For early George, I would have included "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" instead of "Roll Over Beethoven." It was a Lennon-McCartney composition, but George sang lead. Instead of "You Really God a Hold on Me" and "You Can't Do That," I would have selected "If I Fell" and any of the following: "You're Gonna Lose That Girl," "Think for Yourself (if you want more George), or "The Word."

The original Red and Blue collections more or less gave you all the single a sides and some of the double a sides and unlike the later Past Masters threw in single a sides that had been on albums too. To those who are decrying the omissions of “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”, I have it on good authority that there are plans for a “Beatles Anthology” remix: both the CDs and the DVDs although it has never been released on Blu-Ray. Reportedly, there are additional hours of footage of Paul, George and Ringo from 1995-96 which has never been seen. And, Peter Jackson is rumored to be involved with this. Last but not least, there is possibly going to be additional outtakes on the remixed “Anthology” albums. The 30th anniversary is coming up in a couple of years.

The Anthology film 100% needs to be upgraded and put on streaming (I suppose Disney+), but that in no way should have kept FAAB and RL off of Blue, when they are positioning Red and Blue as career-spanning. To skip over the '90s tracks but include a 2023 track is absolutely bizarre. (Then again, they really should have simply created a new comp altogether for these remixes and kept Red and Blue as the originals and only 62-70). Anyway, lots of remixed 62-66 tracks were added to Red, and those individual albums from that era will be re-released in the coming years as well. That didn't stop Apple from adding those tracks to Red! So why should future plans to reissue the Anthology soundtracks have stopped Apple from adding FAAB and RL? Fans will re-buy Anthology for the hours of other exclusive content those discs have on them.

Matt, i TOTALLY agree with you about the questionable addition of the tracks "Roll Over Beethoven", "You Can't Do That", "I'm Only Sleeping", "Glass Onion" & "I Want You". If you look at this from the point of view of someone just discovering The Beatles - these songs don't represent the Beatles mainstream sound - or in the case of Roll Over Beethoven & You Can't Do That some much better choices could have been made. Also "She's A Woman" & "Rain" were an absolute must for this set.

As a younger (and poorer) person, I see these as being more for streaming. I don't think the physical releases are the main concern anymore. Most older Beatles fans probably have the songs they love on vinyl already. That said, I would definitely have picked different tracks and this definitely seems like a pandering to George songs which, honestly, don't need to be here all the time. I love the original demo of 'Now And Then' and hope the new version retains at least in part some of that lonely soulfulness John carries. To have a 'new' Beatles song released in my lifetime is definitely exciting, and if it's the same technology used as was with Get Back then I'm sure it could sound really good. I'm an old fart with tons of physical media taking most of the wall space in my apartment, but in contrast to me, my daughters love streaming, they stream all their music and movies, and they think physical media is a huge burden. So, there you have it, will collecting physical media be reduced to a tiny percentage of music lovers in the future? The resurgence of vinyl, repackaged and re-priced for audiophiles, has helped immensely in creating new, young collectors, but most of them consider record collecting definitely a luxury habit, not a very common and very affordable thing as it was in my youth. Shelving big, heavy collections is a pain, so I can see where they're coming from. Streaming is super convenient and high quality if you have decent components for it.

I don't know. The Red and blue albums as well as 1 are going to be the defacto go to releases for casual listeners. @@Maytricks_Lee_VR I think there's something to what you say about having to make the effort, not making it too easy. Like singles and B-sides. I find that several of Harrison's 1967 songs have a sort of stand-alone quality. They somehow don't flow as well on the albums, this being the era when Harrison had pretty much lost interest in playing guitar and took up organ and droning instruments such as 'Within You Without You,' 'Only a Northern Song,' 'It's All Too Much,' 'Blue Jay Way,' 'Inner Light.'

Never saw that promo sampler of the red & blue before. Waaay cool. I don't know if I stated it here, but what they should've added to the existing red and blues would be to add #1 - all the charting songs from 1963-1976 and #2 - all the "other" songs from UK & US "hit" compilations (A COLLECTION OF BEATLES' OLDIEIS to 1982s 20 GREATEST HITS). Right there, might be lengthy, but there you have it. The trailer for the single is veeeery interesting. They talk with Ringo about playing on the track, but the excerpt from a George interview (1995) is about them finding the track, or "a" track. Ringo mentions Paul contacting him to put the drum track on, etc., etc. They don't mention George participation on the track because, the old "lore" (circa 1999-2000) was that George never was on it, because he didn't want to do it and/or didn't care for the song. Then, shortly after, George passed, and the song went in to a "limbo" state. Unless they lifted a track from a band rehearsal of the song before George went back home, he's probably not on the "new" track at all. We'll see what they credit George with on this track, if anything. I've heard (maybe here) that they might "AI" some backing vocals. Also, with "Now And Then," the Jeff Lynne produced version kept on popping up here on RU-vid every two to three years, and I think most of us have had our own dub of that mix for a while. Paul was probably advised against releasing that now. What would Jeff Lynne do about it? My feeling is that perhaps Paul doesn't want to find out, and that's why the Lynne co-produced ANTHOLOGY tracks aren't part of this new collection. The new compilations aren't the answer to everything. That's not their intent, it's to get a "new" product out by Christmas. Following the Apple schedule, the actual "box set" might be out by 2040 or so.

