I've compiled information comparing Woodmizer, Woodland Mills, Frontier, Norwood, Timber King, Hud-Son and Vallee portable sawmills to help you make an informed decision. All of these manufacturers offer what appears to be a good product. Some are more expensive than others and some have more features than others. I encourage all of you to check out this video to see what I think about each of these products as you go through the daunting task of choosing which one best suits your needs. In a perfect world I'd own all of these portable sawmills but since the wood I cut doesn't get turned easily into money, I'm stuck surfing the internet and scouring the specification lists. Owned a Cooks MP-32 for 5 years. Heavy duty. Lots of cuts. Very manual adjustments. Great people to deal with.

I own a Timberking 1200. Same as the 1220 just older. I have had this sawmill for 20 years. I researched several sawmills before I bought this model. Yes the Timberking is the most expensive, but you get what you pay for. This thing is built like a tank. The other thing I like is you can fix it out of your local parts house. My other friends have different sawmill and only way to get parts is through a dealer. I got the towing package and extensions. This mill payed for itself in about 2 years. Love this mill and company.

I just bought a Big red XP from Vallée, they are extremely well made for the price. Nothing on it is cheap, and if a piece needs a replacement you can get it at any hardware store.

Jim at TheTradesmanChannel has a Hudson HFE-30 with some bed extensions that he got for making his timber frame barn. He's happy with it. Of course he is in New York as is Hud-Son. Great video. From the Canadian sawmills that Vallee brand sure does offer some great value in bandsaw mills.

You're right about the Hud-son products. They seem like great stuff. The only issue for me is the Canadian exchange rate. The Vallee brand does look like a great Canadian company for sawmills as well. I"ll definetly be checking those out in the future.

I was a Hudson dealer several years ago and I offered the track extensions and trailer kits custom built here in my shop. I then sold Dyna bandmills for about 10 years and offered upgrades built here until Dyna discontinued the bandmills. They didnt have time to produce them due to the popularity of their firewood processors. I am still a Dyna dealer to this day. If I had the time I would produce my own line of bandmills but there is so much competition now that it might be struggle to get established. Shell Forest Products LLC. Harrodsburg, KY

I've been looking at Norwood and Woodland Mills for a few months now. Really appreciate this insight as well as other comments on this thread. FYI.. Frontier is Norwood's less expensive version made in of all places, CHINA. Made with Chinese steel not US Steel like in their proprietary mills that are made in USA!!! Will be doing more research into these other brands after viewing this. Thanks!!

Big difference in frames. low end is angle and more expensive machines are tube. Overall weight is a great tool for evaluating strength and durability of structure.

I've been doing the research on all these mills for the last 3 years. You get what you pay for. Hands down penny for penny best overall value is TimberKing and in a close second place Vallee. If you request their information package on these mills. Their prices are less then advertised on their website. You'll also get information on available accessories. If I live through this Coronavirus. A TimberKing 1600 will be on my property this year.

I should have ordered direct or from a vendor in the states. I ordered in April, and received an email that we can meet somewhere for delivery next week.

Great information. Have you considered posting the spreadsheet so it is available to all? I think having the ballpark figures is helpful to look at on paper in our own time. As a guy who does analytics, I thought it might be helpful to have and analyze without having to pause scroll back or dig to find specifics? I write reports dashboards visualizations and comparisons all the time so paper for me at least is preferred. Would you be able to do that? Great job by the way really informative interesting and effective. Also, have you considered doing a Top comparison of the cheaper brands? In addition, I am curious why there are not more electric motors since they are more efficient and can be lighter to move. Obviously, the gas engine is more convenient for remote areas but you can always bring a generator that should provide enough energy for producing boards. Your thoughts are appreciated.

I liked the Cook MP-32 sawmill but Wow! I just looked at the COOK Sawmill website and checked the current price of the MP-32 Sawmill and what a shock, it's now $12,750, up from $7, 995 when you did this video a couple years ago. That puts it out of my budget now. I am probably going to purchase a Woodland Mills HM130MAX sawmill. To me, It looks to be the best quality for the money, and customer service is worth a lot these days, which I have read over a hundred reviews on Woodland mills and over 99% are outstanding comments about how great their customer service is to deal with. Great job with your comparison of mills, it really helped making my decision of which mill to purchase.

