We preview the upcoming Grand Prix Final in Beijing, China, December 7-10, 2023. We breakdown the action in the hotly contested Men’s competition, the uncertainty in the Women’s division, the fight for silver and bronze in the Pairs, and why the Ice Dance competition is such a wild card.
After six Grand Prix qualifiers that included dozens of thrilling performances (as well as a fair amount of messiness), we’re finally ready for the Grand Prix Final for 2023!
To say this competition is stacked would be an understatement - especially when looking at the Men’s and Dance competitions. In this episode, we break down each discipline, pick each of our favorites for the podium, and even throw out a few “we wish they made it” honorable mentions.
Men’s Competition
Adam Siao Him Fa (FRA) - 30 pts / Gold at Grand Prix de France and Cup of Chine
Ilia Malinin (USA) - 28 pts / Gold at Skate America and Silver at Grand Prix de France
Kao Miura (JPN) - 28 pts / Silver at Skate Canada and Gold at Espoo
Yuma Kagiama (JPN) - 26 pts / Bronze at Grand Prix de France and Gold at NHK Trophy
Shoma Uno (JPN) - 26 pts / Silver at both Cup of China and Grand Prix de France
Kevin Aymoz (FRA) - 24 pts / Silver at Skate America and Bronze at Espoo
It’s not an overstatement to say that this has the potential to be the best men’s competition we’ve seen since the Beijing Olympics. The six men who qualified have all laid down stellar performances this season - each one showing growth when compared to previous seasons.
Pairs Competition
Deanna Stellato Dudek and Maxime Dechamps (CAN) - 30 pts / Gold at Skate Canada and Cup of China
Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodi (GER)- 30 pts / Gold at Espoo and NHK Trophy
Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud (CAN) - 28 pts / Silver at Skate America and Gold at Grand Prix de France
Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii (ITA) - 26 pts / Silver at both Grand Prix de France and Espoo
Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini (ITA) - 24 pts / Silver at Cup of China and Bronze at NHK Trophy
Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko* (HUN) - 24 pts / Silver at Skate Canada and Bronze at Bronze at Espoo
*Replaced Hocke and Kunkel, who withdrew due to injury
Of all of the disciplines, the pairs has the most clear-cut favorite. Canada’s brilliant Deanna Stellato Dudek & Maxime Dechamps have come out swinging this season and given fans a team to be genuinely excited about. They are certainly not a lock to win, but the odds are definitely in their favor.
Women’s Competition
Kaori Sakamoto (JPN) - 30 pts / Gold and both Skate Canada and Espoo
Isabeau Levito (USA) - 28 pts / Silver at Skate America and Gold at Grand Prix de France
Loena Hendrickx (BEL) - 26 pts / Gold at Skate America, Bronze at Cup of China
Hana Yoshida (JPN) - 24 pts / 4th at Skate America, Gold at Cup of China
Nina Pinzarrone (BEL) - 24pts / Silver at Grand Prix de France and Bronze at NHK Trophy
Rion Sumiyoshi (JPN) - 24 pts / Bronze at Grand Prix de France and Silver at Espoo
Will this be the formal Grand Prix coronation of Queen Kaori? Only time will tell. Last year, Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto went in as the favorite, but faltered. This year, we’ve seen a much more consistent and focused Kaori - which may give her the edge here.
Ice Dance Competition
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier (CAN) - 30 pts / Gold at Skate Canada and Cup of China
Madison Chock and Evan Bates (USA) - 30 pts / Gold at Skate America and Espoo
Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri (ITA) - 28 pts / Gold at Grand Prix de France and Silver at NHK Trophy
Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson (GBR) - 28 pts / Silver at Skate Canada and Gold at NHK Trophy
Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sorensen (CAN) - 26 pts / Silver at both Grand Prix de France and Espoo
Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha (CAN) - 26 pts / Silver at both Skate America and Cup of China
The Dance competition is usually the most likely to be predictable, but after Fear & Gibson’s upset at NHK Trophy, everything seems a little more up in the air.
All in all, this competition looks to be a doozy - we can’t wait to see what happens!

