Elizabeth goes for a walk. She meets Darcy who hands her a letter. In it he explains his belief that Jane was indifferent to Bingley. He describes the problems posed by an association with the Bennet family: Mrs Bennet’s low connections, but more the total lack of propriety so frequently, so almost uniformly betrayed by herself, your three younger sisters, and occasionally even by your father.
The behaviour of all at the ball at Netherfield convinces him of the undesirability of the match.
Thereafter, Darcy, encouraged by Bingley’s sisters, joined Bingley in London and dissuaded him from marriage. He admits that he knew that Jane was in London and that he hid this knowledge from Bingley. He describes Wickham’s upbringing and the close relationship that existed between the late Darcy and his godson. Darcy senior paid for Wickham to go to Cambridge University and hoped to provide him with a career in the church. Darcy junior had never been as impressed with Wickham as his father was. He had the task of promoting Wickham’s career and giving him a living and a legacy of a thousand pounds.
Some six months later Wickham wrote to Darcy to inform him that he had no intention of following a career in the church. Darcy gave him the thousand pounds. Wickham renounced his claim to the living and was given an immediate pay off of three thousand pounds.
Darcy and Wickham heard nothing of each other for three years. Wickham wrote to ask for the church living that he had refused. Darcy refused. Finally during the preceding summer Wickham tried to elope with Miss Darcy and was only just prevented by the intervention of Darcy.
Darcy closes his letter to Elizabeth with an assurance of the truth of his account.