I agree with everything you said here, though I'd probably put Helter Skelter in place of Glass Onion. With the Yellow Submarine songtrack from 1999 and the Magical Mystery Tour Blu Ray and all the box sets, "The Inner Light" is the only 1966-1970 to still await a released remix. So, I'd have put that in place of Within You Without You (it's also a better song in my opinion).

Once again you nailed it Matt. I agree with you on everything. Sad thing is that all the powers that be will milk the golden cow until it’s dead. How many times can you pay for the 15:35 same songs?? And truthfully not many people can hear any difference between them when they do remix. Lol. I know I can’t.

Considering that 7 of the 14 Rubber Soul tracks were remixed for the updated Red compilation… representing perhaps the best songs on Rubber Soul… they kind of shot their wad for an upcoming album remix project, if one is ever planned. Did Giles remix the whole album while he was at it… or did he stop with just those 7 tracks? Would love to know. I am looking forward to true official stereo mixes of Love Me Do and She Loves You. There have been some excellent fan efforts to demix/remix the early tracks, so I’m wondering what the official efforts will sound like in comparison. I wish they had left covers off of these compilations, as there is simply too much great original material to choose from. I don’t mind the inclusion of Twist and Shout, but the other covers were unnecessary. Why not highlight other tracks like It Won’t Be Long, Things We Said Today, If I Fell, etc. Only one Beatles For Sale track is here. Why not add No Reply or any of the other excellent original tracks from this album? On the other hand, I’m okay with not remixing Free As A Bird and Real Love at this time. I kind of like the ghostly-sounding vocals from John. He sounds like he’s singing from a faraway dimension, which works for those tracks.

The point of this release is to provide a gateway to The Beatles, much like "1" did before. There is no doubt that hearing the catalog with the new technology left certain impressions on the Apple decision-makers. The question is why were these songs chosen? Summary below! I Saw Her Standing There (Paul's energy and familiar Paul tour staple) Twist and Shout (energy/the legend of John's vocal takes) This Boy (vocal harmonies in new technology) Roll Over Beethoven (a George song/young George energy) You Really Got a Hold on Me (vocal performance/groove/George Martin piano in new technology!) You Can't Do That (groove appeal) If I Needed Someone (George/beautiful chimey guitar clarity in new technology) Taxman (George classic) Got to Get You Into My Life (groove, horns with new technology) I'm Only Sleeping (soundscape experience) Here, There and Everywhere (pristine vocals with new technology) Tomorrow Never Knows (soundscape experience) Within Without You (George classic/legacy) Dear Prudence (John/vocals/soundscape) Glass Onion (John/energy/song texture in new technology) Blackbird (Paul classic/staple/mandatory for guitarists) Hey Bulldog (energy/Beatles' fun/just a great song overlooked for decades) Oh Darling (Paul classic/upfront vocal in new technology) I Want You (She's So Heavy) (Rock/Soundscape with new technology) Now and Then (new Beatles' song filled out to the max with new technology?/doesn't qualify as '67 to '70) I will summarize the choices like this: 1. These songs sound great with the new technology! 2. Great little rock and roll numbers representing the Red period. 3. Strong vocal harmonies from the Red period. 4. Groove possibly appealing to modern audiences from the Red period. 5. George Martin and Abbey Road's production and innovation on display in late Red period and Blue period 6. Eclecticism ranging from beautiful vocal harmonies to excellence in rock appealing to a wide range of audiences. I'll stop here, but all of these decisions represent portals into The Beatles music. Face it, the timing of these releases makes them holiday season gifts from Beatle-lovers to potential Beatle-lovers. You can view this as blatant marketing, or a list of reasons for people to discover what The Beatles were all about. And supposedly hearing The Beatles with "the best sound possible" should be somewhat of an experience for all of us.

