I was born in The Kings rd Chelsea in December 1961, and all through the 60’s and early 70’s John Povey was constantly a guest of the parents of my friends who lived around the Kings rd. I remember one summer in about 1968/9 we went and stayed in a bungalow in the sand dunes of Ilfracombe in Devon and John came along with us and became a sort of crazy babysitter for all of us. I remember he used to let us all climb on the roof rack of the Ford Cortina we traveled down in and would drive like a maniac around the sand dunes with a bunch of us 8 or nine year olds hanging on for dear life whilst he had music blaring from the radio and we absolutely loved every second of it. My only memory of John Povey was what a lovely man he was, super fun and lovely geezer.

A great musician and beautiful human being has left us. Rest in Peace Jon! I met him many times over the years and I treasure the good memories. Jon and Wally joined The Pretty Things in April 1967,after John Stax left the short lived 4 piece band ( Phil May, Dick Taylor, Skip Alan, John Stax), which gave their last concert March 27th, 1967 at the famous Casino concert hall in Scheveningen, The Netherlands.

Its hard to say enough without saying too much. The Pretty Things are a f’king revelation to me, some of the BEST music Ive ever heard. I actually feel f’king cheated by record companies, radio stations/broadcasters, film & television production companies for keeping the knowledge of their existence from me. Instead I wasted countless hours listening to excrement that belonged in a toilet. With all the passion I can muster, I recommend Greatest Hits, S.F. Sorrow, the second side of Parachute. Go listen to ‘Grass’, ‘Walking in My Dreams’ & your reaction should be “What the f*’k”….
