Some colors are rarely or never seen on national flags. For example, the color purple. Until the middle of the 19th century, purple pigment was extracted exclusively from rare molluscs that lived on the Lebanese coast. It was a very time-consuming and expensive process, so purple was considered a royal color.
Another color rarely found on flags is pink. Heraldry considers pink a frivolous and even somewhat frivolous shade.
However, there are exceptions. For example, the flags of Dominica and Nicaragua have a purple tint.
