Primitive Fishing Catch & Cook (episode 42)

Today, modern fishing equipment gives sport fishermen a significant advantage in the pursuit of fish. Despite having many years of experience catching fish with a modern rod and reel, I have struggled to catch fish using primitive methods. I’ve tried a primitive fish trap and I even made hooks out of cactus thorns to try and catch the elusive fish. Through trial and error I am finally learning to improve my odds in the ancient techniques of catching fish. This series will be ongoing to be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

Editing: Final Cut Pro X on MacBook Air

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including RU-vid. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

For those who care to learn...Chad does a great job and I know what I know from both training and a long life of experience. Here is a hint for small stream or creek fishing. The fish are generally smaller than you would like so catching more is what you need to do. Make more traps and place them in tight bends of the waterway. If you can, add rocks in the shape of a funnel stretched out on either side of the trap opening. If you find your waterway is too straight, you can grind up worms or refuse from a mean and wrap it in grass. Leave it loose enough to allow some to slowly escape. Turn your trap around, the hole facing down stream and put the bait ball at the other end. you might do well to wrap the pointed end a bit more with grass to control the water flow. That flow will release the food. Tiny bits will flow downstream and it will attract fish that are passing the basket and fish from below. Once they find the hole, they will eat and hang out. If you put a few branches over the basket, stuck in the mud and held in place by rocks, they will hang even longer so you lose less when you are ready to collect them. If you trap is empty too often, do what Chad is doing, analyze the reasons. You are looking for food to enter a hole about three inches or less in an entire waterway of hiding places! You need to hedge your bet by adding baskets, flow control, enticements and frequent observation. One last thing...set your traps in the morning, collect food and eat then go down stream a good ways and bathe. The fish will turn back if you are a presence they are not used to or they will dart past you. If they go around, put traps in those areas. When you put rocks to funnel, make them cause the water to flow faster. A small catch can be survival but more importantly, it can be a lesson. No matter where you are and what you are in need of, nature has figured out how to keep you from getting it. As Scrooge McDuck says, "Work smarter, not harder!" This has been a PSA from: A Nana.

@@ChadZuberAdventures It started as a child for me. My father died when I was a baby and back then life was pretty hard. My brother and I were toddlers and mom didn't know what to do with a baby girl and boy in diapers. Our neighbor had a dog so at 2 ish I learned of my love for animals. This led to her babysitting. I spent a lot of time alone because my brother, to this day, is very self absorbed. I would build tents and forts or find a place to hide in and make it a home. There were no other kids around and the woman did what grandma types do, let us play unsupervised and run when she heard a crash! LOL. This continued my whole life. To this day I still seek adventure in nature by any means possible. I am now disable though so I live vicariously through people like you or those on tv shows like Naked and Afraid or Alone. You Tube is both good and bad for people wanting to live closer to a natural life. From misinformation to overconfidence, death lurks where more informed people have already gone. I ended up raising myself and at 13 I was riding motorcycles and finding places to camp alone. By 15 I had was living on my own. It would be too dangerous these days. I was very pretty when I was young and there are some stories that would curl your toes...but I always survived. Then one day, just before she passed, my mothers mother told me a secret. She said she was full blood Cherokee. Back then, being Indian wasn't the badge of honor as most people see it today. She was the wife of a southern Baptist Minister and being native in North Carolina meant you were dirty and dumb...well...that is what the white folk thought anyway. It was then, at 17, I found my true self. I have spent my whole life learning and practicing the ways of The People. I am a storyteller, a healer, an artist and historian of artifacts and survival techniques dating as far back as I can go. America has a uniqueness that I admire as it is land where not many feet have tread before the whites arrived. So..that is my story and each thing I suggest I have done in order to survive being poor or homeless. But, I have never felt poor and my home has a blue dome in the day and the moon is my nightlight in the evening. Please....stay the way you are, it is wonderful.