Been looking into the LT15WIDE, because it has the 10hp 1p electric motor option. And will saw 8x8 beams. Ill have to look into the cooks mill since it offers an electric engine as well

About time ... I've been waiting for you to post something else on this subject. To bad they are all closed. How things have changed since last time we communicated on this. You know where I stand. Woodland Mills beats all. Unfortunately I'm not able to pick up my new saw mill ... and I'm so upset, but safety first. Guess i have to wait. Consider yourself fortunate. You are right about how things are different since we last spoke. I got tied up doing maple syrup and the. Covid hit and things are in almost a whirlwind around me. The sawing keeps me sane. You’ll be out sawing in no time I’m sure once this all clears up. I wish you and your family good health.

In the meantime, spring is here, weather is changing, and i have to prep so much up north before i can even use it. I live in the city, 90 minutes away from my land. I just hope I'm not told i can't get out to drive there. Did you here Mr. Ford today talking about OPP enforcement? I can just see myself getting pulled over on hwy 400 north. I know there are worse things to worry about, but man, i was so looking forward to spring, and particularly spending time up there with the saw mill and building my barn over the summer. Quebec is shut down until at best May 1st - that means the whole month of April has just disappeared. Let's see what our premier has to say tomorrow. I'm pretty sure we will follow. Not sure how long it's going to be before some of us 'city folk' start going nuts in the city. I need my north. I need my outdoor woodland space.

We've got a Clarke sawmill made out of Lindsay, ON. So might not be too far out of your neck of the woods. They're a little more pricey, but built like a tank. The only downside is part of the frame is in front of the blade, but still not too inconvenient. Ours has been running for almost 20 years now with virtually nothing failing on it cutting mostly hardwoods. Might not fit your preference, but it suits our needs quite well.

I think adding the Thomas Bandsaw Mill model 3220 would also be a good machine to compare. They are manufactured in Maine. This is the mill I decided on after a lot of research. I'm picking it up at the manufacturer next month. Check them out!

I have the Hudson Oscar 428, it's a small pro model. 14 Kohler electric start with an electric winch to raise and lower the head. The bed is 12' and you can get extensions. I looked into woodland Mill buts it's not to available in NY. Hudson is made in central NY

Interesting research. I'm hoping to get my mill next year. It's a hard to choose... my goal is to to build a walnut timber frame myself and mill as much of the material as possible for the build. I don't really have plans to mill as a business. I go back and forth between the $5000 range and can easily talk myself up to the WoodMizer LT15WIDE, but the LX150 looks even better. My property has walnut, hickory, red oak, burr oak, hackberry and a ton of eastern red cedar. What mill would you choose? Any chance I can get a copy of your spreadsheet?

You sure do have some nice wood to mill by the sounds of it! I love walnut but have very little here. Most pine spruce or fir trees around. I know what you mean about the high end mills. I could easily convince myself for those mills as well but I’d be in big trouble haha. The woodland mills does a great job for my uses which is t a commercial use. If you was starting new, with disabilities, what would your top 3 wood mills be? And possibly your positives and negatives? Also rate them 1-3? Hi Ron. Thanks for watching. For me Price is the big separation for these mills as I can’t afford many of the high end mills so that begins to narrow it down. I can only speak to what I’ve owned and that puts woodland mills at the top for me since it’s been serving me well at a good price for years

transparency in anything is worth alot to me, even something as simple as a sawmill company, its a big win for woodmizer they just tell it how it is and give you all the details you need, only reason to contact them i can see is to ask when you can pick yours up i didnt know the norwood was so closely priced to the woodland mills i though it was a notch above, wonder how the useability and construction/design between those two specifically compare the timber king looks like a beat but once youre spending 12-13k masewell just throw the other 10k onto a payment plan and get yourself hydraulics and a machine you could make a part time job out of rather than just a hobby

I bought a Frontier about 3 months ago. Still waiting on parts they back ordered and they’ve been a nightmare to deal with the whole time. I don’t know if they’re just overloaded as they say, but it’s been a terrible experience. The frontier is a great mill. But knowing what I know now, I would’ve gone with Woodland Mills.

I haven’t been able to fire it up yet. It takes them days to get back to you, the service is terrible. If not for a little common sense and your videos it wouldn’t even be assembled. Even in the beginning they somehow had the wrong shipping address and i couldn’t get an answer to get them to change it. Had to call the shipping carrier for days by myself. Just an aweful experience. The mill is great but the company is terrible. Crazy thing is they’re about a half hour from me as well. Thanks for the videos and all the info! Best and most inspiring channel for sawmills on the tube! I love that you post even when things don’t go right. Thanks and keep up the great work!!

