Pride & Prejudice (1995) Filming Locations
#prideandprejudice #elizabethbennet #mrdarcy
Driving across England, I seek out and find many of the filming locations for the 1995 BBC TV Adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice which starred Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and
Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet. A bit of a voyage of discovery for me as it's one of my favourite go-to TV shows. ‪@jenniferehlereadingfrommyc1836‬

This ‘labour of love’ has been a gem to watch. Any doubts you may have, in the long months of travel, planning, writing and filming, not a second was wasted. This video was pure joy. Yes, l also love this production, and regard it as one of the finest productions the BBC have ever done….and they’ve done a few! I have subscribed,and will work my way through your other well made humble offerings. Thank you for all your efforts bringing this to us. It’s nice to see the locations, and properties used which were unfamiliar to me. I know Lyme Park very well, but it was nice to see the other locations used. Well done young man, you’ve done well. Many thanks.

I can't thank you enough for emphasizing the work of Jennifer Ehle in the '95 P&P production. I agree with you - she was amazing in the crucial (to say the least) role of Elizabeth. Colin Firth was incredible, as well - but not to the exclusion of Jennifer Ehle! With you, I cannot believe that Ehle is not mentioned in the plaque by the church, while Firth is. The whole book is, at center, the story of Elizabeth's journey and growth from her point of view--and Ehle inhabited that role in almost every scene. She did win the BAFTA for her performance.
@TudorSmith

Did Colin Firth steal the show with the wet shirt scene? But you’re right, it’s Elizabeth Bennet’s story and Jennifer Ehle (at least for me) captured the essence perfectly!

A most enjoyable trip through the sites where the 1995 Pride and Prejudice was filmed. It’s so interesting to see what the locations actually looked like and how they were dressed for their roles in the film. This program does show how careful the production was to select houses that show the lives of the residents in their proper social settings. They were as much characters in the story as the people!

The Darcy's Pond scene - the way I read it, he is home, he can now be himself, relaxed, and he is in a way, washing the stress off. When he walks to the house, it's almost jaunty; Elizabeth catches him when he is utterly at ease with himself - and there is the real Darcy. Obviously he is astonished to see her, (pleased), but he is at home, and enough in command of the situation to seize his moment.

I'm a big fan of P&P 95 like yourself and have been fortunate enough to stay in Lizzies room as the owner calls it at the rectory at Teigh. Mr Collins famous closet with shelves is still there..a happy thought indeed! You can also sit in the famous room where the marriage proposal is rejected in no uncertain terms. At the back of Belton House just up from the park is Bellmount Tower and behind this is is a lovely wood with a path through it. This was the location used where Lizzie encounters Mr Darcy on his horse. Also just across from the tower is the location you can still identify he trees where Darcy hands his letter to Lizzie. We recently visited the Derbyshire locations you have featured in your video. The urge to jump in the lake at Lyme was very strong but the wife thought it wouldn't quite have the same effect on her as Colin Firth! Thanks for your wonderful and inciteful video.

Even though you filmed this a year ago, RU-vid has just put it in my path as it knows what a massive fan of the 1995 BBC production of Pride & Prejudice I am. I saw it broadcast originally and have watched countless times since, so like you I can quote the dialogue! Such a thrill to see all the filming locations and what a great job they and you did. My absolute favourite scene filmed at Lambourne was Lady Catherine de Bourgh arriving in her stately carriage with her sickly niece promised to D'Arcy. She demands to know if Lizzie has spoilt her plans as they take a turn about the garden. "Who are you to think you could marry my nephew?!" She wails, "Who is your Mother? Who is your Father?!" Lizzie angrily replies, "He is a gentleman, I am a gentleman's daughter, in that sphere we are equal!" From the days we had magnificent character actors! Every single performance given in that series was superb. I've never been able to watch the 2005 film, after a few minutes of seeing chickens running around Lambourne and I have to switch over. Ooh by the way, there was definitely an extra affectionate rub of the hand by D'Arcy as he helped Lizzie into the carriage, but of course they were an item off set. ❤

Thank you for doing this beautifully presented video. I have visited many of these sites but I did not know where that rock was that we saw Lizzy walking towards when she visited Derbyshire (and find I've driven past it without knowing). This adaptation I believe is the one that started, or rather increased, the fascination with Jane Austen and spawned many other adaptations of her work, which still continue today. I missed this adaptation when it first came out, but when I saw it repeated, somewhere around 2003 I think, I went absolutely bonkers over it, goodness knows how many times I've rewatched it. I know I'd need much more than my hands and feet to count it :) That music brings it all back, wonderfull music, perfectly matching the period music, and I was so sad to hear the composer died recently, last week. Thanks again for this, and for pointing out that astonishing omission of Jennifer Elhe's name on that plaque. Goodness, that's like missing out Renee Zellweger's name on a plaque about Bridget Jones's Diary.

It’s certainly a blend of great acting, beautiful scenery and costumes and enchanting music. Yes I have no idea why they only included Colin Firths name on the plaque since Elizabeth is the central character of the story! If I did a filming locations video for Bridget Jones’ Diary there’d probably be a plaque or two for Colin Firth as Mr Darcy 😜

I love how you quote the dialogue all the way through. Very entertaining for a fan of P&P. Absolutely my favorite adaptation of it, too. Iconic. Got a chuckle out of the Lady Catherine quotes early on (prettiest sort of wilderness, obstinate headstrong girl) and the Mr. Collins one later (modest equipage).

