This year I am starting a price list ahead of my growing and just looking up wholesale prices and comparing. And finding a happy medium and working towards a backwards business plan. This video was a good reminder. This way I am more confident as the busy season comes around and I have a mental reason and business plan for the season. Thanks!!

Thank you so much for this information! It IS hard to put an appropriate price on flowers. I'd love to just give them away but, like you, I have a business. I really needed your gentle encouragement to do what I need to do.

You can do it!!! I agree, it’s hard though. But I can say… I’ve been charging properly for over 3 years now and it feels easy now. And I’m absolutely ok giving a price and allowing people to walk away if they don’t like the price. It gets easier just keep practicing!!

Thank you. I feel this is the most honest video I've seen about pricing. I'm a new business and been putting off going to market out of fear. I'm losing my hearing and love flowers, so I need this to work for me. Thank you for the added confidence booster.

Hi Paula! You can do this!! One of the benefits of needing something to work out is we make it happen because we have to. Lots of people do nothing because of fear, and it is a scary thing but it gets easier really quickly. Wishing you all the best!

Thank you, I really needed to hear this. I'm just at the set-up stage, and after my sister got a scrappy little bunch for $15 at the markets (that was dead in 2 days), I've been super focused on giving customers a much better bunch for $20. Seeing now that I'd included way too many blooms per bunch and would not even make double my outlay. What a blessing to have so many foliage plants on your property! We mostly have gum trees, but I'm not climbing up to get branches. Happy to find fellow countrymen doing this! Looking forward to seeing your other videos.

Hi Bianca! So excited for you to be getting into this! It is very easy to go overboard adding too many flowers. Go visit some of your nearby florists and have a look at their retail pricing and what people are used to paying for. Florists have it down pat or they won’t survive! Good luck!!

@phaedragardeness
@phaedragardeness 2 года назад
Hi Ellie Rose, it sounds like you are going to start growing flowers?! Exciting! I haven’t done either course but the one I personally would choose is Cool Flowers. However.. in your climate you won’t be able to utilise the cool flowers principals as you don’t really get a cold winter season with frosts. From what I know about the course it’s extremely useful though. Probably ask Lisa Mason Ziegler about your climate and the course. I don’t know much about growing in your climate! Dam water works ok. I would definitely plan regular downtime as well as an actual break away from the farm. It’s extremely tiring work!! All the best with your endeavour!! Just get started and you’ll start working out how flowers grow best for you! Run a trial patch with a little bit of all the flowers you want to try and see what likes your conditions and what you like.

Dave Dowling has a course on perennials and bulbs offered in July many years. That would be useful even in your climate, as it goes over growing, picking and processing. Cool Flowers would not be real useful in your situation. The book The Flower Farmer by Lynn Byczynski and the Specialty Cut Flowers book would both probably help as well.

@phaedragardeness

I think that would be too cold for them. Wow, where are you? Maybe if you grew in hot houses but then they will get humid. Our winters get to -6°C and they love that it seems.

I'm a gardener in the states, not a farmer just a gardener. I do enjoy watching a lot of flower farm channels, just had you in my feed. I don't know if using rubber bands to hold the stems would save a few more pennies, I see the farmers here use those. I'm thinking that's what your string is for, just wondering if buying them in bulk may save you some more dollars in the end. I'll be watching your progress, best wishes for your success.
@phaedragardeness
@phaedragardeness 3 года назад
Hi Wende!! I think rubber bands would probably be free (the local post office gives them away!). But we have customers who don't like them. So we just go with the string. The string looks nice too! Thankyou for your good idea though, and your well wishes! Hope to see you around here again soon!!

Don’t give up if this is what you really want to do! This formula is only the very basic bare bones pricing structure but if you are running from a shopfront, have employees or any other big expenses you’ll need to add those into the price of your flowers too!! All the best x
@lisafeck1537
@lisafeck1537 2 года назад
You have to price so you can stay in business. If you make no money on bouquets you will price yourself right out of business. Be confident in charging for all of the hard products you add to the bouquet.
@phaedragardeness
@phaedragardeness 2 года назад
Hi Dawn!! Thankyou for your comment :). This is just a very basic look at pricing in this video. Lots of flower farms charge less than wholesale prices and sell as retail (which hurts everyone, including themselves). I’m hoping by watching this video the farmers will consider the going wholesale rates, then price their flowers up from there. I’ll do another video at some point with more details. Thankyou so much for your comment!!
