks for hitting this!
Saw Pretenders live on the tour supporting this album. Terrific show. Super tight, energetic '80's rock. Couldn't take our eyes off lead singer Chrissie Hynde--tremendous stage presence.
This band needs more reactor love. They are amazing. You want more females, Tori Amos- Winter, live. The Bangles- Hazy Shade of Winter, official video. Blondie- Detroit 442, official video and definitely more Pretenders.
Female vocalists. Tracy Chapman, Fast Car Samantha Fish Bulletproof Pretty Reckless's Tracy Momsen Death by Rock n Roll Nightwish had several female leads, poet and the Pendulum 4 non blondes, Whats up Concrete blondes, Joey Hearts Ann Wilson, Barricuda Eurythmics Annie Lenox Sweet Dreams, or ANY of her solo Christmas music. Interesting one could be Dolly Parton who now has songs from the 60s 70s 80s and just released a new one this year. Can see how her music changed to stay relevant and how her voice has kept up/worn down from her 20s to now 77 years old.
I grew up less than an hours drive from where this band is from. Akron, OH. The political statement this song made is still relevant 40 years later. And I still listen to this band regularly as a proud Buckeye.
Post-punk New Wave pop-rock with a biker flavour. You might like their first album 'The Pretenders'. I'd be surprised if you haven't heard any of their singles. As for more female artists, there are so many: The Slits [seminal punk], 'The B52's' [first two albums and watch their videos], Patti Smith [proto-punk], Eve Libertine of Crass [essential punk], very many in New Wave bands, and a lot in Alt. Americana, including 'The Be Good Tanyas', to name a few essential ones in three of the genres more inhabitated by females.
The Pretenders are great. Their debut album ranks among the best debut albums ever. Start with songs from that for best results. Try "The Wait" or "Mystery Achievement" or "Tattooed Love Boys".
Chrissie came on the scene, played as good as the fellows and is still rocking today. I love My City Was Gone and several others. But my favorite is Im Special ( Brass in Pocket) It came out when my daughter was a baby. I always sang it to her.. "Im Special, so Special. Gotta have some of your attention. Give it to me"🎶🎵🎶 Love her voice!!!
Appreciate you guys hitting up a new genre. Pretenders are post punk/new wave band that got tons of radio play in the 80s and 90s. Don't know much outside their hits, but most of the songs I know are pretty good. If you guys do more New wave. Billy Idol, The Cars, INXS, and Missing Persons are some bands to check out.
Brass in Pocket was my favorite Pretenders song. Chrissy was a good stage performer. Good band. Here's a link to Sarah Jarosz I mentioned in your previous video. Her second song is a good sample, but I think the opener and what she's saying in between is pretty cool: ru-vid.comi3Z0skP0EeE?feature=share
Chrissie Hynde also writes most of the band’s songs, along with other people. You should check out their first album, in particular (though I love a lot if their other stuff as well). It’s one if the greatest debut albums ever, in my opinion.
"In the middle of the road you see the darndest things Like fat guys driving 'round in jeeps through the city Wearing big diamond rings and silk suits Past corrugated tin shacks full up with kids And man, I don't mean a Hampstead nursery But when you own a big chunk of the bloody Third World The babies just come with the scenery"
here’s a few of my favorite female artists: COCTEAU TWINS -PERSEPHONE…. the dark siren voice of Elizabeth Fraisier. PJ HARVEY-DRESS…. preferably the live vid. she’s diverse, aggressive and sexy all at once finally.. TORI AMOS -GOD no explanation needed. brilliance
You could just do this album song by song. Such a great lp. The Great Pretender was a 50’s classic bet you were thinking of that one. For female singers Tanya Donelly was a popular indie artist. Her song The Bright Lights would make a good song to react to.
If you Guys want to hear Female voices, please give yourselves a treat and check out 'Fanny ' ,the Original all Girl American band from the early 70s, they were so good!!!... X
Female request - Orianthi - Highly Strung ft. Steve Val - 2 guitar greats. and highly strung does describe this high energy song. Other Orianthi songs - According to You - and - Now or Never The 1st one has no words just great guitar in tandem. The last 2 she sings. She also covers some of the guitar greats.
Love the channel, you guys are the best! Give me a favor and do the entire first album by the pretenders. Every song is excellent, although there is one dated song, called space invaders :-)
Chrissy Hydne has one of those voices that makes me want to cry, like Karen Carpenter but completely different. “Back on the Chain Gang” and her rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” both rip my heart out.
