The Pretenders perform Space Invader live at the Riviera Theater, Chicago on September 8th 1980.For more live shows please visit our website www.pretenders...
The original line up was one of the best bands of their time, I was lucky enough to see them back in 1979/1980 when they were touring in support of the second album, simply a great band playing great songs off the first two albums. I didn't realize it at the time but it really was a wonderful time in the music scene...................
Also was lucky enough to see Pretenders in their early days with original line up around 1980. Honeyman-Scott was incredible. Saw them at great club in Albany, NY-it was JB Scotts and held around 800 and we pushed our way to front. JB Scotts had most of the best punk/new wave bands like Ramones, B-52's, David Johansen, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers and more but Pretenders were incredible.
I saw them open for the Who in spring of 1980. Unfortunately, the Pretenders's sound mix was awful. It sounded like they were playing through a wall of mud.
I saw The Pretenders in late 1981. During the opening act I went to the lobby for a cigarette and saw Martin Chambers playing Space Invaders in the corner. Had to laugh about that.
I don't know if I'd go THAT far. He was good and some of his work was outstanding (the Kid lead for example). I"m not sure he had enough material to give him a top 10 spot though.
This has been my pandemic song. Was watching Sopranos at start at end of March and I keep playing this song and watching this video. For the start of the Financial Crisis in 2008 it was Paper Planes by MIA. Some songs have a sound, that being the shape of a form....
Great stuff! Groovy as hell!!! Such a shame that more of these bands did not record their live performances. Most of them forbade audience recording too.
The video and the song are totally different. As you can see, Chrissie is singing in the video. There aren't any vocals on Space Invader. So there. Really nice live version though.
Saw them 4 times in Cleveland in 80-81 they were staying at swingos keg & quarter fardon & Jimmy h. Scott came down to lounge sat in booth with them bought them couple of beers and b.s.ed awhile I remember they both seemed bummed out lonely for home probably
What a GREAT memory to have experienced. I always wondered if those two would be considered "Tortured Artist." B/C as great of a musicians they were, there were also the demons they were fighting. I'm not trying to label anyone. Just responding to your thoughts about them "seemed bummed out lonely for home probably" as potential signs of a deeper depression. (Just sayin') RIP James H-S and Pete F. very...sad
who plays an instrumental on a teenage dance show in 1980...just awesome to see them play the most unique guitar playing, bass figures, vocals and power in drumming.
@@arlingtonhynes Hi the audio part is from the Riviera Theatre, the video is The Wait from a UK programme called All Right Now broadcast 7th Dec 1980, I just chopped and put back together so it made it look like they were playing Space Invaders.
Um, yeah, so that's not the Riviera. It's too small and there have never been dance platforms. And, as much as I hate to admit it, most of us new-wave kids in Chicago didn't dress that hip ! Dressing like that in that neighborhood would've guaranteed severe hassles. My bet is it's from a British or European tv show. It is a great little piece of live music.

Yea, I agree 100%, that is not the Riv, and you can clearly see a club's name around the 2:10 mark. Plus the playing is not in sync with the song at all.
Killer song, killer band......but really?? live??? they could be playing, "here comes johnny with his pecker in his hand he's a one ball man and he's off to the rodeo...eehaww", but they sure as hell aint playing the tune advertised. Oh you good, you good...almosta fool me!! You good you good....Pffffttt....
The early Eighties were so great for music. In fact, looking back at it now it was a Golden Age of Rock. Don’t believe me? You had the Pretenders, the Cure, the Cult, U2, English Beat, the Selector, the Specials, Blondie, The Ramones, the Cars, Talking Heads and REM! And Gary Numan, PIL, A Flock of Seagulls, the Fixx, OMD, New Order, Duran Duran, Prince, Madonna and MJ. Is that an embarrassment of Riches or what? The Eighties Ruled! 👏🏻🎸😎
@@dynjarren8355 You'd be about the first person I ever saw on a message board who claims to like punk but doesn't like The Clash. Doubt you were listening to punk rock in the 1970's
Early Pretenders shows were littered with' prepubescent teens! How is that possible for such hard lyrics and hard licks? My peers were a bit more street sensed and mature.
My thoughts as well. MY conclusion is that they didn't want to betray her age B/C it's so, not cool. A matter of respect. I may be way off base but that's what I've thought in the 49+ times I've played and replayed this vid.

It's definately not totp! Also I wouldn't doubt the uploader on this issue! The croud do kinda look english but people followed the band from everywhere once they were established. Anyhow, peace :)

This band was incredible!!! I was fortunate enough to be able to see them before Pete Farnham was fired and died from an overdose and James honey man Scott died from an overdose a couple weeks later!!!
Pete got kicked out of the band in June of 1982 due to his drug abuse and a few days after he got kicked out; JHS died from a cocaine drug overdose. Pete died about a year later in April 1983 from a speedball mix of cocaine and heroin; same thing that killed John Belushi. That was popular in the early 1980's after free basing ran it's course. Yeah I did some drugs too
