The Punjab and Haryana High Court convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, chief of Dera Sacha Sauda, on Friday in a rape case registered against him in 2002. This triggered violence and arson in the town of Panchkula in Haryana. At least 31 people died and scores were injured. Public and private property worth crores was also destroyed. The scenes echoed the disgraceful vandalism Haryana had witnessed only a year ago during the Jat agitation.