You can also add extra length to the Hudson Hfe30 very easy with extra track section or build your own. Very easy.

I know you have a sponsor but if you step down to the freedom line at Hudson the prices are closer to the Woodland Mills and they're not made in China. I've been looking into the quality.

Interesting..that a mill would use a winch to adjust height of the cut.......sounds like it might be a pain to get a consistent height. One of the most important things on a mill is being able to get consistent depth of cut. My mill is electronic control....on these little mills make sure depth of cut is easy and accurate. I actually am considering one of these mills because of the hand crank system of height adjustment

From what I’ve read the electric winch is very accurate but I haven’t owned one so can’t say from experience. My woodland mills is a hand crank and is very accurate and can be fine adjusted if it gets out of spec

Ive used and abused my EZ Boardwalk Jr for 4 years. Rock solid product. Milled 100 16ft logs easily. If I had to make the choice again I would not hesitate for a second. Plastic components or a bolt together bed would immediately disqualify a sawmill for me. Proprietary components should be another red flag.

Bought the Woodland mills HM 126........ still sitting on the delivery skid because they send me the wrong post size for the cutting head to move up and down on, 3 weeks later still waiting. I am 1.5hrs from Port Perry and it might just be worth getting it myself because it doesn’t seem like they are in to big of a rush to help a customer out. 😒

Hi Robert. I’m not too familiar with that model. I did have a look at it a minute ago and it’s a very unique idea. I don’t see why that wouldn’t work out just fine. Only issue may be how to rotate a big log since you can only really move the log by standing on one side. Besides that it looks great to me

The Hudson HFE30 has blade guides that will open to 31 1/2 inches. I would like to know how wide the blade guides will open on all the other mills.

I have the Timberking 1400 and it has 32.5 inches between the guides.

@@sawingwithsandy you will find that Baker Saws is a huge player in the heavy duty sawmill ind they offer several choices for portable sawing. built in the heart of old world logging, Reynolds co in southern MO. i am not an associate nor am i a saw owner i have done the research as well and i like Baker saws for many reasons that are important to me, when i make my purchase this spring it will be hard for me to buy anything else ......Baker HD 18 portable sawmill is top of my list.

Hi Sandy! I’m from northern Alberta and soon to be moving to the Edmonton area so weather should be similar to what you have. I’ve been watching your videos for some time now and wanted to first of all, thank you for all the great info. I’m a first time sawyer and just retired! I wanted your advice on the HM130. I am looking at a used one with a lot of extra bells and whistles. From what I have researched the price is good. Also included is a tooth setter, sharpener, log loader, and about 20 blades. I’m just starting out and thought this would be a great unit for me. Any suggestions on things that I should be looking at before I sign the deal? I’m going to have to travel about 14 hours to pick it up in southern BC so I wanted to have all my questions ready for the seller before I head out there. Thanks! Gerald

Hi Gerald. Great to hear from you and happy to hear you're about to get into sawing. You'll really enjoy it! The main thing I"d look for is how much use the sawmill has had and how the price of the used unit compares to brand new. With that being said, it is nice to not have to assemble the sawmill if you buy it used as that can take several days in itself. I'd be sure to see the sawmill cut a piece of wood if possible before you buy just to be sure everything is setup well. Aside from that it sounds like the perfect setup to get started with nothing further you'd have to buy with the exception of many a cant hook for rolling logs.

Web info does not always tell the whole story. Because of NAFTA there is a lot of coop between the 2 countries but delivered price is considering tariffs, taxes ect. That info is different.

I like the hm126. Seems like a perfect size for the majority of tree species and has the option of the 14hp engine which is the same size as what comers on the Hm130max. I've run the Woodland Mills for years and have been happy with their quality.

Frontier couldn’t even get back to me with answers. We have a tax exempt and you were giving me such a runaround Woodland the card right away and that was it. I called Thursday last week. I had an 11 AM within 10 minutes. I had my invoice with the taxes off. Just have to pay for it tomorrow.

Tried talking to vallee dealer. He told me price went up 1200 because of steel price. Said I would pick up. Hiked price 1200 for shipping from factory to him. Emailed company but they weren’t any more honest. Trying to gouge customers at this time.

