It’s the early 20th and the streets are bustling with activity. Businesses are thriving in the African American community and there is prosperity all around. The Rosevelt and the Strand theaters are teaming with people to catch the latest shows. You can feel the excitement in the air. There are black owned law firms, doctors offices, boutiques, restaurants, bars and arguably one of the largest black owned insurance companies in the United States. There is possibility and hope all abound. No this is not Harlem, Brooklyn or the south side of Chicago. It is the Deep South. Jim-crow and segregation are at their heights. This is Lavilla, Jacksonville, Fl. Nestled on the banks of the St. John’s River.
