The transition from David Burke to Edward Hardwicke was seamless. In the history of changing actors for a part this was unprecedented nor has it been repeated. I cannot chose between them.

What a lovely interview. I love Mr. Hardwicke potrayal of Dr. Watson; his soothing voice contrasted starkly with his fierce protectiveness of Holmes. Devil's Foot is a fave of mine, the way he glared daggers behind Holmes back after his medical advice was ignored is my fave scene . Now i know he was Dr. Watson to Holmes as he was to Mr. Brett. Such a patient and understanding couple. I notice some fans compared his work to Mr. Burke. I didn't. Mr. Hardwicke's Dr. Watson came after 3 years of believing his dear friend died. Then all of a sudden he was alive and even confessed not writing because he feared Watson would unwittingly give him away. No doubt Watson was hurt by that confession and cause the dynamic of their friendship altered slightly.

I think Holmes was not trying to protect himself but Watson. Moriarty’s confederates knew Holmes was alive but not where. Since Watson thought he was dead, they wont be able to squeeze Holme’s whereabouts out of him. The other concern is Watson’s wife Mary would be in jeopardy as well. I think Watson’s change can be better explained by the death of his young wife. In the canon Watson married her in the Sign of the Four, one of the earliest stories. But when Holmes returned she was dead. I think Granada made a mistake not filming Sign of Four with Burke when it was chronologically early in the canon. Had they had him get married like in the story it would make more sense. Instead they waited until Hardwicke was Watson. And by then they decided Watson wont marry her after all. Granada missed a chance for Watson to say his wife passed away while Sherlock was gone.

This was a lovely conversation; I'm amazed that you were able to make the connection and that she was so eager to share her memories. How lucky we are to hear her stories. She sounds like an absolutely wonderful person, and one then assumes that Edward Hardwicke was similarly wonderful.

All respect to David Burke but I much preferred Edward Hardwicke as Watson. I liked him in Colditz as well. His uncle was a legendary RAF pilot called Percy Pickard. Mat he RIP