You can make a primative basket (large weave) to hang above a slow part or pool in the river. Put dead animal in basket large enough to attract lots of flies. Once the flies go to town the maggots they produce will fall through the basket weave into the water. It will fatten the fish and make a good fishing hole. Use maggots for bait. Or you can just sautee the maggots :)

I once constructed a primitive toilet as a project while camping. I first found a nice large private tree in a convenient spot. I then dug a hole at the base of the tree. I gathered and shaped 3 sturdy branches with a 'Y' shaped fork in them and drove them into the ground close to the tree in a triangle pattern. Then, in the nook of the forks I laid 2 smooth and shaped branches that could support my weight. This setup let me have the tree to rest my back against and the branches as my seat. I gave it a "test run" and it performed well. Since you already made yourself a primitive sink before, you should come up with your own primitive commode, Chad. 😆

I like your design! But I prefer to squat over a hole. The full squat enables a smooth extraction that often doesn't require even a wipe.

Fish are wary of threats from above. Thats why they like deep pools and rocks they can hide under. They only stay out in the open if they have area around them so they can dash in any direction. I think the issue with your trap is its open to the sky. Try covering the top with leaves so that you create an area they can hide in. Also, try to place it close to those deep pools and boulders. Just a thought...

Next time try to put a trap in this place 13:09 (under right rapid, even without bait), or in another where there is a narrowing of the stream... or make it artificially from stones... such traps work well only in narrow places or back to back to the shore... there where you set the trap, it must be left for a day or more, and without bait it will not work at all ..

As a man that rose up near a small river like this, let me tell three things: turn the basket other way around. Food smell that attract fish go downstream, and fish tend to go upstream. Second: make more traps. More is better than few. If you catch more than you need you can always release. But when catch is not good, it can save the day. Third: try fence-type trap. It can cover more of the stream and easier to make. Or make wings for this basket-trap, it can help too.

If he only has any survival skills he would place the basket opening down look for the fish they always face up the stream even when rest only go down when something spook them.

Your fish trap was fine, but I think you need to put some rocks or stick some sticks into the river to funnel the fish, so the only place they have left to go is into the trap itself. You can also make larger stone weyrs and that will funnel fish into certain spots to make spearing or fishing easier.
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures 2 года назад
Agreed. The spearing thing may be an issue depending of fishing regulations though.

a simple rock wall can be used to funnel the fish into a smaller area. basic old school fishing :P
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 года назад
Yes but you have to move a lot of rock to make that simple rock wall. The river will rise and then you have to add even more rock than you thought at first.

Congratulations on finally getting a fish! I know that had to be super hard and super rewarding, hell I have trouble getting a fish on my line with good fishing rods and tackle. So to get a fish with primitive tools just had to feel so damn good! Congratz again on the accomplishment!

Fortunately for me this place receives zero fishing pressure. I'm probably the only human these fish have encountered in their lives. They are readily willing to bite, even when the line is so visible.

Thanks! Yeah, I want to make a big fishing net. It will take a lot of time to produce the cordage and weave it. I'm talking weeks! But I do want to do it. It will be so easy then.

Brother finally after some time, some salt water fishing , trap fishing, you got a fish. Really happy and excited . Can I suggest ? Do like a dam in V shape , and in the centre you put the trap, so the fish will be funnelled into the trap. Other thing, you could try to do a Bow and Arrow so you can fish and hunt. That would be a great content.

Yes, I know. It's just a matter of time to make those things.

Years ago I watched a movie where a kid made a trap for fish with some plastic tarps and stuff. I can not recall what it was called. Either way a simple funnel trap might also work. Fishing is indeed hard. Though I wonder if you could just make a net. It would indeed take a lot of cordage. In the end it could be a dual use item for carrying things in as well. A simple willow branch could work to keep it open. Also toss nets work as well. Those I do not know how to make. Fishing is indeed hard.
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 2 года назад
I definitely plan to make nets. You're right though, it requires a lot of cordage. I will need a few hundred feet of cordage to make a big enough net. Just like everything else I do, little by little I will get there.
