This is definitely the best rewrite I’ve seen so far. If you’re willing to read my comment, I have a few thoughts, critiques, and praises I’d like to share. While the themes of loneliness, existentialism, and simplicity are definitely important for Minecraft, I think themes like creativity and exploration are more important to the idea of Minecraft because they give the player reason to play. The lack of speaking makes sense to show the loneliness of the Minecraft world, but what do you think about including conversations between Alex and Steve? I think Alex’s adventurous personality and Steve’s Creative personality would complement each other nicely and allow viewers to understand the additional themes of Minecraft. Having 2 characters would still allow the theme of loneliness to challenge the pair because 2 is still pretty small compared to the near infinite sandbox, but now the themes of adventure, discovery, and creativity and the characters’ thoughts can be expressed. Conversations between the two characters would also open the movie up to a wider audience. Plus the dog may have potential to be a comedic character for younger audiences as it is an adorable animal companion. The way you began the movie starts like all Minecraft games do, which is a good way to stay true to the game, but It is a bit counterproductive, because there isn’t really a beginning “hook” or status-quo to engage the viewers and introduce the normal, pre-adventure, lives of the characters. It seems like the characters would start in one of 2 ways. They would start as strangers to the world, like you wrote about, which is nice because it leans into the metaphor of the dream, but you should probably explain how the characters got into the “dream of the game”. One way this could be done is having the Deities narrate the conflict (why we want to kill the ender dragon) during the opening sequence and how they are going to solve the problem (sending people into the “dream”). The next scene would introduce the character and his normal life, and then he would finally appear in the game. The characters could also start is as native adventurers. (The conflict would be the same.) This second version would prevent the movie from using the dream metaphor, but it allows us to tell the story without excessively focusing on the “weirdness” of the world is” (as it would be normal for native characters.) As the movie progresses, you’ve done a wonderful job at compiling the universal and dramatic experiences of Minecraft, but I didn’t really get a feel for the character development. These story aspects could be made more apparent by drawing more attention to the aspects of the plot that align with the hero’s journey or kishōtenketsu models, but really we just need to show how the character has changed since they were introduced. Contrasting the ideals of the protagonists against the ideals of the ender dragon would also serve to strengthen the plot and character development and it would provide an actual reason to fight the dragon instead of doing so “because that’s what you do in Minecraft”. To accomplish this the Deities would need to direct the characters into standing against the antagonistic force of the dragon, but it would prevent the movie from just being a series of dramatic events set in the Minecraft world. The conclusion of the movie is also missing a return to the status quo after Steve wakes up. This ending scene would show how he will continue to use what he learned from the dream to improve his once ordinary life in the future. As far as the rest of the plot goes, I like how it shows off Minecraft at a natural pace, but some of the plot points may have to be rearranged to better suit the development. The pillagers for example, would make more sense as a part of world building during a village scene, because while they are an integral part of villager society & the greater game experience, they aren’t associated with the game’s main story. And other details like the pillar outpost, witch hut and soul speed boots don’t really have any narrative value whatsoever. Having Steve wander around and explore to find the various plot points is the one area that wasn’t actually accurate to the game. A player with no outside knowledge wouldn’t usually think to approach the game in this way, so the plot needs something to give him a narrative reason to do these things for reasons outside of the game’s mechanics. The last thing that bugged be was his use of the respawn mechanism for fast travel. Yes people do it in game, but it implies that his lives really aren’t that valuable, and it reduces the tension in the plot. With my criticisms out of the way, I really loved your use of the Deities and the world’s structures to teach the players. I also really liked your mention of the recipe book, because people always assume the crafting system is magical instead of just a simplified interface. The character development you did include is really nice because each time he fails at something, he learned from it. My favorite part about this movie idea is the care you put into the emotional experience of the game as a whole, but especially during the dragon fight and end poem. Ultimate this is a really nice movie about the typical Minecraft experience, and while it is definitely refreshing in contrast with the big studio version, it is missing several key elements that are preventing it from reaching it’s potential as a feature film. I would definitely watch this if it ever got made tho. Good job 👍

Thank you for your constructive criticisms, I appreciate the thought you put into my draft! I wasn’t necessarily making this video to fully flesh out a movie script, so I didn’t write to the extent that you’ve put thought into. Though I totally agree that in order for this story to work better as a film, there needs to be narrative drive toward the adventurous and more seemingly random aspects of interacting with the world of Minecraft. I also agree that Steve would need clear signs of development, and the themes of creativity/exploration and narrative foils between Steve and the Ender Dragon should be explored far deeper, those are very important for getting more people invested in this story! Although once again, I didn’t want to explore the intricacies and rules of filmmaking in a video like this, this was merely my bullet point list of things I thought would make a Minecraft movie more enjoyable. There’s a thousand different ways to tell the story of Minecraft, this is merely a draft of one of them. I intentionally left Alex out of this potential first movie so that everything you mentioned could be explored in a sequel that I have many ideas for and am considering making a second video on! I think there’s a ton of development to be had for Steve after going on this adventure and experiencing the loneliness of it all, then having to share this world with another being like himself. Once again, thank you for your comment!