I just found you, and I am catching up on all your videos. I do not want to be negative here, but I just cannot listen to the other guys (purposely being vague) anymore. Your channel is solely focused on the skaters, without the shtick, catty gossip and ridiculousness of the previous podcasters I put up with for far too long. With that said, I would love to hear a little bit about both of you, and especially your background(s). I say this only because you are both so incredibly professional, and it sounds like you both have some sort of experience in broadcasting. You both play off each other so well, and I am enjoying your podcasts immensely! I just have to say that I am so happy to find a channel that puts the spotlight solely ON the skaters. They work so hard, and it is nice to listen to podcasters who focus on them (the skaters) ONLY. This feels like an early Christmas present, and to be frank, it is the best present I have ever received. Thank you both so very much. This is my new-favorite RU-vid channel by far!

Wow, thank you so much for the kind words! We really want this show to be a celebration of the sport and the skaters. We don’t have much interest in gossip or drama, either. We want to promote and grow the fan base for skating, not tear it down! Re: background - We’ve been podcasters for a long time, just in other subject matter. For years we co-hosted a show called Nerd For A Living about careers in pop culture entertainment. (That one’s been dormant for a long time.) In addition to Scoreography, Adron hosts a podcast called @Fictitious (that’s here on RU-vid) about writing Sci-Fi and Fantasy. You guessed, right, too: he worked in radio broadcasting for 11 years!

Same. For me, this channel is akin to the Flutzes and Waxels podcast I used to listen to, but which is currently on hiatus, unfortunately. I'm enjoying the discussion and the professional presentation.

Just found your podcast, and will definitely be listening to your other episodes. I really like how you discuss all the skaters. Just a small correction to the pronunciation of Espoo, the oo is not pronounced like oo in poo but just like the o in Shoma or Kaori for example but just stretch it out to be longer as it’s two O’s.

That's very helpful, thank you! (I really need to start keeping a proper pronunciation guide. Managing all the international names and locations gets tricky... - Adron)

Isn't Shoma also an Olympic Silver medalist 2018?
@scoreography

You're right, he won silver in 2018. We were only thinking of 2022 Olympic results, in that "Reigning (color)-Medalist" way. But you are technically correct-the best kind of correct!

At Cup of China, I heard Leona was sick beforehand. Therefore she couldn't train to her full extent before the competition. Hopefully she will be well rested and healthy before the Grand Prix Final.

Battling illness while competing has got to be brutal! That would certainly explain her sluggish performance at that event. Hopefully we get Loena at her full power this weekend!

let's assume (and keep fingers crossed) it's a clean men's competition... technically clean + "good" pcs: ilia wins on base value with +goe. two quads in the bonus (both in combination), plus the lutz/axel sequence... think chen v hanyu 2019 vibes. if fear/gibson podium here... i would almost be willing to finance papadakis/cizeron's return just to save the ice dance ship from completely sinking! 😆

We think you're totally right on Ilia. He's very difficult to beat when he's clean-and in a pinch we know he can throw surprise moves, like that triple-triple-triple combo that saved him at last year's US Nationals. Your Gabby & Guillaume comment made us actually LOL. We were *just* talking about whether or not they'd return before the Olympics (and we think chances are high). We love Fear & Gibson, but can never quite settle on how we feel about the Rocky routine. It's a definite crowd-pleaser, but if they medal with it at GPF, a lot of ice dance fans are going to be in therapy afterwards...

As much as I don't like p/c I would support their come back just to keep f/g from podium. LOL

Hold up hold up: You are looking at GPF as in short term. Long term, its beyond important for skaters to pace himself. Ilia is best not adding all the quads so early. Those landing impacts are huge and if you can minimalize them for a few months before worlds, you increase your shot at being stronger by olympics, a marathon away
@scoreography
@scoreography 9 месяцев назад
That’s a solid assessment, and Ilia has also been working hard to prove he’s more than just a jumper or the Quad Axel Guy.