It’s ever so fleeting. I wonder if it was a direction given or just an impulse in Colin Firth’s part but it does provide an insight into the character of Darcy and his longing to … well, conquer his feelings! 😊

This was so evocative of an England lost to time and change. This evokes both joy and sadness in me. When I see an England I no longer recognise this is just a wonderful escape. No other culture has what we have in our history. I cannot imagine for one moment the mass hordes coming over our borders ever being a part of England’s green and pleasant land.
@TudorSmith
@TudorSmith 11 месяцев назад
I guess it’s all part of the rich tapestry. From the darkest ages when this land was conquered: the Saxons, Normans, Jutes, Angles. All have shaped the land. From the industrial revolution to modern day, it has been constantly changing. I personally love how our heritage has been changed but I also still love to visit old castles and stately homes to experience a time long lost to history.

@@TudorSmith yes. Before those tribes came Britain was desolate. They were all the same type of culture and of the same race. They came out of white slavery in Assyria and Babylon making their arduous journey across the Caucasus mountains into Europe. A time when men were real men. They built a civilisation and then an empire. It must have been glorious. But just like South Africa and other white nations, the minorities see what we’ve built and then want to profit off what we’ve achieved. I understand some don’t mind the immigration… but give it a few years. The blacks in South Africa are now filling stadia calling for the death of the white farmer. And they’re carrying it out

What a delightful surprise that your video popped up on my feed. I loved every minute of it. Back in 2012 I think it was, I took a vacation to the UK and Europe from Australia. I was fortunate enough at the time to come across a small group tour that, over 4 days, took us to almost all of the locations you cover in this video. The company I travelled with at the time was called Pride & Prejudice Tours run by a wonderful lady called Helen Porter. She mentioned during our 4 days together that she had originally put this tour together as a birthday present for her daughter and it was meant to be a one off. However, she got such good feedback about it (I'd imagine from friends and the like) that she made an actual public tour out of it. What was so special about it was that she developed a good relationship with the owners at the time of the house that was used as Longborne (not sure of spelling) as the Bennett family home. So we actually got the opportunity to visit the house inside, be treated to a wonderful supper in one of the rooms used in the filming and we were taught some of the dances of the time in the house itself. I was beside myself with joy as was the rest of the group. We also visited and stayed in the B&B you mentioned that was used as Mr & Mrs (Charlotte) Collins' home, Hunsford Parsonage. And to top off what was already the best travel experience I have ever had, I was allocated the bedroom that was used as Lizzie's bedroom in series when she stayed with the Collins'. I was beside myself ... truly the most wonderful travel experience I ever had. We also got to have afternoon tea in the very same sitting room in which Darcy first propses to Lizzie, the one with the brown wallpaper. The only sad thing about the whole experience was knowing that this was to be the last of the P&P tours of its kind that Helen was running. I can't remember the reason she gave, but I believe she moved on the running Downton Abbey tours after that. I'm not sure what she's doing today, but I will forever remember that tour as a highlight of my many travel experiences and I am very glad I got the opportunity to go on it. I also thank you for putting this wonderful video together. It not only brings back wonderful memories of the actual mini-series, but of my tour experiences back in 2012. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I just ran across your video and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. I've watched that movie numerous times and I never get tired of it. It was so fun to hear you refer back to the dialogue of the movie and superimpose the film and pictures over the scene. It really brought a lot of wonderful memories of the film. I'd love to see all those locations myself someday and now I know where they are. I remember how Mr. Collins went on and on about how grand Rosings Park was... well it is of course, but then you see Pemberley and how it pales in comparison. The look on Miss Bennett's face was priceless. This version of the story was always my favorite. Thank you so much for such a informative and fun video. Well done! 🥰

Thanks for making this. BTW, the carriage drive in Derbyshire before they to arrive at Ramshaw Rocks was filmed with Chrome Hill in the background a couple of kilometres NW of Longnor and the walk with Mr Collins into Meryton featured Lacock Bridge on The Wharf going towards Bowden. Did you ever find out where the following scenes were filmed. 1. Lizzie, Charlotte and Maria are told that Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam are calling at the Hunsford Rectory to see them 2. The second proposal and Bingley's ride to Longbourn.
@TudorSmith

Thanks for the hints. I couldn't work out where the “meryton bridge” scene was so if I do a part two and include Sudbury Hall then I could do the bridge and the drive. I’ve no idea where the second proposal takes place but I’d love to find out!

The BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is, to me at least, the definitive version. Possibly because it was done over a much longer period compared to a shorter film version I feel they managed to actually make the book come alive and the characters turn from the well rounded but obviously 2D [because they are in a book rather than real life] ones in the book into real people with real stories, awkward family members and dear friends that we can all relate to. This video hooked me but looking at your channel and discovering you've covered the Beiderbecke trilogy reeled me in [I've loved that series since I first saw it on television back in NZ many many moons ago now].
