This video is about how I price my prints. It's a topic a lot of photographers, myself included, struggle with.
As I explain in this video I think the best place to start is to find a good printer, learn about fine art papers and other materials as well as the logistics, and get an understanding of the costs. From there, it's much easier to work out a fair price for your work.
Any questions let me know!
Cheers,
James

My Dad was an art dealer (giving me a taste for all the stuff I cannot afford, Picasso, Leger and so on). I once asked him how he knew what a painting or sculpture was worth. His answer to me (somewhat tongue in cheek) was, "It's worth what people will pay for it". Sage words. I also learned from him (and later for my brief photography career) that people new to selling their work tend to under=price it, and that buyers are often suspicious of grossly under-priced work.
@oliverhojas
@oliverhojas 2 года назад
Very good point, I agree with that, That's also why need to stay away from discounting art - it's luxury on not goods or services, so we have to treat it like that and people get suspicious if we discount "is it then worth even the discounted price?"

Very reasonable pricing. Many photographers complain their work isn't selling. It's because they're pricing their work too high. Your pricing of 2x to 5x cost is extremely rational. Thanks for the great video. Be well, sir.

One of the strategies I've seen from some people selling online is to set a hard deadline for a sale or limited edition print and stick to it. It can tend to drive that purchase because exclusivity and limited time frame. Also, just had a thought; maybe consider taking some of your best selling works and find someone in the graphic design field to collab with to create illustrative, more iconic (as in iconography, not widely recognized) version that would translate well to t-shirts, mugs, and stuff?

I used to use Photobox to print, then ship to me and i'd sell locally (I didn't sell too many as it was motorsports and mostly to the racers themselves and they notoriously dont have much money), so it was cost effective that way for me. However, I never knew how to price for anything else I did, or if they went off Island where shipping was an issue, so this helps if i ever take another photo with a digital camera. That was a long winded way of saying cheers for the info, James. (No thumbs down so far, so I'll get back to you on that one)

I found it was way cheaper for me to do my own prints with the Epson P800. Getting a service would cost about $75 Canadian for a 16X20 on fine art paper. I can do that on my own printer for about $7-$10. One does not need to but a $13 000+ printer . I guess if your prints are 24 inches wide then using a service makes sense. The Epson p800 was $800 and something Canadian after rebate. They new sell the P900.
@timwilson659
@timwilson659 6 лет назад
Question: You are using at least 3 different formats (5:4, 3:2, 4:3) of the same image, meaning each print format is going to be slightly different in regards to what is on the print. Why not settle on a max of 2 formats (the 3:2 for example can go from 4x6 up to 40x60 and it's the same exact image)

You need to syndicate those for the global poster market. And have a posh bird who can pronounce a number you'd never dare to in a cut glass accent with a straight face, as your agent. Second point, do you think the image will hold up at the largest sizes if you go MFT?
@JamesPopsysPhoto
@JamesPopsysPhoto 6 лет назад

Hi James, that's very useful information to me, thanks mate. I've been trying to find out those figures online and this is the first time it's clear in my head about pricing stuff. Also a very informative video about print sizes you did too. A few things I'd like to ask is, do you insure your prints when you ship them? Do you send them in poster tubes or ready framed? Is it worth selling images on canvas and other mediums? Also I live in the Channel Islands and shipping from here is dearer then in the UK and printing here is probably dearer then in the UK. Should I use a printer in the UK or do you recommend me always sticking with a printer where I live?

I print my own unless I needs a print that's too large for my printer. I still make test prints so that I know that the file I send to Whitewall or Millers is as good as it can be before I send it. I can't aford-or justify- $15,000 for a printer: Not enough work to justify or pay for it.

I have found the answer on Artsy. Now for the benefit of all the newbees like me, here is the answer: ***An A.P. is a copy of the photograph outside of the edition size, often made as a test and reserved for the artist's own collection or to be shown in gallery and museum shows. A photograph can have multiple A.P.s, and some of them may be available for purchase if the rest of the edition is sold out; this is determined on a work-by-work basis.***

Brilliant ,but I have a dilemma,when you use the rough arty paper (I use the Innova smooth cotton 315gm ) I’ve noticed you place plastic in front of it ,I know in this case it’s for your own house and it maybe in this case a lustre finish . But to those who buy it do they mount it without placing the print behind glass/acrylic if so won’t you lose some of the texture ! I’ve been experimenting with photo panels where the print in all its texture is placed on a self adhesive backing .So the texture and detail is seen in all its glory ,however it’s a bit exposed to the elements and has to be handled with care ,a trade off I suppose . Any ideas? Thanks ,Dave

Your exasperated look at about the 2:05 mark is fabulous. Just btw, I'm pretty sure you can find an excellent printer for a lot less than fifteen grand if you are willing to settle for 13 x 19 or 11 x 17 inch maximum dimensions. Obviously that doesn't work for larger prints, but given an envelope and a pen you could probably work out how many small prints you would need to sell to make that route worth your while. One objection to using different printers is that there very likely would be a noticeable difference--not saying better or worse--in the colors, even if you are using the same brand of printer (different model of course) as your service. That might be a reason to ignore the economics of a good home printer anyway... Is that a factor?

+Geoffrey Barss It's certainly something I'm continually considering Geoffrey! We'll see what the future holds 🙂

In an economic perspective it's a too big investment for a photographer to write off and from an artistic point of view it does not make any difference....

That pricing is crazy cheap. I charge 7x to 20x for just the prints and I feel that is too cheap. If it is matted or framed it is about 5x to 7x

Hmm you go multiplier of cost. I've seen some models that use square footage times a multiplier.

So do you sign every print in the edition, or just the AP?

A very naive question. Is it common to have separate limited editions for each size and if so do the buyers ever get upset to find that the photo they bought, sold in more than 100 copies including other sizes? Thanks

Hello Mike, Im a bit late, but... It is common for artists to number limited editions per printsize, so the biggest prints are .../5 while there are many small prints, most people (buying the big prints) know this, and I've seen artists even noting this on their website. Have a nice day! Matthijs

Any video that wastes its first two minutes trying to be funny rather then getting right to the point, is nothing I'm going to devote my time to.

Someone has to look at them. I've sold a few but not many. Just got an order today of 2 A3 ones an A2 one and an A4 one to put up in my house haha. I really like my own photos. And damnit someday someone else will as well. Hopefully. Maybe.
