Here is a comparison video of my three favorite prewar Gibson banjos. A 1928 PT-6, a 1928 TB-6, and a 1931 PB-3. Enjoy!

Someday I'll play that good. It's cool seeing a closeup so I can study how it's done. Many thanks!!

All 3 sound terrific & it's hard to pick a definite favorite without being in the same room with them. There's nothing like hearing one in person, but my ear is drawn to the TB-6, right out of the gate. It's clean & crisp, yet still warm all at the same time. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but it has a different attack from the other 2 & the 4th seems a bit more responsive. The PT-6 really has the "Earl sound" in the 3rd string slur. The PB-3 isn't quite as warm as the other 2, but that should be an expected difference in Gold vs Nickel plating. The PB-3 is also a little more open & "bell sounding" at the heel end of the neck. That "bell" sound, down the neck, is something I always look for in a good banjo. All 3 are top tier banjos to be sure. These are just subtle differences that I noticed with my studio headphones. Any one of the 3 will surely get the job done in spades!!!!!!! "It's mighty dark for me to travel."

What is with the PB-3 G string? It has crazy resonance when open. is that just the mic or is that how it sounds to you?
