I remember my grandmother telling me how as a child she watched terrified as a Zeppelin come down in flames over the East end of London. In the UK, we call them airships, but I think originally they were called dirigibles.

A blimp is nothing more than a powered balloon, a Zeppelin has a rigid internal frame to which the gas bags are attached, followed by a covering of the frame to make it more aerodynamic
@dakel20
@dakel20 2 года назад
Adding on to this, a dirigible has a semi rigid internal frame.
@Mishn0
@Mishn0 2 года назад
@@dakel20 "Dirigible" just means "controllable" or "steerable", as opposed to a free flight balloon that depended only on air currents for where it goes. A non-rigid airship can be a dirigible. Most of the Navy blimps from WWII were non-rigid but they were dirigible.

To be precise, a Zeppelin was built by the Zeppelin company. Otherwise it's a "rigid airship".

Ekranoplans are generally classed as GROUND EFFECT VEHICLES, rather than aircraft. Indeed, they operate just above the surface of water [typically], snow, ice, or [sometimes] land. There were some Soviet aircraft that could use Ground Effect and also fly at altitude...such as the VVA-14 [aka Thunderbird 2, because of its appearance], but that is another story.

Loved the review of the Takom Zeppelin models! Zeppelins are my favorite tech/history geek out; here's some background on the different types of ships used during WWI: During the early war years, both the German Army Air Force (Luftstreitkräfte) and German Navy operated Zeppelins to raid England and France conjointly, this lasted until September of 1916 when the Luftstreitkräfte lost one of its brand new ships, the SL-11, on its first raid, and subsequently lost all interest in operating Zeppelins and long range bombing of England, letting the Navy Airships Division, commanded by the zealous KptLt. Peter Strasser, continue these operations on their own. There was a single Type-N Class Zeppelin LZ-26, which entered service with the German Army Air Force under tactical ID Z XII in December of 1914; it was a successful bomber that made 11 combat flights over Northern France and the Eastern Front. She dropped a total of 44,000 lbs of bombs and later an additional 20,000 lbs on the Warsaw to Petrograd trunk railway line and was able to carry 6,600 lbs each flight. The next model in the series was Type-M Class Zeppelin of which 11 were built. There were only two Type-O Class Zeppelins, but 22 of the evolved Type P-Class and 12 Type-Q Class, which were unfinished Type-P Class hulls that were lengthened to provide more lift. The all new Type-R Class "Super-Zeppelin" debuted in May of 1916. Karl Arnstein referred to the Type-R Class as being the first "modern" Zeppelin design. They were able to carry 61,00 lbs of bombs with a range of 4600 miles. 17 examples were built, the last, LZ-90 in 1917. Meanwhile, Zeppelin Company engineers worked on the Type-S Class, known as the Height-Climber, due to its lightened structure to improve maximum altitude ceiling. 1917-1918 saw several smaller scale classes with the Class-T Type (2), Class-U Type (5), Class-V Type (10), Class-W Type (2 which saw service in the Mediterranean) and the Class-X Type (3) which were to be the last wartime Zeppelins constructed.

Love the WIG Wing In Ground effects Ekranoplan. When these came out there was talk of 3 versions. The one the model is as stated is the anti-ship version. It carries 6 SS-N-22 Sunburn ASCM with a 68 to 80 mile range, though supposedly the range has been increased. The larger radar dome on the top of the tail is called Front Dome which guides the 22. The other versions were one that was supposed to carry troops and the other was going to focus on ASW.

I'm glad that lighter than air vehicle models are getting some interest. For a while only had older models of Hindenburg, etc. US Navy K Class blimp kits have been around. If these German WW1 zeppelins sell well, hopefully Takom will consider some of the interwar famous zeps - the US Navy types (Los Angeles, Akron, Macon), Graf Zeppelin, and of course Hindenburg. I think the USS SHENONDOAH is close to a Q class. That would be a neat kit bash (decals?).

If you want to know why Ekranoplans and WIG's failed take a look at the online photos of the engine inlet rings. Those are bird strike dents on the inlets. Grounding an air vehicle for three days for an engine change after every flight is kind of expensive.
@darkwood777
@darkwood777 2 года назад
I'm surprised they didn't have just one kit for the zeppelin and give you the option of minding the Ps and Qs by your adding in the midsection or not. I guess they ran the numbers and decided it was worth the cost of boxing them as two different models.

If you are interested in ekranoplans there is a kit of the transport ekranoplan A-90 from Zvezda. I also seen claims that A-90 could fly up to 1000 meters high for a short periods of time (a so called "jump"). There is a footage over the youtube of the thing actually in action. It officially entered the service however since it was late 80th only few were produced. The kit itself is pretty easy, however since it is early Zvezda kit have few sink marks that needs filling and packaging is not great (due to poor packaging few small antennae that were moulded on the fuselage broke off and I had to create one from plasticard).
