The narrator explains the background to Mr Bennet’s marriage. He fell in love with his wife’s youth and beauty, but soon lost any love for her. He has devoted his life to reading, and finds in Mrs Bennet a source of amusement and little more. Elizabeth concedes that her father’s behaviour has been irresponsible, especially so far as his daughters are concerned.
Elizabeth looks forward to her visit to the Lakes with the Gardiners, though it is sad that Jane is not able to accompany them. However Elizabeth takes a cynical solace in the fact that as the holiday plan is not quite perfect, she is less likely to be disappointed by it. Lydia writes hurried and infrequent letters.
Things begin to cheer up a month after Lydia’s departure. The social life of Longbourn starts up again. Only two weeks remain before Elizabeth is due to begin her ‘Northern tour’. Mrs Gardiner writes to postpone their departure and shorten the journey.
The new plan is to go only as far as Derbyshire and to visit the places in which Mrs Gardiner used to live. Elizabeth is very disappointed. She cannot think of Derbyshire without thinking of Darcy and his family home at Pemberley. Finally the Gardiners arrive. Their children are left under Jane’s supervision. Elizabeth and the Gardiners find themselves in the small village of Lambton, some five miles away from Pemberley. Mrs Gardiner longs to visit Pemberley. Elizabeth dreads meeting Darcy, but, after finding out that he is absent, she agrees to accompany her aunt.
