Hi Anne and Alice, the bulbous piece of treen with holes in the top is called a sander. It was full of sand which was sprinkled on something written in ink to absorb the extra wet ink. They were usually kept on a desk.

Wow wow wow….speechless - that’s the only thing I can say LOL. Just breathtaking to see so many of these early pieces. It’s not hard to fall for prim and when you do….look out! It’s just so amazing, so rich in history and so interesting to see. TFS…it was a delight as usual.

Wow, such a great collection of woodenware!! I have one 6-inch wooden round box with a lid that has the fingers to hold it together! I inherited it from my Mom. It is a treasure!!

Alice - I believe the treen piece with the grooves and the handle is a noodle roller or pasta roller, and the small treen piece with the holes is called a pounce pot and it was used to hold powder that they shook onto ink written on letters and documents to facilitate drying then poured the excess back into the pot. I am also so drawn to wonderful treen pieces …..nothing says prim like early treenware. I really enjoy watching over and over because it’s all so interesting. Thanks Anne for your videos that feed our antique appetites.

A found a basket, don't know where to post this, hopefully you'll find it. While shopping in an "outlet" of area thrift shops, while waiting to check out I found a small 9" egg basket in good shape, that appeared to have been discarded by someone on their way to check out. I added the basket to my cart, paid, put in the car and drove home. After a couple of months I thought I saw some handwriting in between the slats and looking closer, someone had written a name of the maker, a 9 year old, and date made. I followed up and contacted Amish Baskets finding there was a family who made baskets, I asked the person to pass onto the family ,if appropriate, the basket had been found and I treasured the basket, and it was safe. I'm still in awe of the journey of the basket made by a young basketmaker, rescued, and wanted to pass this onto you. Your videos touch softly on my senses. Thank you, Judy, SW Idaho

I love Alice' 's home and all her collections. I have a decent collection of wooden dough bowls and treen ware and have recently started collecting stoneware. I am particularly interested in salt glazed canning jars. Just curious, how long has Alice been collecting? And yes , we would love another Christmas video! Thank you Anne for all the great videos.

I love these videos, thanks to you both! It is interesting that she noted her house style was up to 1830. That date is also used as a definitive date for valuing samplers. I wonder why the 1830’s is often used as a before and after time frame when discussing early American items. I would love to learn.

Interesting! It's also the date that Sturbridge Village has chosen to show the Early American Style.

Alice I believe the treen piece with the little holes you think if for spices is a sander> or pounce pot. Used for sprinkling sand or pounce on wet ink when writing with a quill . Perfect for the antique desk.

Yes! I have been racking my brain for the name of that item. I found one at a flea market for a dollar and looked it up years ago but couldn’t recall.
