Masashi Ebinuma is Japanese judoka who competed in -66 and -73 kg weight categories. He is 3 times World champion and 2 times Olympic bronze medalist. During his prime he was one of the most exciting judokas to watch. He had textbook judo style and very versatile arsenal of throwing techniques lead by Ippon Seoi Nage and Uchi Mata.

So versatile!! Few judokas master so many techniques at the highest level, especially the combination of seoi nage and uchi mata is rare!

Ebinuma was a master of Kataguruma when he was a junior. However, he could no longer use it because of the Leg Grabs ban. On one occasion, when Ebinuma was defeated in a bout, one of the spectators uttered that Ebinuma, who couldn't use his Kataguruma, was nothing more than this caliber of player. Hearing this, Ebinuma rebelled strongly and continued his efforts to learn other techniques. Ebinuma was behind Junpei Morishita, who was a grade below him for a while, but he reversed his position and made it to the 2012 Olympic team.

For those interested: at 7:26, the one he defeats is Ono Shohei. Ebinuma is the last person who was able to defeat him in the same weight category. I think it was in 2014, but I'm not 100% sure

I think this was an All Japan Championships semi-final match. It was widely speculated that Ono threw this fight to avoid a showdown with Hashimoto in the final and risk losing his spot to Hashimoto for the Rio Olympics. At 73kg Ebinuma was not in the running for that spot but Hashimoto and Ono definitely were. A few months later Ono defeated Hashimoto in a searing and controversial 21min contest to secure his spot on the Japan Olympic team. It was a controversial win because Ono kept stepping off the mat and did not get penalized. However Hashimoto was/is very skilled at pushing opponents off and making it look like they walked off. Ono and Ebinuma were very close friends and it is hard not to see how it was not a 'political' match.

I remember watching that fight. It was the team event after Ono won the gold in the individual event. I was thinking as I was watching it that Ono would want to be careful because he looked like he was casually walking after Wandtke looking to score an exhibitionist style Ippon. He certainly got rid of that egotistical mentality in his last fight with the Frenchman. @@BearOZair2001

He is a great player. I love judo but what I hate are the judges that make it all unnatural. In example London Olympics, fight for bronze- Poland Zagrodnik should have won (watch the whole fight for yourselve) but since Japanese player is fighting, he must win. The same case with Riner - let's make him beat the record. I mean c'mon.