The closest dealer to me that's not wm..and has fair price is Hudson ...is it a must to have a service dealer close? ..Hudson also has 6 year warranty on their bearings... Does Woodland Mills have warranty on bearings??

I personally like having a dealer available close by but it’s not a necessity for me as I never even goto to dealer in person and instead order parts when needed and have it shipped. Not sure about warrant in bearings

The only real choice to be commercially viable is the select 4221. The most important question is do you absolutely have to be mobile. If you can avoid it then a wide band vertical or slant mill will out cut a horizontal. So you must have a mobile then make sure it is supported both sides of the log.

@@sawingwithsandy if you can find it online then a good read is the evolution of the modern bandsaw. I think it was by the Prescott company. Old old saws that did the job. In the 1970s big step forward for static sawmill technology in general but Some incredible research was done on blade design. Thin kerf industries I believe was responsible for the funding. Huge outputs and feeds. Then along come narrow blade mobile saws and step back 100+years. BUT YOU DON'T NEED A PIT!!! From memory pit saws disappeared in Europe in about 1800. But being serious all saws/sawmills have a place. The hard part is making it fit with what's needed.

Sandy, I know you just got the 130MAX Woodlander. Do you have any regrets. I am looking to buy a mill and am torn between the SMG 20 efi abd the Bordwaol ez40. I will be cutting a lot of both hardwood and softwood. Mt concerns with the woodlander are the power, and the fact that it is a bunch of assembled pieces and not welded. However it is hard to ignore the $3000 -$5000 price difference. What are your 2 cents on this? Are you located in the Barrrie Ont. area. Enjoy your show. I'll be building in th eIron Bridge Ont. area.

Hi Dan, Great to hear from you. I don't have any regrets. I find it performs as reliably as my older HM130 and with the added features like the auto-lube, electric start and now my newly-added power up and down it is even easier to use. I'm sure there are many good sawmills out there which makes the decision tough though. If I were to do it again I'd go with the same setup I currently have with the exception of having 1 additional track extension. Good luck with your decision Dan. Happy Sawing when the time comes

That's all well and good, but if you shop around for a mill you can get a new one for the price of a used one. I own a mini mill 250e .It comes wit a 13hp motor with a23 3/4 throat with a 11ft 7 blade and will cut a 16ft log with built in siding cut feature and turn and saw back the other way without removing the boards and cut down to the last inch.Iwouldnt trade it for nothing.thanks for the review.

Yes it was built in Spokane Washington and is called the mini mill 250 ,which is the smallest and cheapest mill at 7,000$ but it is easy to use and I have almost never had to rev the saw very high to make a cut

It's crucial that a mill has carriage or blade level adjustments. My mill does not, and the carriage/blade is pitched down. Results in blade-dive and wavey cuts.

The thickness above the blade really wouldnt matter much. If you want to mill an 8x8 you would just cut boards off the log until you reach the dimension for an 8x8 then flip the log to mill the other side until you reach that dimension

It would be a huge deal if you are wanting to quarter saw logs over 12”. The Norwood and frontier have a max cutting depth of about 5 3/4” so you count really quarter saw anything over 12” in diameter without getting creative.

A different take on sawmills, are there sawmills that saw small diameter logs more efficiently? Sawing 5 to 10 inch logs can take time, do you have any sugggestions ?

In all honestly I mill mostly 10” trees and under. In my experience get a saw with as much horsepower as you can and keep the blades sharp and you’ll be cutting really quickly.

You compare bandsaws to bandsaws all of which are bandsaws. These are not the only portable saw Mills and are not the fastest or the most cost effective. Swingblade Mills are hands down superior in most aspects and although the upfront cost is more they are way cheaper to operate, and swingblades produce lumber much faster. I own both. A cheap bandsaw has its place for occasional use but if you think you want to really get busy sawing look at swingblade Mills.

I’m not familiar with their capabilities but I do know that some brands of bandsaw mills are $75000+ and used in commercial applications. Some bandsaw mills are less expensive as you mentioned though

Woodmizer have special days often and prices are out of competition. Many sawmills are not engineered, just welded. Norwood is ok in my mind, but sorry, Woodmizer do not have competitors.

the narrow cut width of woodmizers is really irritating. I literally want 30" live edged counter, but my LT35 onlt cuts to 26" other than that I love it and wouldnt buy anything else or even another woodmizer without Hydraulics, setworks and a debarker