Seems like they added a lot of songs from the 1976 album "Beatles Rock & Roll". Also, fans have complained for years that when the red album went to CD they could put the whole thing on one CD instead of being charged for a double album. The new version will correct that with more songs added for a true double album. I would have left off " I'm only sleeping" and "Within You Without you. They ruin the flow of the albums I feel. I might have added "PS I Love You" and "Do You Want To Know a Secret". Both songs got a lot of radio play back in the day.

Amazing, I also would have picked 'Rain' over 'I'm Only Sleeping', good call. Although I grew up with those Red and Blue albums and cherished them I never bought them on CD. The Red album could have fit on a single disc it was so short. And I can make my own CDRs if I wanted to. They definitely could have added more to that one. I like your choice of 'It's All Too Much' as well. I did not re-purchase their first 5 albums when the 2009 remasters came out. But if they could remix them with new technology to give us true stereo I'd certainly buy them. When the Anthology releases came out 'Free as a Bird' and 'Real Love' were released as CD singles with 3 extra tracks NOT on the albums. They could re-release those as singles.

Question for all Beatles experts: on RU-vid, there’s a version of “Revolution” which appeared on the Anthology box set which, as far as I can tell, doesn’t exist anywhere else. It combines the hard rock version with a the “shooby doo-wahs” from Paul and George. Does anyone know if there’s anywhere else to hear it? Thanks!

Matt-thank you so much. Indulge me, as I reminisce but in the seventies when the red and blue set came out, the big albums knocked us flat. We knew the past 10 years had been a wild ride, but the boxed set absolutely stunned us. We thought of the Boys as Mozart and Beethoven. To our ears “Hide Your Love” was the cornerstone of folk rock; “I Want to Hold Your Hand” now in stereo was a revelation. The red and blue hit all the highest high points without missing a beat. The playlist on the 2023 set is fine but won’t have the impact of the 1973 issues. There are just too many “deep cut” songs that will bore, distract or confuse the casual listener. Play Within You to any millennial and they’ll be reaching for their vapes and starring out the window. What I would have done would be this: add the great songs that never made the cut: If I Fell; I Should Have Known Better; She’s a Woman; Rain; Hey Bulldog; You’re Gonna Lose That Girl; I Need You; Blackbird; Two of Us. Instead of “Within You Without You” I would have used the demo of “Sour Milk Sea”. It’s better than anything on the Yellow Submarine album.
@popgoesthe60s52
@popgoesthe60s52 11 месяцев назад
Imaging taking the time an effort they used on Now and Then and applied it to Sour Milk Sea or All Things Must Pass. But by calling Now and Then "tha last Beatle song" or something to that effect will deny us some true gems that would be more valuable than what we've just been given. Great comment. Thanks Tosstrap!

Things We Said Today I'll Follow The Sun Rain Love You To For No One She's Leaving Home Blue Jay Way Baby I'm A Rich Man The Inner Light Happiness Is A Warm Gun I Will Helter Skelter Cry Baby Cary Because You Never Give Me Your Money Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End Free As A Bird Real Love The above listed songs would make a greater album than almost any other band's greatest hits compilation and yet none of these songs are included on the new and expanded albums. My point isn't just that it's unfortunate that none of these songs are included, but rather that The Beatles were so great and prolific that even a 75 song compilation isn't enough.

I'm very excited for the new song, although I don't really care for the Red and Blue Albums since I don't like compilations. Apple missed the mark of doing something with the Anthology series which would've been far more interesting. Some of the added songs are also very odd, there's still barely any songs from Beatles For Sale. They could've at least included No Reply or Kansas City, considering that they added cover songs.

I disagree with I'm Only Sleeping, which if you remember was released as a video for the Revolver box set, and Glass Onion which is absolutely great song and fits very well. Those weren't technically "greatest hits" albums, since many of the songs originally included had never been released as singles. I do agree including Within You Without You is an odd choice, but that's fine. And there's no way they don't remix Rubber Soul, but who knows their exact plans. And I am with you that the mono versions of their albums up through Sgt. Pepper are really the definitive versions as far as I'm concerned.

I notice among the old-songs-newly-added for both Red and Blue albums, fully HALF are John-focused: RED BLUE Twist and Shout Dear Prudence This Boy Glass Onion You Can't Do That Hey Bulldog I'm Only Sleeping I Want You (She's So Heavy) You Really Got a Hold on Me Tomorrow Never Knows with the other HALF divided equally between Paul: RED BLUE I Saw Her Standing There Blackbird Got to Get You into My Life Oh! Darling Here, There and Everywhere and George: RED BLUE Roll Over Beethoven Within You Without You If I Needed Someone I Me Mine Taxmen implying that John was twice as important for contributig to the group musically as Paul was, who in turn was no more a contributor than George. So who chose these tracks, Yoko Ono??
